New Research Shows Classic Selfish Mining Is Outdated
A new selfish mining attack strategy leveraging disjoint private forks significantly outperforms traditional single-tree attacks. Experimental results using the Storm model checker show that even simple configurations yield higher expected relative revenue (ERRev) compared to honest mining or classic selfish mining. The attack remains effective across all values of switching probability (𝛾) and resource advantage (𝑝), highlighting critical vulnerabilities in efficient proof system blockchains and underscoring the need for more robust fork-choice and network control mechanisms.
