Facebook Rebranding, Shifting Focus to "Metaverse"

Article

Quote:Aside from Zuckerberg’s comments, Facebook has been steadily laying the groundwork for a greater focus on the next generation of technology. This past summer it set up a dedicated metaverse team. More recently, it announced that the head of AR and VR, Andrew Bosworth, will be promoted to chief technology officer. And just a couple of days ago Facebook announced plans to hire 10,000 more employees to work on the metaverse in Europe.

The metaverse is “going to be a big focus, and I think that this is just going to be a big part of the next chapter for the way that the internet evolves after the mobile internet,” Zuckerberg told The Verge’s Casey Newton this summer. “And I think it’s going to be the next big chapter for our company too, really doubling down in this area.”

So Facebook is announcing soon that they are rebranding and will shift focus to development of the "metaverse" which Zuckerberg believes is the next major stage of the internet, parallel to the shift that mobile internet was from desktop.

I actually think this is really cool, Facebook with its machine of very smart people and billions of dollars could pull this off.
What do you guys think of this? Will it work could we all have AR Glasses on just like we all have a smart phone in our pocket?
Nowadays? I'm just here for the nostalgia.
I plan to remove smart phones completely from my life, or at least, the internet aspects of them (anything useful youd probably find in earlier versions of this tech) however as it becomes practical to a working and business mindset and less of a rich peoples toy, I might be open to the idea, but not from facebook.

Maybe I’ll have to do a little more reading on this

This is the future the the zuck knows it, hopefully someone who actually has a soul can develop alternatives.

I heard they will change Facebook's name too. The new one would be something around "Horizon" (saw this in local news.)
I heard about this on twitter today, I wonder what name they're going to go with.

This sounds cool but unfortunately for us we all know that Facebook don't do shit unless they can abuse the living hell out of it and its consumers... So we'll see how this works if it does see daylight

Not until they are undistinguishable from normal eye wear.
Most countries stopped Google in their testing face as fear of the consequences...
You have an iPhone it might get robbed, but it's in your hand /pocket /purse.
Glasses visibly expensive high tech. They're on your face.
Would you ducktape a headphone and take the metro thinking: this is absolutely safe.

Once that problem is sorted I'm also sure they'll be a huge revolution.

Excellent points. I wonder if there will be a way to make this technology useful to one person only. That takes away any reason to steal them from others. I could see a world where these glasses are used as a digital identity perhaps with facial recognition or eye recognition or the like. Would be very controversial of course but would solve the problem of identity on the internet.

In 20 to 25 years, people might not get out of their homes anymore.
I have a friend who wrote a book on this subject. He thinks technology will keep us in a golden prison, the gentle and soft cocoon of consumerism and virtual realities.
I mean, this is coming from someone who wanted to make an Instagram for children to "properly introduce them to a world of Social Media" so a "metaverse" idea in comparison to that would be ideal.

Fortune 500's looking for new ways to scathe their money.
I'm not too sure about this. I'll wait for further information.
