I have been playing around with Metasploit + Armitage for awhile now scanning large blocks of IPs for systems with vulnerabilities but I have not been able to find anything (I am just practicing, not going to do any damage). I was wondering if this was commonplace or not? I remember doing this years ago and I found plenty but now not a one. I have been locating machines and then doing a hail-mary attack but nothing works.

bruh it's normal, metasploit and other related tools only rely on looking/scanning for known vulns, what you might need is called 0Day exploits. Learn more bout it.

Well done you probably left 1000's of logs if you don't own it don't touch it. Want to practice get a vulnerable VM from VulnHub.com and practice in your own network. And yes sometimes services crash during scans so you probably crashed a few services already.
