I am in need of some advice regarding the career which I should pursue. I hope to get some insight from people who are familiar with these careers or are currently in it as well. I am a computer science major, but interested in becoming a police officer. I have done a lot of research and obviously computer science jobs is where the money is at. I want to do something exciting everyday, I want to be able to be excited to go to work. After coming across many police officers it seems like a majority of them do not enjoy their job. After doing more research online there are a lot of mixed feelings.
I am wondering what does a computer science degree entail for the future? Who here has such a degree and enjoying it at the moment, likewise for police officers or anyone in Law Enforcement. Do you enjoy it? What have you heard from others that are in these careers?
I would appreciate all the insight and advice I can get. Thank you.
I can't really offer much insight into the computer science job positions other than I hear that it's a booming field and that theres a need for people in the field. Although don't be shocked if you're running around a lot to fix issues.
But on the "police officer" side, I interact with a good chunk of the city's officers where I live near and work at, and they're not too shy to share how unhappy they are. Like, it's long shifts and they often speak of how they feel the day drags on.
But that could just be because of the city and the activities that on on an hourly basis.
For police officer I guess it depends on the country, over here on my island is pretty calm sometimes when there isn't tourists around.
If you're police over USA i guess thats harsh and complicated.

Police in the U.S. is just fucked up.
So many arguments and problems going on with them, don’t get involved with that shit.

Yeah, in Europe where I live we see a lot of documentaries about the police in the US.
There's lots of good guys, but there is also a lot of internal bullying and corruption.

That is interesting to here, did all of the police officers you interacted with feel the same way?
- Learn XSS
- Learn basic networking and a tiny ammount of linux
- Google OSCP course tutorial
- Take OSCP course, by copying tutorials
- Go do near harmless XSS attacks on small companies website
- Convince them its dangerous
Profit
(Obviusly its a bit harder then that, but trying to make a joke here, while also outlining a huge problem in the business, still depends on your country of residence)
I'd say - try a business. Think about some weird / interesting ideas which you could possibly develop with your computer science skills. Running a business is exciting and challenging, despite it may not be seen such from perspective.
Of course it depends which type of efforts do you enjoy the most. If those are thinking and planning, I'd give a try.
That is a lot of responsibility and it is a big challenge to keep them not for anyone else but yourself.
Working as a police officer often obliges you to keep responsibilities for other peoples health / safety, which I might assume, is much more stressful.
Just another perspective.

The more older officers, in their 30's and 40's, are like that. Just yesterday one of them pulled their squad car near my work building while I was smoking, grudgingly asking if it were "Six o'clock yet".
But the younger officers who are new to the patrol seem eager and optimistic.

Do not get involved in cyber crime - it's the single worst job you can have, you will get so much hate and bullshit as well as backhanded compliments and pay decreases.
Do independent PI + cyber intrusion and pentesting.
Fix computers and build websites on the side.

I can't tell you what to do with your life, I can't even do it myself.
Well I am honestly not sure. I want to pursue police officer but I want to be wealthy as well. I feel like I cannot become wealthy if I become a police officer realistically.
You should try the Education and Careers forum for more serious replies.
Only use HF to deal.
It’s honestly whatever interests you, and where you will be happy. If you are happy doing a simple job like data entry, or teaching, then do it. If you want to do something much more complex like anything with computer science, or finance, then work your ass off and get there. You can do anything you put your mind to.

Doing things for money may not.
I don't want to tell you to do something because you are your own person.
Please take into consideration your aspirations and before thinking about money think....
What do I want to do that will make me happy?
Money will come with time.
I think being a police officer would be an amazing experience that money cannot buy.
It doesn't mean you can't have a side hustle!
That was some awesome advice, spoke to a few people today and they have given me the same advice. I am probably going to go down the route that will make me happier.
