A friend asked me to help with what he described as a really minor issue on his laptop. Said it was just running slow and freezing sometimes. I agreed, expecting the usual cleanup stuff.
While looking around, I noticed a couple things that didn’t add up. Background processes running with generic names, folders that looked intentionally boring, and logs that were way more active than you’d expect for how he uses the machine. Nothing obviously malicious, just… oddly organized.
When I asked him about it, he brushed it off and said “yeah that’s normal, just leave it.” The tone shift was instant. I finished the basics, handed it back, and didn’t push it.
Later that night he messaged me thanking me and casually added “good thing you didn’t dig too much.” Probably a joke, but it didn’t really feel like one. Am I just overthinking this or would that stick with you too?
