“In the worst cases, [the deepfakes] potentially damage a release campaign or tarnish the reputation of an artist”
Sony Music has reportedly taken down 135,000 AI-generated “deepfake” tracks from streaming services.
According to the BBC, the “deepfakes” were created using generative AI, with Beyoncé, Queen and Harry Styles among the targeted artists, some of the major label’s biggest signings.
Sony reported its findings on Wednesday, 18th March, at the launch of the music industry’s Global Music Report by the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI).
“In the worst cases, [the deepfakes] potentially damage a release campaign or tarnish the reputation of an artist,” said Dennis Kooker, president of Sony’s global digital business.
“The problem with deepfakes is that they are a demand-driven event. They are taking advantage of the fact that an artist is out there promoting their music. That is when deepfakes are at their worst – building off and benefiting from the demand the artist has created [and] ultimately detracting from what the artist is trying to accomplish,” he continued.
