Best Response Tweak

Best response feature is an awesome feature, but currently only mentor and staff can mark a post as 'best response.'
Going through the RANF section, mainly focusing on Policy Q tagged threads, and going through various question based threads in some hacking sections, it does not seem like the feature is really being utilized as much as some of us may like.

My proposal is to let OP's (maybe just V3ndor+Ub3r, or Vendor+Ub3r+L33t) mark a response as the best response in their own threads. This lets people know what response helped the OP the most, and it increases the usage of this feature.

There is abuse to look out for. Best response generates 10 bytes and progress towards an award, so people would abuse this. My proposal to combat this:
  1. Allow OP's to only mark 1 best response per day (or 3+ days, how many questions does one really ask?)
  2. Increased details in bytes log. If a non mentor/staff gives out best response, log their name in the bytes log too. That way we can see if BV1 has given Orgy best response 19 times in a row, for example.
  3. (Maybe) Take the bytes directly from non staff/mentors who give out best response, that way we don't have members generating too many new bytes out of thin air.
Similar to how Stack Overflow does things? I like that idea.

I agree, I haven't seen one since launch

Yes, that's closer to what I had in mind, just with restrictions to prevent abuse so people can't cheat their way to the award or generate an excessive amount of bytes with it.
+1 for this, it would be great, i liked the idea that the bytes goes from OP or who mark it as best answer, but then we will have an issue, no one mark it as best answer so they don't lose bytes lol.
I like the idea, I also think it will result in more HQ posts!

Pretty good suggestion. I have to think about execution more. Also timing if we do decide to take on the suggestion.
I support this as long as it isn't in the marketplace.
I like this. Juicy idea. Please, I want to see it live!
Good idea we talked about this on ribbit!

No we didn't.

Try posting constructively.
It would be a nice feature for v3ndors to have. I suppose I should use it more often than I have been.

I have three issues with that:
  1. It's my opinion that if we give v3ndor too many non-marketplace features then it's not really a v3ndor group anymore, just a rebranded 3p1c or r00t.
  2. v3ndors may or may not be active outside of the marketplace. I'm not opposed to v3ndor getting this feature, but I fear usage in certain sections would still be low if it's limited to just them.
  3. I don't think the best response feature should be enabled in the marketplace, which I assume is the most active section for the majority of v3ndors.

Ah, fair points.
I'll personally take a step towards marking more of what I feel are Best Responses.

It seems like honestly though, that posts should be able to be UP or DOWN voted by the readers, and the post with the most up-votes would be labeled as "Best Response" automatically. (min. 3 upvotes)
Then again I can see that being abused easily, and it could cause a mess with the bytes rewarded for having a "best response" post.

Maybe not something exactly like that, but I feel like it'd naturally fix the lack of Best Responses that have been given.

Then again I'm also sleepy and probably just spit-balling some bs.
What about taking what BV1 said here, and implementing a "Likes" system into HF?

At the bottom of every post (just like the other post options) there would be a "thumbs up button" representing the Like button. Any reader/viewer can choose to Like any post he/she comes across. Meanwhile we also still have the Best Response feature which can be further used to show what posts are truly helpful, and not just liked.

I've seen Like systems used on other forums and they work great and really show just how much people can agree on something because a lot of people don't like to post, however they would have no problem clicking "Like".

Just an idea. Not sure if it would take away from responses being posted or not, I don't think it would though.
I actually think it would add more content to threads rather than take any away.
bugga told me I'm a cutie
