Proof-of-age ID leaked in Discord data breach

Video game chat platform Discord has suffered a data breach, informing users that their personal information – including identity documents of those required to prove their age – were compromised.

The company stated last week that an unauthorised party had compromised one of Discord’s third-party customer service providers, leading to the access of “a limited number of users” who had been in contact with the customer service or trust and safety teams.

The data compromised may have included usernames, email, billing information, the last four digits of credit card numbers, IP addresses and messages with customer support.

Discord said the alleged attacker “also gained access to a small number of government ID images (eg driving licence, passport) from users who had appealed an age determination.

Affected users were in the process of being notified as of last week.

“If your ID may have been accessed, that will be specified in the email you receive,” Discord said.

The support system was targeted to access user data with a view to extort a financial ransom from Discord, the company stated.

Discord said it revoked the third-party provider’s access to its ticketing system and launched an internal investigation, including engaging with law enforcement.

The attack appears to have occurred on 20 September, according to a user who received a notification.

Discord has said it has over 200m active monthly users.

Discord began using facial age assurance to check the age for users in the UK and Australia earlier this year. The company said facial images and ID images “are deleted directly after” ages are confirmed, but Discord’s website noted that if verification fails, users can contact the trust and safety team for a manual review.

Under the under 16s social media ban to come into effect on 10 December, the Australian government has outlined that it expects platforms such as Discord – which is one of the platforms that has been asked to assess if it is required to comply – should have multiple options for assessing a user’s age, and a way for them to quickly appeal an adverse decision.

Platforms can ask for ID documents as part of the age assurance scheme, but it cannot be the sole method of age assurance offered by the platforms under the policy.

The Australian privacy commissioner confirmed it had been notified about the breach by Discord.

Discord was approached for comment.

It's crazy — knowing the number of trolls hanging around on that platform who will hurry to go look for information, it's been many years since I stopped using my real identity for services like that. France's latest great idea was to require ID/passport verification to access adult sites; you really have to be not very smart to agree to that.

Thanks for the share man, interesting article.
Let me guess, they promised to delete IDs after verification and stored it anyway?
I mean, we reached a point where you shouldn't trust any online service with your private information.
If you decide to do so, it is indeed your own responsibility. You have to be legally blind if you do not realize data breaches happen all the time.

I bet Discord promised to delete IDs just as Drizzled stated.

100% ...

This happens time and time again.

Putting your data into any system is a risk, regardless
Indeed I hate having to do ID verification due to issues like this.

Even if there were 0 issues, I don't think it's right for the internet to require proof of age.
I get why... to keep a % of the world safe.

The internet should be like the wild west in the early days... Some die, some thrive, but almost everyone's mostly free.

Indeed.

I know it's nearly impossible to avoid it nowadays.
But I'm sure uploading your ID to Discord wasn't neccersary after all.

Also, it's beyond my comprehension why we still require physical IDs in 2025.
We live in such a modern world, there are definitely better ways to verify.

If we're going to do ID verification then I'd like to see a digital ID that is anonymous, but verified.
It would have to be centralized by governments, but it's a happy medium...

we already get social security numbers, or other ID numbers, so that wouldn't change...
Our govs know who we are, so that doens't change..

The gov could create a system that lets private companies verify people w/o receiving any of their data
> or giving users a way to opt in or out for what they share, while still verifying that "this person is a citizen and is 18+" ANONYMOUSLY.

Try and lookup Denmark’s national digital identification system
Very interesting system.

Yeah, this is similar to what I am saying I think..

There needs to be a way to verify without sharing personal info, a way to opt-in to sharing personal info, and a way to recover an anonymous ID without revealing ID to a third party.... A government DB makes sense for these reasons, and we would just need to modify our existing systems to support it.

There could even be temp keys so the ID is not a be-all end-all if stolen (like an SSN can be).
For example... go to gov site/app, verify, get temporary access token, share with third party, the third party connects to gov system, and done!
Discord was known for its bugs back when it started. It seemed like the company had gotten more professional and tighter but they need to be sure of their systems now.

So many kids these days use discord.
Discord doesn’t ask everyone for their ID, right? They only ask people who get flagged? Or has thing changed recently

Yea. They don't ask for IDs from everyone.

But this was a data breach from a third party. Basically Discord was outsourcing a part of security support.

Oh man, that’s wild. I guess you need to outsource somethings…
