someone just paid a transaction fee of 83 BTC (3.1 million USD)

someone just paid an 83 BTC (3.1 million USD) fee on a 155 BTC transaction.

https://www.blockchain.com/explorer/tran...1f5448f9aa

the sender sent 155 BTC, the receiver got 55.7 BTC.

lucky day for the blocks miner, bad day for whoever made the mistake.

Holy fucking shit!

And here i was early today moaning to myself about a £10 transaction fee on a £40 payment...

They're really not having a good day.

Kind regards,

Just read about this... mind blowing. How does something like that even happen?! Surely everyone checks the fees before sending and would notice something like this?

Must be funds someone had to move out, I don't see how this would be possbile in any other situation

Its happened before, multiple times unfortunately.

Antpool mined the block, lucky them.

aren't they going to return the funds? it seem to have happened before and the miner who got it returned them.
Can someone fill me in on what you mean ‘the miner got them’ how? And how much did they get?

The crypto bloclchains are often powered by “miners” who keep the blockchain full proof at all times.

Using complex cryptography they work using tonnes of hardware resources verifying transactions all day long.

Often times the blockchain can get congested and those who set the miner fee the highest will take priority.

In this case, the person made a mistake by setting the miner fee incredibly high. So all miners naturally started getting onto that transaction until it was finally verified and approved to be stored in the blockchain.

So that’s what happened. A huge chunk when to the computer verifying the transaction and the receiver got a partial amount.

I actually was finessed $35 a few days ago for a $100 gift card lol. I didn’t check the fees, I don’t trust trust wallet anymore
Imagine if a solo miner got it and got 83 BTC! Lmao.. Nope, no solo miners can get a block. BTC is centralized by the easiest attack. Physical.. and easiest to trace. Excessive power.

I'm noob to this, but does that actually fucking mean that some miner who probably expected a payout of $40-50 for example got $3 million? Did one random miner got rich or it got redistributed to more than one person?

Block rewards are 6.25 (plus whatever transaction fees are), so instead of getting 6.25BTC (approx. $230k), he got 6.25+83+other transaction fees instead.

i was thinking about this. im not sure if i want it to be a mistake by a corporate employee or by a private btc holder. the corporate employee at least probably wouldnt be liable to pay the fee and the private btc holder should have known better.

fat finger typo or misconfigured bot is my only explanation tbh.

afaik eth had an update at some point and nowadays automatically returns such overpayments. but with btc it would be up to the miner, which seems to be a pool, to return them voluntarily.

im not an expert but i dont think single miners play a big part in btc mining anymore. this transaction was mined by a mining pool.

This is what I was thinking as well.
