End of Week Update - May 17, 2026

Weekly World Update — Week Ending May 15, 2026
Hey all, doing my Friday roundup. This was a heavy week — Beijing summit, Russia hitting a new ceiling on Ukraine, the Fed got a new chair, and markets ripped to records anyway. Here's what actually mattered:

🇨🇳 Trump–Xi Summit Wraps in Beijing
Trump left Beijing this morning after two days with Xi. The framing both sides agreed on was a "constructive relationship of strategic stability." What that actually produced:

200-jet Boeing order from China
U.S. beef imports restored
Joint pledge to keep the Strait of Hormuz open
Cooperation on fentanyl precursors
Nvidia H200 chip sales cleared for ~10 Chinese firms (Alibaba, Tencent, ByteDance, etc., capped at 75K units each)
What did not happen: no rare earth deal, no AI investment framework, no real tariff cuts beyond Bessent saying they'd "explore" it.

The Taiwan thing is the story though. Xi called Taiwan "the most important issue in U.S.–China relations" and warned mishandling could push things to "clashes and even conflicts" — he literally invoked the Thucydides Trap. The U.S. readout didn't mention Taiwan at all. Rubio later said U.S. policy hasn't changed. Trump on Air Force One: "We'll be fine."

Markets seem to be reading this as managed-trade theater. The real question is whether Xi can pressure Iran on Hormuz — Trump apparently asked him to, and Xi reportedly said China won't arm Iran. We'll see.

🇺🇦 Russia Launches Largest Two-Day Aerial Assault Since the Invasion
While Trump was in Beijing, Russia threw 1,560+ Shahed-pattern drones and 56 missiles (including Kinzhals) at Ukraine over Wednesday and Thursday. Mostly Kyiv but also Kharkiv, Odesa, Kherson, Sumy.

A nine-story apartment building in Kyiv's Darnytsia district collapsed entirely — 24 confirmed dead, all 18 apartments destroyed. Klitschko declared a day of mourning. Ukrainian air defense claimed 93% interception, but the absolute numbers are what matter — Russia is now producing at a tempo that can saturate Western air defenses.

This came hours into a Russia-declared "ceasefire" for May 9–11 that nobody really observed. The EU is finalizing a €6 billion drone-support package for Ukraine in response. Expect more Patriot interceptor requests soon.

🛢️ Iran Ceasefire on "Massive Life Support" — Day 77 of the War
Trump's own words on the April 8 ceasefire. He rejected Iran's 14-point counterproposal (they wanted U.S. recognition of Iranian sovereignty over Hormuz, frozen assets released, blockade lifted, in exchange for limited nuclear concessions). Iran's negotiator told Washington to "accept or face failure."

The dual blockade continues: U.S. Navy interdicting Iranian shipping under the April 13 order, Iran controlling foreign-vessel passage through Hormuz. IEA says ~4 million bpd of crude flows have been lost since March.

Direct cost of the war so far per the acting Pentagon Comptroller: $25 billion. Hegseth told Senate Appropriations they have "plans to escalate" and "plans to retrograde."

Brent at $106.89. Gas at $4.534/gal national average. This is the baseline now, not a spike.

💰 Markets Hit Records Anyway
S&P 500 crossed 7,500 for the first time ever (closed 7,501)
Dow back above 50,000 (first time since February when the Iran war started)
Nasdaq at 26,635
Cisco +13.4% on guidance raise, Nvidia +4.4% on the H200 China news
Bitcoin around $80,800
Breadth was narrow though — Boeing actually fell 4.7% despite the China order (margin concerns), and 3M and Amazon dropped. This is an AI-infrastructure rally, not a broad one.

Retail sales +0.5% in April (a miss), jobless claims ticked up to 211K.

🏦 Kevin Warsh Confirmed as 17th Fed Chair (54–45)
Replaces Powell, who stays on as Governor and keeps his FOMC vote — first time that's happened in nearly 80 years. Warsh has said there's room to cut rates but pledged independence.

The problem he inherits: April CPI +0.6% m/m, trailing 12-month at 3.8% (highest in nearly 3 years), and PPI ran +6% YoY — biggest jump since 2022. The 30-year Treasury yield broke 5% on the PPI print.

CME FedWatch: 97% probability of no change at the June meeting. If Warsh tries to call the energy-driven inflation "transitory," the long end of the curve is going to punish him.

🇬🇧 UK Government Crisis Deepens
Health Secretary Wes Streeting resigned, telling Starmer he'd "lost confidence" in his leadership. He hasn't formally launched a challenge, but 92 Labour MPs have now publicly called for Starmer to set a departure date — the leadership-challenge threshold is 81.

Other dominoes: a Labour MP resigned his Makerfield seat to clear a path for Andy Burnham back to Parliament. Angela Rayner got cleared on tax issues, opening her own potential candidacy.

Watch the Whitsun recess on May 23 — if Starmer survives to it, the immediate threat fades. If not, contest in early summer.

⚖️ SCOTUS Preserves Mail Access to Mifepristone
Supreme Court declined to reimpose the pre-2021 in-person clinician requirement. Mail and telemedicine dispensation stays. The drug is used in roughly two-thirds of U.S. abortions, and about 50% of that volume goes through mail/telehealth.

Status quo holds for now. Next battles move to interstate-shipment and provider-shield-law fights at the state level.

🇱🇧 Lebanon–Israel Talks (Third Round) Underway in DC
Truce extended from April 17 expires within days. Israel wants full Hezbollah disarmament; Lebanon wants ceasefire and Israeli withdrawal first, with the Hezbollah question handled politically in Beirut afterward. Hezbollah's leadership publicly rejects the format entirely.

Most likely outcome: another truce extension, with a real security armistice possible within two weeks. Would be the most significant Lebanon–Israel arrangement since the failed 1983 May 17 Agreement if it sticks.

🇧🇴 Bolivia Coming Apart
Mining cooperatives, peasant unions, and the COB clashed with police at the presidential palace in La Paz on Thursday — they were throwing dynamite. President Paz (elected in October on a reform platform) met with miners and convened emergency talks.

Behind it: fuel and dollar shortages, gas exports collapsed, the fuel subsidy got repealed. 70+ road blockades nationwide, shortages of food, medical oxygen, fuel. Evo Morales is amplifying the protests from his current legal limbo.

Bolivia holds the world's largest unrefined lithium reserves, so this matters beyond the immediate crisis.

What I'm Watching Next Week
Iran's formal response to Trump rejecting the 14-point proposal (expected in 24–48 hours)
Whether China actually leans on Tehran to reopen Hormuz — the untested deliverable from Beijing
Ukraine retaliatory strike inside Russia (very likely in the next 24–72 hours)
Lebanon–Israel talks conclusion Friday
UK leadership challenge threshold — could be crossed before May 23 recess
The June 16–17 FOMC meeting is now basically a referendum on whether the energy shock is transitory
That's the week. Let me know what you think, and what I should dig into more next time.
Space echoes like an immense tomb, yet the stars still burn. Why does the sun take so long to die?
Well, I’ll be coming to you for all my worldly updates from now on lol thank you

Honestly, I don’t know why Trump went to China. You hate them, and they hate you, and the visit seems completely pointless.
