So to keep it as short as possible I work for a family I've known for 5+ years easily.
I am mainly there because I like them and want to help them out. I have other options that would pay me a lot better but aside from that I enjoy my work environment.
So anyways, tonight we closed at 9pm. One of the owners decides to seat a party of 11 in the restaurant 5 minutes before close. Okay, cool, yeah it sucks but I understand they want the money.
We have already almost completely closed the kitchen at this point, and am anticipating the party order when we start getting other tickets.
Apparently since we stayed open for the 11, we are available to all the other customers as well. People sitting at the bar are ordering a lot of food, other tables that had finished eating their main meal are now ordering desserts.
This would not have happened after close if she hadn't allowed the party to sit.
At the end of the day I'm cool with them getting more customers, but I got no thank you, no sorry for keeping you over an hour past close. ( I work a 10hr shift,) and nothing of that sort. It was one of those where they say "you're still getting paid."
I need opinions to help me evaluate my choices right now.
Thank you.

This is a topic that needs honesty. I have seen this scenario brought up many times in many many variations. That being said, being in food service, hospitality and the likes will always yield a customer service first attitude. There is a huge reason behind this and it has nothing to do with the boss not caring for your time. A simple 1 star review for something like what happened tonight was avoided by them being sat down. Reviews are crucial in that industry and sometimes that entails smiling with the middle finger behind your back. It's not a fun industry. I worked food service from 12 years old to 18 years old so I definitely can relate.
If this sounds crazy to you, this is definitely not the job for you and that's okay!

Irregardless of what happened, a simple thank you would have changed everything. I've done food service 10+ years.

You are 100% correct. A solid leader would acknowledge someone going above and beyond. If this continues to be a hard point for you I would bring it up in the future. Whatever you do keep this relationship intact.

I agree. It's not in their nature though. They just figure I'm still on the clock and still getting paid so it's okay. Even though I've been there 10 hours and am looking forward to closing and getting out
Honestly, its not about them, its about what you accept, and the fact you stayed shows you accepted it. No one pointed a gun to your head. For me, If I didn't want to accept it, I simply would have just say, in advance ,something like, hey, just so you know, I have to leave at the scheduled(closing time). (if something was planned you can mention you made plans or not, who cares)
And I would leave at such time.

I don't think you're an asshole, but being offended here is super unproductive. All it will do is make you more upset. The way I see it - there's three things you can do here:
1) Just let it go. Perhaps you can think about any extra tips or income you got and use that to let it go? If it's a one-time thing or you expect it to be a rare occurrence, this might be the thing that is best for everyone - including your mental health.
2) Talk to your boss about it. You can talk to your boss about the fact that you didn't expect them to seat a huge table so close to closing and that you would have liked to adhere to the scheduled time. This will go differently depending on your boss' personality. I do not recommend this approach since they will likely get defensive and its never good to argue with your boss.
3) Make a plan for when it happens again. When it happens again - are you willing to just stick with it and let it go? Or is your plan to tell your boss that you need to leave at the scheduled time? Knowing what you're going to do ahead of time will help you feel better about the situation and actually stick to what will make you happy in the future.
If it were me, I'd let it go this time but make a plan for the future. It sounds like you will stick to the scheduled time in the future since the boss has shown you that they won't show any extra appreciation for staying extra hours.

No you’re not an asshole man. I’m currently in the process of getting out of the streets and away from all of these employers, and make a career for my future. I currently have a girlfriend who’s been treating me right. I still want to become independent. U deserve the world man, don’t settle. I know you are having second thoughts don’t give up. Have a great and blessed day man!

This reminds me of a story of how a certain boss I know (its common in my industry) keeps staff a bit longer than their contracted hours. I'm not part of this as I'm in a different/higher up role but I know it's just a sort of accepted thing.
They had this new 16 year old apprentice dude and on his first week it was happening and his mum rang the boss directly to stay she's a lawyer and what he's doing isn't legal, straight up that kid was the only one who would leave by his end hours on the dot.
Everyone still puts up with it. No idea why, scared to lose their job?
Anyway, it softened the blow in comparison when I figured at least you still got paid for it, the above don't get paid for those extra 10-15 mins daily, which adds up to hours and hours in the long run. RIP

I wont work in the restaurant business because I think they take advantage of the employees especially when it comes to parties. The party normally has one bill and that means one tip which is unlikely that it's even split with all the employees. I don't think you're an asshole matter of fact I think you should start looking for a better path than working with food for people that don't appreciate your time. With that being said don't just quit your job seriously look, find and get a job offering before you leave and trust me you'd be much happier. Don't take the abuse from restaurants because they get and want the profits... what does them making money do for your wallet? Absolutely, nothing so no if anything you have a right to feel this way and I hope that you know you aren't a bad guy for feeling abused by your employer.
With it being a family business they could of been pushing the numbers pretty close. Sometimes you need anything you can get just to make it to the next day of being in business and paying bills.
It's hard because if this is the situation the owner is probably so emotionally clouded and stressed getting to that number that you can forget to thank your employees who get you there.
Look at it in the long term point of view. You would know this business the best, not us. Sure shitty things will happen every once in a while that's just the way it goes.
Your not an asshole for feeling offended, 100% normal to any employee I'm sure. There's just a different mindset of being an owner and employee and it's not often that the two mindsets can see what each other are thinking and sympathize with them.
Can easily be complicated thinking about it with so many different possible variables. Best solution? Probably talking to your boss or whoever made the decision about it and understanding their thought process.
Everyone wants to be appreciated for their efforts.. A simple thank you probably would have meant a lot. No you weren't an asshole for feeling offended..
