How do you guys find projects?

Hey, I was just wondering how to programmers keep getting new ideas to work on. Most thing I have seen is that people go on github and find something that is similar to what they want to work on and tinker it to make it their own. My other question is how to efficiently do search on github.

If someone know French, feel free to speak to me in French.
I think what you've described is common for open-soure projects or projects which already have established communities. It's often easier to improve or optimise an existing project than it is to build something completely new.

Personally, I just look at building things which are associated with practical problems that I experience and expect others do too.

For me, it’s about identifying value and selling it.

There’s an endless amount of things to create, so don’t overwhelm yourself. It’s best to just get started.

I just make things that intrest me, either for gain or not. I believe everything I code will have value one way or the other. Most recent example was that I was writing a KV database with a merkletree in Rust, then when talking about it in some community got talking to someone and now we are founding an AI company together currently doing about 24k MRR, otherwise just like the aforementioned comments, look for value, look for problems you have because others will.

Truly when it comes down to it almost anything will sell aslong as you market it to the right group of people
I easily resonate with both posts above, identifying a need, solve it using programming.

For me though, my direction and goal is education and competency in the language before attempting to product any real world valuable content.

For example, I learned about Selenium and BeautifulSoup4 for web scraping and automation by making an account checker for over 25 websites.

I am now making an encrypted chatroom to better understand and familiarize myself with basic networking protocols and encryption processes. No clue what I'm gonna do with it beyond put it in a flash drive I never open again, but the knowledge remains.

Bonjour! I do not know French though.
Usually I just type in Google "_thing I want_ github open source" or similar. You can also try searching for keywords "white label" or similar.

True, it is very hard to start your own. Even if it's useful & new, there's a lot of work involved in making a project popular with people who will actually contribute. Plus it's nice to jump into someone else's because it's less stressful and you feel like you can walk away if you need to.

This is so true, it really does not matter what you start with if the alternative is to not start at all. Choice overload!

Exactly, everything can come back around. Sometimes the most trivial interactions lead to the biggest opportunities, and you never know what you do that will spark someone else's interest.

Absolutely, value is driven by solving needs, or improving on other solutions. Selenium & soup are really fun to play with and you can do a lot with it. It really takes off when you get into big data because when you are doing anything around 1 - 100 pages/results, the scrapers are faster but not by much if it takes you a bit to write the scripts. When you get into the 100-1000+ items, writing the scraper is almost always faster than doing it manually.
I usually get an idea when I have something I want to either automate or solve, ie; a recurring problem
As a rather noob to coding, I have been writing scripts to automate many things that I do often in pentesting (scanning and enumeration etc..). I also find things on Github that others have written/shared and augment them with my own code to meet the needs I have.

I ussualy use chatgpt for ideas. Because it will give me good ideas and code done so I can check my self and get some help
Google + Github projects.
I think it depends on the types of projects you want to work on. If you want to collaborate then finding something on GitHub is best.

I personally am using a grocery app with my wife and the quality of all of the apps we’ve tried are either terrible or cluttered with ads now. So I’m creating a grocery app that we can use with some functionality that I haven’t seen before but would love to have.

Work also inspires me. I have some ideas for new companies that automate tasks that my company and many others have to deal with so I’m working on those ideas as well. These are both passion and money driven projects for me, I hope to either sell the product outright or start my own company with one of these projects.

A lot of people play video games, creating your own or working on a mod is a great project and is actually how I started on my journey to coding.

Smart home tech projects can be really fun too. Automating different things, interfacing with like your own Amazon Alexa plugin. I haven’t gotten into doing custom work with a smart home device like Amazon Alexa but I have setup my own automated watering system and run all the piping for my deck and garden.

you'd like to search google and find github with keyward and filter.
I got a job for someone. Hit me up!
