Do not use protonmail for your security - Read Here

Just got my protonmail that I barely even use suspended for "Violation of terms & services"

I literally have never sent 1 email and its linked to numerous accounts.

I can not tell if this was targetted or valid but after contacting support they gave me their generic response
discord:
Code

That is really strange and unusual never seen something like this before, anyway thanks for the heads up op
Proton is just a big honeypot set up by the alphabet boys.
I've never heard anything happen like that yet. Still, you being suspended doesn't make them less secure, just scumbags to certain (random?) accounts.

It was a blast being on staff. I stepped down as it's time for me to move on. I wish you all the best and if you were hit by my warnings and/or bans, it was nothing personal.

Peace out!
This never happened to me and I have like 3 accounts, that said, this does scare me since I've also read similar posts about this.
I read the thread 10 times and i still can't figure out how the fuck does them banning your account have anything to do with their security.

I had a lot of protonmail accounts banned, but that was justified as i was pushing to see their abuse limit trigger, and when they banned my account, they didn't ban that account only, they banned multiple other accounts of mine which were registered under the same ip.

However I'm still using protonmail to this day and i will still keep recommending it.

Perhaps he just meant that people usually use it for security but it's in general not a good email.
I remember I tried to use it and it was just super annoying. Maybe the other poster is right that it is a honey pot because it didn't seem set up by people that were good at what they do.

Did you use it before or after their recent UI revamp? you should give it a try again.

EDIT: also OP is saying he had his account banned therefore it's bad for security which literally doesn't make sense.

I think I tried to use it in like 2017 or something. I remember finding it extremely annoying but I forget why.

Oh then you should give it another try. Their new UI is good.

tutanota.

There is no hard evidence(yet) for this claim, but there are some pretty obvious patterns showing that we've already seen with known honeypots.

"We use end-to-end encryption and zero access encryption to secure emails. " This statement is only true regarding communications between 2 protonmail accounts. Try sending encrypted email using protonmail to any other domain. You can't. IMAP/SMTP protocols were not made do be anonymous. You may ask "but you just said protonmail can encrypt communications between 2 protonmail accounts", which is true, but they are using another technology, called PGP, to encrypt your emails' body. PGP can't be cracked by using modern hardware, however it can't encrypt email's meta-data, which include stuff like source and destination email and ip address and subject of the email. Also note that those same emails are stored on their servers.

"No personal information is required to create your secure email account. " Try making an account. If you select free plan, they will force you to provide your email or phone number to verify that you are a real person. If you decide to buy an account, you'll have no way of paying it privately.

"By default, we do not keep any IP logs which can be linked to your anonymous email account. " Internet doesn't work this way, you need to know someone's IP in order to communicate with them. In other words, you need to take their words and trust them(blindly).

Now open tor and connect to proton's onion address. You'll be welcomed by login screen screen. However if you try to login/sign up you'll be redirected to protonmail.com, their clearnet site.

Email was not made to be private. If you are doing something shady or want to hide something, don't use email.
Any chance that the email was hacked and then used to send out spam? Could be a possibility since you said you barely use it and inactive accounts are prime for that.
