[Story] I (literally) almost died a few months ago

So I used to be a really heavy drinker, usually going through about a quarter gallon of cheap vodka every night. This went on for about a year and I tried to quit in late March. Only about 3 days after quitting I got a really bad pain like someone was punching my solarplexus over and over and so I go to the hospital and get released with pain meds.

The pain meds didn't work so I go back to the hospital and that's the last thing I remember until about mid May. It turns out I'd been in the ICU for weeks, and apparently pretty early into my sedation, the medical staff had told my family I wouldn't make it through the night so they had come to say their goodbyes. I was diagnosed with severe acute necrotizing pancreatitis (presumably from all the alcohol).

The recovery was the hardest part. After spending 2 months in ICU, I lost all of my muscle stength and could barely sit up let alone stand on my own. I had literal rubber tubes stuck into me to drain out the digestive fluid that had been leaked all over my abdomen. I went septic in the ICU (really bad infection), and then my kidneys stopped working. I was on dialysis up until just a few weeks ago.

I feel like I was the least traumatized by all this, as I was basically asleep with sedation meds while my family was well aware of the dire situation.

I still crave alcohol daily, but have managed to steer clear of consuming any, instead opting for some good ol' weed.

If you take away anything from this, please don't abuse alcohol. I'm lucky to even be here now and I wouldn't wish that kind of suffering on ANYONE.
Thank you for sharing this personal story with us and giving a lesson to any regular drinker.

Generally, all conditions related to the pancreas are potentially lethal, and very few are treatable only.
For example, Pancreatic Cancer has only a few % (6-7%) 5-year survival chance.
It is a kind of organ that rarely causes symptoms until it is too late, similar to the liver, another silent organ.

I really feel happy for you despite not knowing you. Cherish your second life.
Sounds like a lot to go through, alcohol is no joke. Hope you recover from the toll it put on your body.

I've been through many drugs (cocaine, molly, LSD, ecstasy, ... ) and for many years, but alcohol is definitely the hardest to quite. I'm drinking less than before but it's not that easy to stop, however your post let me know that complications could happen to anyone and there are rarely a second chance. Your post wasn't useless, be sure that's in my mind for now and the next time I'll want to drink I'll think about it.

Thanks for your share buddy, I wish you the best
Thankfully you are still alive with us and able to share your thoughts with us.
dam im glad your okay thats pretty scary though
I've been drinking past 25 years. never really thought of stopping. because I drink in moderation.
also, always remember this. never stop any such habit. always go through tapering.

there's instruction for almost every type of addiction tapering off on the internet itself.

but well, good luck with your new life. maybe help others IRL not just post here for your mental satisfaction.

I've been warning my best friend about this for years. He refuses to get help. He doesn't want to quit. He thinks there's nothing wrong with it. I'm glad you're doing better.

That's kinda what I was doing too. It's easy to think that it's fine if you're functional (you still go to work, and do the things you need to) like Iw was, but your pancreas doesn't care if you make it to work or not.

If you are a regular drinker, just put your efforts into giving blood tests once per year, including your liver enzymes.

It should give an insight into your current health.

That's the truth though. Be conscious of ones choices.
