What updates?

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade
I sometimes come around and poke a few threads before leaving for a few months again.
How did you do that?

Code
apt update

Code
apt dist-upgrade

Ofc you should be sure the repository is the right one, check /etc/apt/sources.list, inside you should have only the official one:

Code
deb https://http.kali.org/kali kali-rolling main non-free contrib
deb-sources https://http.kali.org/kali kali-rolling main non-free contrib

(Let me know if you get signature key problems)

N.B. Kali linux is not a beginner Linux OS, if is your first approach with linux install Ubuntu or any other debian like wheezy etc

Thank you for your reply. Here is the message I receive " bash: apt-get: command not found " I tried a lot of things I saw on youtube but nothing worked.

Type

Code
sudo su

Use your password

Then try again apt-get

If the problem persists, can you check in /usr/bin folder you should find the binaries for apt.

If you cannot locate them, I suggest you to reinstall kali in your VM

The other option would be downloading the package and installing it manually.
Can you try the following commands and tell me what you get
1) which apt
2) which npm
3) which yarn
4) echo $PATH

Just copy the command , don’t copy 1) just which apt for example.

If at least 1 of the which statement returns a folder path that’s the package manager u have.

$PATH variable shows system path ; this result is to check if something is mis configured
Well at the least paste the command you are imputing in the thread
HI HF
he mistake came from me in the terminal

Good example

# sudo setxkbmap fr
#
#
# sudo nano /etc/apt/sources.lists

here is where there was the error

# sudo setxkbmap fr
#
# sudo nano /etc/apt/sources.lists

I thank you all for your willingness to help me. Being new is not easy but count on you to go further
