DeepSeek AI's Data Practices Raise U.S. National Security Alarms

I knew that was bound to happen:

Quote:As Chinese AI application DeepSeek attracts hordes of American users, Trump administration officials, lawmakers and cybersecurity experts are expressing concern that the technology could pose a threat to U.S. national security.

DeepSeek's introduction in the U.S. on Monday saw it quickly become the most downloaded free application in the country on Apple's app store. The rollout also rocked Wall Street as investors struggled to compute the sudden appearance of a low-cost, open-source generative AI tool able to compete with leading artificial intelligence apps such as OpenAI's ChatGPT.

Shares of Nvidia, the U.S. manufacturer of advanced chips engineered for AI development, plummeted 17%, chopping roughly $600 billion off its market value — a record single-day drop for a U.S. stock.

That explosive debut was branded a "wake-up call" by President Trump on Monday. Addressing reporters on Tuesday, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said the National Security Council (NSC) would examine the potential national security implications around DeepSeek's launch, noting that the administration would seek to "ensure American AI dominance."

What is DeepSeek, and why is it causing Nvidia and other stocks to slump?
Some lawmakers also weighed in with concerns about the application's access to U.S. users.

"The U.S. cannot allow Chinese Communist Party models such as DeepSeek to risk our national security and leverage our technology to advance their AI ambitions," Rep. John Moolenaar, a Michigan Republican who chairs the bipartisan House Select Committee on the Chinese Communist Party, said Tuesday in a statement shared on social media. "We must work to swiftly place stronger export controls on technologies critical to DeepSeek's AI infrastructure."

The spotlight on DeepSeek comes amid rising tensions over trade, technology and other issues between the two superpowers. The U.S. has already imposed significant export controls on China in an effort to rein in Beijing's production of semiconductors used in developing advanced AI, with the most recent curbs coming in December.

"At the President's direction, the NSC and others in the U.S. government work in many ways to address concerns involving AI, China and data security," agency spokesperson Brian Hughes told CBS News in an email. "As the President has underscored, U.S. policy is to ensure that the United States leads the world in AI."

The emergence of DeepSeek AI has prompted significant national security concerns among U.S. officials, leading to immediate actions and potential future measures:

Quote:Immediate Actions:
U.S. Navy Ban: The U.S. Navy has prohibited its personnel from using the DeepSeek AI application, citing potential security and ethical issues.

Quote:Potential Future Measures:
White House Review: The White House is assessing the national security implications of DeepSeek AI, considering possible actions to mitigate associated risks.

Quote:Regulatory Actions: Given the parallels to previous concerns with apps like TikTok, U.S. regulators may contemplate restrictions or bans on DeepSeek AI to safeguard national security.

Quote:Industry Safeguards: The situation underscores the necessity for robust industry safeguards and regulatory frameworks to address potential harms associated with foreign-developed AI applications.

As the U.S. government continues its evaluation, further actions may be implemented to address the challenges posed by DeepSeek AI.

What are your thoughts on all this news? I saw that DeepSeek is a new open-source project, and if there’s anything concerning about it, I’m sure someone will bring it up.

Its fucking ridiculous. Anything Chinese or foreign made is a national security risk. They take this shit way too far and ruin anything good that is made outside the United States. Fucking stupid politicians.
typical ey, the moment they aren't the only ones in control shit goes side ways.

To be fair a lot of shit from China is a security risk, I deal with real Chinese people regularly for importing and even on their own Domestic Amazon (1688) I get nickle and dime scammed constantly, if I don't bring up that something is missing I will not be getting a refund, Chinese people are scamming the Chinese, god knows how they would treat the rest of the globe lol.

But targeting every thing that they make and citing national security every single time is going way overboard. Just because better shit came out of China doesn't mean its a national security risk.
I thought Trump liked the competition. He said that cheap is good and that it was a good wake up call for us.

On a serious note. The open source models can be run by anyone or tweaked with locally or via cloud. Every variable of it which the person running it can control. No national data security risk there. As far as I can see.

That being said the mobile and web app DeepSeek runs for free for everyone does run on their servers. So Americans is being used by China to improve their AI advancements. Though this is nothing new as we have seen the TikTok journey.
Wow, the impact of DeepSeek AI on national security and the stock market is definitely making waves. It'll be interesting to see how the U.S. government responds to these concerns. Hopefully, they can find a balance between innovation and security.
