A 7-year-old girl was fatally stabbed by a stranger in Chicago. The child was walking on South Cottage Grove Avenue, near 86th Street in the city’s East Chatham neighbourhood, when a woman she did not know approached her. The woman stabbed the little girl in the back multiple times with a sharp object.
She was transported to Comer Children’s Hospital where she was later pronounced dead, police said.
The 7‑year‑old victim has been identified as Edi Mari Hernandez .
Family members said Edi Mari had been walking with her older sister when she was fatally attacked.
A witness, William Smith, who works at a nearby barbershop, said he saw the child lying on the ground as people stood over her. “I heard a young lady, or somebody, say, ‘That’s the lady. She did it. She’s running,’” he told the outlet.
Video shows bystanders chasing the suspect with what appear to be jumper cables. One witness explained that a man struck the suspect with the cables until she fell, after which several people “started dropping the hammers” on her.
“It’s terrible,” witness Stephanie Johnigan told NBC Chicago. “Our babies are losing their lives younger and younger for senseless violence every day.”
Nearby resident Denesta Freeman expressed disbelief at the brutality of the attack. “For a 7‑year‑old like that to be getting stabbed, I never thought it would come to this point. I never did."
The Chicago Police Department is urging anyone with information about the incident to come forward.
