Likely both :-P He's out of prison or someone else running it now?
Damn, I'm wondering who leaked the source code.

I'm also worried for Smelly, people making billions will probably not let this go like that ... They're not hackers, they're more criminals.
I don't understand how a ransomware dev crew can make billions and not get their wallets locked instead.

How can you lock a de centralized wallet? when you hold the keys?

He never went to prison.
Security researcher - Information gatherer - Web developer-
Found vulnerabilities in multiple large international companies. Built and sold webshops exceeding $10,000 per project.
Ethical hacker - my moral compass is known to be pragmatic and can be bent for the right price. DM for business.
VXUnderground just updated their twitter to say that they don't think it's the real Lockbit 5 but instead an earlier build or a modified Babuk ransomware builder. If they can verify it's not the real builder, they'll release it for everyone.

Interested to see how this all plays out!

Really? According to the FBI / Interpol he/a developer was arrested, extradited to the US and charged with 4 years prison (surprisingly low, odd). Althout I suppose he could have just been a big player in their campaigns.

Quote:According to the superseding complaint, documents filed in this and related cases, and statements made in court, Panev acted as a developer of the LockBit ransomware group from its inception in or around 2019 through at least February 2024. During that time, Panev and his LockBit coconspirators grew LockBit into what was, at times, the most active and destructive ransomware group in the world. The LockBit group attacked more than 2,500 victims in at least 120 countries around the world, including 1,800 in the United States. Their victims ranged from individuals and small businesses to multinational corporations, including hospitals, schools, nonprofit organizations, critical infrastructure, and government and law-enforcement agencies. LockBit’s members extracted at least $500 million in ransom payments from their victims and caused billions of dollars in other losses, including lost revenue and costs from incident response and recovery.

No I mean how FBI and other authorities are taking and seizing down the wallets.

If authorities raid a person and seize their wallet, data, or devices, they may confiscate the physical items. However, because cryptocurrency records reside on a decentralized ledger, investigators can only monitor on-chain transactions and trace links to exchange accounts, they cannot move the funds without the private keys.

This reminds me something. Can someone just remember a private key. Or form of it in BIP39 or any other form?

Will that be a good idea to not have private key anywhere in physical world but rather remembering it in your head?

Well I suppose you can argue what if the person loses memory or dies. I'm just thinking what's the best way to hide such a thing and keep it all secure.

I think a very good idea would be to write down the private key on paper, put the paper in a waterproof box and just bury the whole thing in the ground. Like pirates did with treasure chests in the old days.

Imma do this. And when the time comes my kids and grandkids will have a good old pirate hunt.

Seems like a good idea but risky.

You get forced to give it up by certain federal entities or, as many cyber criminals are, just fucking retarded and keep it on you at your time of arrest.

You gotta realize these people are paranoid 24/7, that life is very shitty, and they make sloppy mistakes.
