This section should help answer some questions related to the awards system of MyBB.

How do I pay for a donation award?
It's super easy setup and pretty self explanatory. Just go to our Buy Awards page.

How do I get a non-donation award?
Awards are given out at by the Admin at his sole discretion. You cannot get an award by asking for one via PM. Awards are only occasionally given out. Obtaining non-donation awards is rather difficult as it should be.

Can I create a thread to nominate myself or another member for an award?
No. Do not make any threads to nominate or suggest the granting of an award. If an official thread already exists you can post in it but that's it. Do not make a new thread for that purpose.

What are awards for?
Awards are simply a way for admins to show recognition to a member. The award itself normally has a special meaning attached to it. You can view the reason an award was given by going to a members profile then clicking their award's details. The awards page also displays meanings for each award.

How do I get the donation awards?
We have multiple awards you can obtain via a donation. For example you can get the Green Emerald Donator award by donating $20 to HF. If you donate $50 or more to HF, you'll get the Rich Bitch award. All awards are for separate one-time donations. So to get Emerald and Rich Bitch you need to donate at least $70 in a single donation. We do not accumulate small donations toward awards. The Grand Amethyst is a $1000 one-time donation. You can Buy Awards here.

Do member upgrades and sticky purchases count toward donation awards?
No they do not. Donation awards are strictly for pure donations.

Do you accept Bitcoin for other donation awards besides Bitcoinage?
Yes. We have begun accepting Bitcoin for donation awards. Donations must be made through our BTC processor at the current BTC valuation. If 1 BTC = $120 USD then you must donate .418 BTC for the Rich Bitch ($50+) award. When buying awards the payment processor will convert correctly the price of the cryptocoin you choose to USD.

What are Bitcoin, Doge, Ethereist and Dash?
These are all crypto currencies. If you need further help in using them please refer to our Crypto Currency forum.

What is the Gift award?
The Gift award Gift Award is the best award to buy for another member. You can buy it also for yourself just in case you don't have any friends. The description for the award will read either "You bought yourself a gift" or "A gift from MEMBER". You can buy as many Gift awards for different members as you'd like but only one award per member will be granted. The Gift award is $25.

What is the Brony award?
The Brony award Brony Award is that "damned if you do" type of award. Be aware that I will very likely criticize you negatively when granting the award in the actual description. So expect to be roasted if you do buy the Brony award which is $100.

What is the Legalize It award?
The Legalize It award Legalize It is the first political statement award on HF. It's in support of legalizing and decriminalizing cannabis in America. 25% of all donations go toward NORML.org which is an organization dedicated to reforming marijuana laws. While not everyone will agree with the legalization stance, we at HF feel this award is inline with the freedom our website and member base represents. You can purchase the award and make your donation here.

How long after I pay before I get the award?
It's normally within 15-30 minutes depending on your payment method. With crypto currency (BTC,DOGE,DASH) you have to wait for confirmations which can take a few minutes up to a couple hours. If after 24 hours you still don't have your award please contact Admin with your transaction id and payment info.

Can I change the display order?
Yes. Go to Sort awards page and arrange them how you'd like. There is a fixed fee of 100 βytes to change the order.

I think I'm qualified to get an award. Who do I contact?
No one. What you believe about your qualifications to get an award is irrelevant.

I want to know how to get a specific award.
We do not assist members in gaining awards. No descriptions will be given beyond those on the help docs and in the awards description.

Another member has an award that I want. They said they got it by doing X.
How another member obtained an award should not be your concern and it's not a path for you to gain the same award. Awards are given out solely at the discretion of admins.

I think another member deserves an award. Can I nominate them?
No. We don't care about who you think deserves an award.

I sent a PM to an admin about an award. They never responded.
Admins are busy. You weren't supposed to send a PM about an award anyways. Admins often completely ignore award requests without a response. Don't expect the award or a response.

Awards seem really hard to get but I see some members with a lot of them.
Awards are hard to get. It's intentional. We don't just hand out awards to everyone asking for one, who believe they deserve it. Otherwise everyone would have 10 awards. That's ridiculous.

I heard I can buy awards. Is that true?
The fact is that sometimes a donation is made and a show of appreciation is the granting of an award. We don't sell awards per se.

Can I suggest a new award?
No. Awards are created by the admins only at their discretion. Suggestion for new awards are ignored. Do not PM staff or create a suggestion thread for new awards.

Can someone else pay for my donation award?
Yes, they can use the order form to donate and buy an award for you. Just make sure they enter your UID where it's requested.

Can I buy someone else a donation award?
You sure can. Just make sure the UID is entered where it's requested.

I have a forum. Can I get the plugin?
The plugin is called My Award, and it's for MyBB forum software developed by the admin Admin. You can obtain the plugin at MyBB Central.

Can I sell my award to someone else?
Currently no. We used to have a feature called Awards Market but it's no longer available.

Rules and Etiquette

Hack Forum Rules
1. Do not harass or threaten other members.
2. No Infecting members with malware, backdoors, or viruses
3. No direct links to infected downloads in posts or profiles.
4. No posting of personal information that isn't yours. Privacy is to be respected here. This includes any passwords, logins or dumps.
5. No adult images or links to adult websites.
6. One active HF account is allowed meaning multiple accounts will not be allowed unless you are either reporting your original account as hacked or your original account was closed for inactivity. Ban evading will result in the permanent closing of your old account and new accounts. No exceptions.
7. Advertising of competing sites is not allowed. This refers to any website with a hacker forum that's similar to HF or has a relatively similar forum structure. Advertising includes signatures, PMs, profiles, and posts.
8. No posting of fake programs.
9. No threads or posts for donation begging. This includes loan requests or asking for investors.
10. Read the violations for profile policies and rules in that help doc.
11. Any rules posted in the forum's header should also be reviewed. Some forums have special policies that must be adhered to. Don't post in any forum without reading them first.
12. Any marketplace-type threads must be in the Marketplace category under the Market tab with the exception of Marketplace Discussions forum and its subforums (not intended for marketplace style threads).
13. No advertising or posting of Discord channels unless you are in Vendor group.
14. All Marketplace rules and policies must be followed.
15. These Disallowed Blackhat Activity are restricted.
16. Off-Site Communication contact methods not allowed to be posted by non-upgraded members. This includes the posting of your email, Discord, or Telegram account names.

Posting Etiquette of Hack Forums
1. Post in the correct category.
2. Use good grammar. Basically, start sentences with a capital and end it with punctuation.
3. Don't double post. That's when you post one after another instead of editing your existing first post.
4. Don't cross post. That's when you repeat a post in multiple threads or categories. Also, it applies if you post a thread with the same or similar content multiple times across forums or in a single forum.
5. Don't post leaked content. Leaking is when information is taken from one place and posted somewhere else without giving any credit.
6. Create relevant subjects for threads. Shit like "OMG" for a subject is immature and asinine.
7. When posting content from another site, credit the site; use quotes and link to the original content (unless it is a competing forum, in which case you shouldn’t be posting the content).
8. Be kind to others. How hard is it not to be an asshole?
9. Act like you're older than 16 even if you aren't.

Reporting Posts

Below is a list of all the official report options and their meanings. When reporting a post please make sure that the post does violate a site rule or policy. Action will be taken by staff members at their leisure. The decision on what action to take will rest solely on Staff. Reporting a post does not guarantee any action will be committed. If you would like to report a user for breaking other rules which do not have accompanying posts as proof, such as someone having multiple accounts, private message a staff member.

To report a post or thread, press the Report button at the bottom right-hand corner of the thread or post. You must select an appropriate option based on the rule being infringed upon by the thread or post, and then press the Report Post button. If you are not sure which option to select, read the following descriptions for each.

Unverified Discord Sharing
If you display your Discord username on your profile, in a post, in PMs/Convos or anywhere on the site you are required to authorize and verify it in our channel which will then display it on your Trust Scan (instructions). Anyone that shares their Discord username without being verified must be reported under this reason.

Blackhat Activity
Hack Forums does not tolerate even the slightest discussion of black hat activities as listed here. Discussion of any kind on these topics will result into issuance of a warning. Certain cases will warrant a ban as Staff deems fit.

Out of Marketplace
All marketplace-style threads or posts such as buying, selling, trading, offering a paid service, appraising, and auctioning belong to the Marketplace. Users failing to comply will earn a A seven-day posting ban and a warning is the penalty for posting marketplace threads outside of the Market tab. This includes threads with "optional payments" or "not free" remarks.

Posting Etiquette
Threads, posts, and characters in threads and posts that are non-contributive, are non-supportive, and are generally incoherent fall under this. This includes but is not limited to the following variations and instances:
  • Avoiding character requirements in a post (currently minimum of 25) by adding empty characters, special characters that do not appear when posted, fillers, useless text (e.g. "25 char", "bump", "msg2short" or "tooshort") or a ridiculous amount of smileys to bypass the limit;
  • Explicitly repeating what another user said;
  • Posting of memes as an answer to the topic;
  • The intentional use of broken English (e.g. Dolan Speak);
  • Trolling; and
  • Quoting posts without adding to them or adding something but your reply's character count is not above 25 characters (quoted content doesn't count).
Other cases are at the discretion of the staff member who receives the report. Note that administrators, Staff, Mentors and moderators are not subject to this rule in the sections they moderate as they do not have a character limit to begin with.

Wrong Forum
Threads that are not in the proper forum are to be reported using this option. Marketplace-style threads not located in the Marketplace should be reported as Out of Marketplace instead of this. Threads or posts containing a referral or survey link that is not in the Referrals or Survey Says section also fall under this.

Marketplace Violation
Members are expected to be mature enough not to bash each other's sales threads. For a complete list of violations that fall under this, refer to this document. Below is a summary of the latter, which include the following:
  • Any post or thread that violates the sectional rules of Marketplace sections;
  • Bumping of your threads with poor posts such as "I am online" , "I am offering support" or "I am still selling";
  • Bumping of threads that are not yours with poor posts as mentioned above, as a support team member role or otherwise;
  • Discouraging a sale without proper reason;
  • Pointing to the thread of competitors;
  • Posting and deleting posts in order to bump threads (PBD); and
Customers (that have an Active/Completed/Disputed Contract with the vendor) posting negative reviews is not a violation and should not be reported as such. Users abusing this option will be sanctioned.

Advertising Competing Site
Hack Forums will not stand for the advertising of competing forums in any thread, post, or profile. Competing forums are other forums that have any number of sections dedicated toward hacking such as the ones found here. Some sites may be advertised with the approval of the administrator; contact Admin with the link asking where you can post it.

Any post or thread which contains any defamatory, hateful, racist, or otherwise threatening remarks towards a user, multiple users, threads or sections belong to this report option. Such posts may inflict multiple warnings as they also fall under poor-quality posting.

Profile Violation
Users may not violate any of the profile rules listed here. Reporters are asked to report just one post of the user in question and Staff will take action as necessary. Posts that admit to having multiple accounts fall under this as well.

Adult Content
Posts or threads may not contain any graphic images, links to or discussion of adult or gore-filled sites, nudity, obscenity, vulgarity, or anything else not appropriate for the eyes of anyone under the age of 18. Likewise, the buying, selling, trading, requesting, offering, appraising, and auctioning of related accounts is forbidden.

Donation Begging
Content that requests for monetary donations or gifts in any shape or form is not permitted, including the asking of loans and investments. Hack Forums also does not allow the posting of charity and funding-related threads and posts.

Personal Information
All posts and threads may not contain personal information about anyone. No phone numbers, addresses, IP and e-mail addresses, names, or contact information of any kind about anyone other than yourself. An exception is granted to threads and posts located in the Deal Disputes section, wherein relevant report information may be posted as an image only.

Providing a direct link to any malicious file such as Trojans, spyware, or malware to infect members is unacceptable. Reporters are to provide conclusive proof before declaring a thread or post as such, and report the post they made containing the evidence (instead of the post in question) for Staff's perusal.

Old and new policies alike that do not fall under any of the above report options or have not been given their own yet would be classified as Other. This option currently includes the following reasons:
  • Any post or thread violating a sectional rule not covered by the other options;
  • Contests past their due time i.e. fake;
  • Gravedug thread with a useless reviving post;

Marketplace Safe Trading

Safe Trading
While we want the safest possible environment for trades, the reality is that Hack Forums is not always a safe place to conduct business. To minimize the risk of dealing in our marketplace, we recommend following these steps before dealing with someone on this forum.
  1. Use the Search Feature to search the UID & name of the member you are planning to deal with. If someone made a community alert/deal dispute against the member, you'll be able to find it.
  2. Check the Deal Dispute Database for any (open) deal disputes made against the member you are planning to deal with.
  3. If you've purchased a site upgrade, check the Trust Scan of the member you are planning on dealing with. While it shouldn't be the deciding factor on whether to deal with someone or not, it's very useful to see if an account looks legitimate and secure, or if it looks shady.
  4. ALWAYS use Contracts! Contracts are there for your safety, as well as the rest of the Hack Forums community. Use them to make sure everything is well documented in the event you need to dispute the deal.
  5. Check the Market Profile of the user you're planning to deal with. A market profile contains all Contracts a user has made on Hack Forums, as well as their Business Rating (B-Rating). You can also find a redirect to the deal disputes if there are any on a user.
  6. Use Common sense! This is by far the most important thing to remember. If something looks/sounds too good to be true, it probably is!
  7. If you get scammed and seller wants you to close the dispute DO NOT close it until you're satisfied with the outcome. More info here.
What is UID and how I can find it?
A user id (UID) is a unique identifier for each member on the forum. When you navigate to someone's profile page, the link you see in your browser is something like hackforums.net/member.php?action=profile&uid=129349. The 129349 is the UID of that member.

Methods of communication
At HF we offer a few ways to communicate with members. One is Private Message system and the other is Conversation system. We highly recommend using official methods of communication as they are on-site, once sent they cannot be altered at all and you know who are you talking to. Messages in Conversation cannot be deleted. If one party deletes his messages in PM system, the other party still has it. Also, we offer an option to export PMs and Convos.

Dangers of using off-site communication
Members often resort to using off-site communication services such as Discord, Telegram, Skype, etc. Main drawback of these services is that you can't know for sure who are you talking to. There are many impersonators posing as (highly reputed) sellers from HF and many members fall for it when they get contacted on Discord for example. Usernames (handles) on some off-site services such as Discord can be faked and they can look like the username (handle) a member put in their signature or sales thread. Also, some platforms allow messages to be edited and/or deleted. Here are some red flags when using off-site communication:
  • A person wants the deal to be very quick. They might rush you and want you to send the goods first.
  • A person wants the deal to be done without a HF contract.
  • A person refuses to do verification via PMs or Convos on HF.
There are always risks when doing deals online. That's why we highly recommend using on-site PMs and Convos to communicate. At least you know who are you talking to. That's one less risk to deal with.

Becoming Staff

This is an FAQ about becoming staff for Hack Forums. We hope this helps you and answers all your questions.

What are the requirements to become staff?
We have no specific requirements to list for you. However it stands to reason a staff member should be well respected, understanding of the current rules, mature, and professional. Account activity may also play a role. This doesn't mean 3000 posts of garbage will get you on staff. The quality of your membership is going to be based on the quality of your posts.

How are staff chosen?
Staff are selected by Admin with the input of the other staff members. Normally staff starts a nomination list and members are reviewed for a few days. Then an invite is sent to the member asking if they would like to be on the staff.

Can I moderate a specific section?
We only have a few forum moderators on the site. Some forums don't require a moderator at all. The forums that do require a moderator will have one chosen by Admin.

Should I send Admin a PM about being on staff?
Absolutely do not PM Admin. You will not get a response or at least one you will like. Staff members do not nominate themselves. Staff are chosen and invited.

Are staff paid?
Staff are not paid on HF. Each staff member is a volunteer.

If I become staff can I abuse other members?
Nope. You'll be removed and probably banned.

Stolen and Lost HF Accounts

Compromised and Stolen Accounts

In the instance your Hack Forums account is compromised or lost, your options are limited.

Use the contact form, and choose "Stolen/Lost Account" for a subject. Provide as much detail as you can. If the staff discovers your account was compromised, it will be closed to prevent damage to the account and scams.

If you have lost access to your account because of credentials like your email, password, or 2FA we will not assist you with account recovery.

If any account is stolen or lost and then has Deal Disputes threads, scammer B-Ratings, or Deal Dispute Database entries against the account it will be closed and marked as "lost/stolen scammer" and you will not be allowed to return to the community under any condition.

All account reported lost or stolen are potentially subject to account closure at the discretion of the admin. If you lost your credentials you are irresponsible. If your account was stolen you are not security minded.

All upgraded accounts now have full access to our Gauth (2-factor authentication) account security feature. It is highly advised you enable it. On the Gauth page are instructions to backup your security key in case of a lost, stole, or reset device. It's vital you have a backup method because we will not guarantee account recovery. Gauth enables you to secure your account and the burden is on you to maintain your own account security.

So it's clear to everyone, HF accounts cannot be shared, transfered, or sold. Any evidence we have that gives us the impression an account is no longer in full possession of the original account owner is subject to being closed.

We reserve the right to close any account for any reason at any time.

Protecting Yourself From HF and Members

Using Hackforums Safely
This article should help you use HF safely, minimizing the risks of getting your computer/online accounts compromised by a rogue member, and protect your data online in general.

HF's safety policy
Hackforums will not be held responsible for any actions of its members. While we do not allow any malicious activity from our members, and do our best to eliminate it, Hackforums members are often the target of such activity, whether by an outsider, or a rogue member. If you notice any malicious activity from a member, please report it to our staff by using the reports system (if the malicious content is in a post), or private messaging a staff member for other types of malicious activity. The said content will be removed, and the member responsible for it warned or banned.

Some tips for your safety
  1. Use an antivirus and keep it updated, unless you're a linux user.
  2. Use a firewall.
  3. Learn what phishing is and how to protect yourself from it.
  4. Don't click suspicious links. Use your common sense to determine which links you can trust. A malicious link could infect your system, in some cases even if you have an antivirus, or steal your browser's data (cookies, or browsing history), therefore seriously compromising your security.
  5. Before downloading a file posted on HF, first check the comments from other users about it. If there aren't any determining comments, you can scan the file yourself by uploading it to NoVirusThanks and post the result as a comment in the thread for other members to see. If the file is infected, it would be greatly appreciated if you report it by using the Report button at the bottom right corner of the post.
  6. If you still get infected, check this forum.

HF Site Access Problems and Loading Errors

Hackforums.net employs a variety of technology to prevent D/DOS attacks. Some of them may prevent a regular user from viewing the site. Below we will try to answer as many questions about this as possible. Please read them thoroughly before contacting staff.

How does the server firewall work?
One of the best defenses any site has is its server level firewall. Currently we have it set for a certain amount of connections to add you to the block list automatically, thus effectively cutting you off to the server itself. You can trigger this firewall in a number of ways. One is by opening too many tabs in your browser. The other is by refreshing a page too often. To prevent being firewalled you'll need to change your habits when using HF. Another option is to change the settings of your browser.

In the address bar, type: about:config
In the filter type: connect
Alter the "network.http.max-connections-per-server" to 10

In the address bar, type: about:config
In the quick search type: connect
Alter "Max Connections Server" to 10

If problems still occur lower the number again to 8. Neither setting should really give you a noticeable slowdown to the web. Most servers automatically throttle you anyways, but HF will go one step further and firewall you.

How do I get unblocked?
If by chance you get blocked, you should connect from a proxy, and use the contact form. Select "Firewalled", and enter your regular IP along with your username. It will be reviewed within 24 hours. The firewall is flushed periodically.

I heard HF blocks entire countries. Is that true?
Yes this is true. Hackforums.net has many countries blocked. The list is extensive. Please note that country blocks are not a slur on the people of that country. These blocks represent problems with IPs originating from these countries. Many are part of botnets, rogue datacenters, and high crime locations. Country blocks are one effective way to eliminate "bad traffic". So don't take it personal. Do not ask for countries to be removed. The block list is currently not published.

Can you whitelist me?
We do not whitelist individual member IPs under any circumstance.

Check Your Hosts File
A crypter was released by another hacker forum that went in and changed your hosts file of Windows to prevent you from accessing HF. Effectively this will point your computer to nowhere when you want to visit our site. We deem this practice as unethical but we do not have the power to stop it. You can check if your hosts file was altered by opening up in your browser this file:
If indeed you see entries for hackforums.net please edit the file, and restart your browser.

I'm using a VPN but it's not working.
We have a lot of VPNs, datacenters, and proxies blocked. Basically you have no guarantee of connection to the site unless you're on a home connection in an English speaking country.

SQL Errors
If while browsing you've come across a MyBB error page citing a MySQL error please don't be immediately alarmed. Our website is very busy and while we try to minimize server problems and loading errors they do happen occasionally anyways. If you have hit an error we ask that you wait 1-2 minutes and refresh. If it's persistent for 10 minutes you can try to see if anything is posted on our Official HF Twitter page.

Popularity System

What is the popularity system?
It is a method for privileged members to give their opinion about other users for the rest of HF to see.

What is the popularity system used for?
For the most part, it is just a metric for users to give their opinions on a member.

Why do some members have more popularity points than comments?
Some users can assign multiple popularity points to their popularity comment. The amount of popularity points a user can give depends on that users upgrade. A l33t member can only give +1 and 0. Ub3r members have the option of assigning a value between -3 and +3. Staff has the option of assigning -5 to +5. Lastly, Admins can rate from -10 to +10.

Can members write anything they want when giving popularity?
No, currently all popularity messages are canned (pre-written) and you have a selection to choose from.

Can members ask other member to give them popularity ratings?
Yes, you can ask members to give you popularity ratings. It used to be a policy violation but now it's not.

Can I have my popularity reset?
No. HF does not reset individual member popularity for any reason. Keep that in mind when you interact with members on the forum.

I feel I was popularity abused, how do I report it?
At this time we don't have a system in place to report abuse. Technically since messages are canned there is zero abuse.

What is revenge popularity and is it allowed?
Revenge popularity is the practice of getting a negative popularity rating after you have given that member a negative. This is not against the rules. Clearly if you leave someone a negative, you can expect them to reciprocate. Think carefully about your choices when leaving popularity ratings. If you fear revenge popularity ratings, then reconsider. Admins will not take action on revenge popularity.

Can I get a negative popularity rating removed if it doesn’t make sense or isn’t fair?
You may contact the member that left the popularity rating in order to understand why it was left. However, you may not harass or threaten the member. Staff or Admins do not remove popularity ratings.

If a member that left me negative popularity rating gets banned, can the popularity rating get removed?
Sorry, but at this time we are not removing the popularity ratings given by banned members.

I was scammed. I want to leave them a popularity rating concerning it.
You will need to use the Contracts system for Marketplace activity. Popularity ratings are unrelated to the Marketplace.

Disallowed BlackHat Activity

These are the blackhat hacking activities that we do not allow as part of our discussions here on Hack Forums. We don't explain the logic behind each forbidden activity, but it's somewhere between morality, ethics, and legality for each one. We ask that members do not participate in discussion around the following topics. If you've received a warning and been asked to read this, please do so carefully.

All discussions of Carding is disallowed on HF.

Financial and Identity Fraud
We take this very seriously. We do not allow posts in relation to these subjects. Any information posted that's designed to commit financial fraud may result in the immediate closing of your account.

Blackmail and Extortion
We do not want this type of discussion here. Obvious criminal activity and very illegal.

Replica Merchandise
We don't allow the selling, promoting, or discussion of fake brand merchandise.

Fake ID's
We don't allow the selling, promoting, or discussion of fake identifications.

Cracked Software
HF is not a warez site. No selling or sharing of cracked software.

Murder for Hire
Don't use HF to find a hitman.

Profile Policies, Violations, and Rules

Basic Rules List
1. You cannot buy, sell, trade, or share your account.
2. We do not allow multiple accounts except a UID_TEMP account as explained in our "Stolen and Lost HF Accounts" help doc.
3. No adult images such as nudity.
4. You cannot link to competing sites. We consider competing sites to be anything that has topics similar to those under our Hacking tab.
5. No site goals such as "1000 Posts" or "100 Popularity".
6. All text must be in English or readable as English in the case of fancy unicode.
7. You cannot impersonate other members.
8. No advertising of ddos, stress testing, or booter services in your profile.
9. No linking to shock sites.
10. Usernames must have at least 4 visible characters.
11. Profiles should not have special character which break or alter HF layout.
12. We do not allow site goals or achievements in signature this includes but not limited to posts, popularity, upgrades, and groups memberships.
13. Signature images can be no larger than 650x200 pixels and 500k size. Animated gifs should not be annoying.
14. No sharing in your signature off-site communication methods like email or Discord unless you are an upgraded account.

I received a "Profile Violation" warning but it doesn't say anything else. What was it for?
If you did not receive a PM with your warning then I don't know. But if you read this entire Help Doc, you should be able to figure it out. Just make sure to understand our policies to avoid future warnings.

What is the maximum signature image size?
Signature images can be no wider than 650px, no taller than 200px, and no bigger than 500k.

What if my signature only has text? Is there a limit?
We don't enforce an exact size with text. Our settings are 255 characters including mycode. Do not enlarge your signature with enormous text or lots of spaces. Just be reasonable with your sig size.

Why not extend the max characters or at least discount the mycode for signatures?
This is our limit. You'll have to deal with it. We are not going to extend it or change how it works. Everyone has the same limitations on HF.

Why can't I upload an avatar?
HF has some default avatars in the gallery. Upgraded members are the only ones who can use avatar uploads. If you've received a no permission page, it's likely you're a regular member attempting to upload. Use the avatar URL which means you must have the image hosted elsewhere. Please make sure the remote avatar is within site guidelines.

What's the max avatar size for remote avatars?
Remote avatars are resized to fit on the postbit but MyBB does not check the K size of the file. However, we enforce a 100k max size. Anyone using a higher sized avatar will be warned and their avatar removed.

Can I use the same avatar or signature as a staff member?
No, you may not. Impersonating members with your username, usertitle, signature, or avatar is going to be a reason to ban you. We take this really seriously. The potential for abuse is enormous so it will not be allowed even as a joke.

What are the rules for usertitles?
Basically the same as all the other rules for a profile. Don't impersonate staff, flame members, use religious or political symbols and don't advertise a competing forum.

I have a forum or am a member of one can I advertise it in my profile?
HF has a strict rule about advertising competing sites. We consider competing sites any forum with subjects or forum categories that are similar to ones under our Hacking tab. Advertising competing sites is not allowed in profiles.

Can I have sexy pics in my profile?
To a point, you can. We do not allow nudity and if staff feels your image is too overt, it could be removed and you might receive a warning.

Someone is flaming me or calling me a scammer in their signature. What can I do?
Contact staff please. We'll look into it.

Can I have site goals in my sig?
We used to allow this but we no longer do. Goals we don't allow include popularity, groups, posts, or upgrades. See rule #16 in Rules Help Doc.

Can I have referral links in my sig? Stuff like adf.ly?
Yes, this is allowed on HF. Be aware Sharecash and some other services are censored.

Can I have donation request or link in my signature?
Yes, you can have them in your signature but we have rules about threads/posts for begging. If you want a donation begging signature, go for it.

I don't see where my MSN, AIM, or email display in my profile. Can I put them in my signature?
Yes, you can but we advise you do not. This site has some malicious users that might use your personal information in ways you don't expect. You can be targeted very easily by posting any private data about yourself on this site. So be careful if you do.

Can I put fake links or shock site links in my signature?
No, you cannot. We won't allow deceiving links such as fake spoilers links or links disguised in order to trick members into visiting shock sites. Use some common sense please.

Account Profiles and Pruning

Why do you prune data on the site?
We do this to keep our database as efficient as possible. The smaller our database the better the site runs. It's a necessary evil.

Are posts pruned after a certain time?
No, they are not. The only posts that are on occasion pruned are the ones in the Junk section which are removed from member view. However this is not very often and we often have hundreds of thousands of posts in our Junk.

My post count just dramatically fell. What happened?
Most likely we just deleted a lot of threads in Junk and did a post recount. If you noticed your post count drop it's likely you're a post whore. Try to get a life and care less about your stats.

Are PMs pruned?
Yes they are. Our current policy is this:
Regular Members: PMs older than 2 months
L33t Members: PMs older than 6 months
Ub3r Members: PMs older than 1 year

Can I save my PMs before they get pruned?
We don't usually announce prunes of PMs. You can do PM exports on your own at any time via the usercp. Once you export we ask that you prune on your own to help alleviate space.

Where do I empty my PMs?

How do I export my PMs?

Do you prune members?
We do. We delete members that have not activated their accounts fairly often. We also delete 0 post members older than 2 months. So most of our member base is actually posting members.

Do you prune Convos?
We do not prune conversations as a whole. We prune messages in Convos that are older than 6 months. Pruning occurs daily!

How do I export a Convo?
Enter a convo you want to export and an option for exporting is in the upper right corner of the convo window. When you hover over it with a mouse, it says "Export Convo".

Can I export all Convos at once like PMs?
Currently, that is not supported. You can only export one by one.

Can you delete an account so I can get the username?
No, don't even ask. If it's a zero post member you can wait till the account is pruned but don't ask us to delete an individual account for you. Even if it has one post from 2 years ago and they've never returned we will not delete the account just so you can have a username.

My Bytes were deleted, where did they go?
The Bytes for a member are set to 0 if there is one year of account inactivity. They can't be recovered.

What else do you prune?
Well we've covered PMs, posts, Bytes, convo messages and members. There isn't anything else that's not MyBB standard like clearing out the search terms daily or the other things that do not affect your account.

My account is "closed". What happened?
Member accounts that have not been logged into for 6 months or more are subject to being closed. The account will no longer function. We will not recover these accounts. We do this to protect old inactive accounts from being stolen then used inappropriately by someone else. If you wish to rejoin HF you can may do so as long as you were not intentionally banned from HF due to a violation. You will need to use a different username and email.

Can you alter, delete, or prune my username history?
Sorry but no. We do not alter a member's username history. It currently displays the previous 6 months to all users except Admins and Staff who can view the full history of username changes. In the rare case you just accidentally entered your password instead contact Admin for removal but also immediately change your password and username.

Can I get my account closed or deleted?
Upon request we can close your account. We will first review the account to ensure you are the original account owner. If we decide to close the account it's permanent and you will not be allowed to return. We do not delete accounts once posts are made. We will not delete an accounts threads, posts, or PMs but over time these might eventually be pruned.

Advertising and Paid Stickies

Paid Sticky Threads
Paid stickies are important threads that members pay in order to place on top listing of the forum display. HF offers a unique direct to member sticky thread advertising. It's very effective and many repurchase sticky threads. Paid stickies are exempt from the requirement to be on-topic and we allow paid stickies for Marketplace threads outside the marketplace while it's a paid sticky. The only exceptions are Non-Free Accounts which also must be in its respective section.

Most sections are limited to 6 paid stickies per forum section but a few are even less. On occasion an error may occur and an extra position might get placed.

You can't cross post with your partners or resellers. If you do expect your sales threads junked and a warning.

Stickies are sold in one week blocks and you can purchase up to 4 weeks. Special arrangements can be made under certain circumstances for long-term advertising. You'll have to discuss those terms with Admin.

We have special pricing for a sticky in any section that's priced at $20 per week. A full month is only $75.

There are no paid stickies allowed in certain sections like Site News or Marketplace Discussions. Prices are subject to change without notice and we reserve the right to refuse any sticky without reason.

To get payment details and order a sticky please CLICK HERE.

The system is now fully automated and allows you to buy in sold out sections to be placed into a queue. You can even renew a sticky before it expires to be placed immediately or queued when next position is available. Our system will send you a PM from Sticky Bot informing you when your thread is stuck and other actions.

Payment Types
We currently only accept cryptos for advertising. A number of options are available and include but are not limited to BTC, ETH, DASH, XMR, LTC, and BCH.

Banner Advertising
Current Options Include:
300x100 Header/Top Fold (6 positions available) $125 for a week
468x60 After First Post in Showthread $25 per week (example)
300x100 Footer (4 rotating positions) $25 week

All banner ads graphics are be served by HF servers to avoid problems. Banner ads are not displayed to upgraded (l33t+ub3r) members which do not account for the majority of our daily visitors.
To find out more or ask any questions PM Admin.

At this time we do not use these types of ads nor do we plan to.

When to Contact Staff

Before you contact an Admin or Staff of HF please read this entire Help Doc. Staff does not have unlimited time to answer the questions of millions of members. We've created comprehensive help docs which answer almost all questions. So it's important to us that our time is not wasted. Read read read.

Can I contact admins about a popularity rating abuse?
Only if you've carefully read existing policies. Located HERE.
Important to note that if a popularity rating doesn't violate a policy we will not remove it.

My account was stolen. How do I recover it?
Read this Help Doc on Stolen Accounts. Basically your best shot is to use the contact form and provide detailed information.

Who should I contact about my ub3r/l33t upgrade?
Read our Help Doc on Upgrading to L33t or Ub3r.

I want an award. Who do I ask?
You have to take the time to read our Awards Help Doc.

Who do I contact to sticky my thread?
We do not take suggestions from members for stickies. We simply can't sticky every thread members want. We limit the quantity. So don't contact us. If you want a paid sticky then please read our Advertising with Hack Forums doc.

I know a member is ban evading. I'd like to report them. Who do I contact?
For that you must contact Staff or an Admin by PM to verify this. Your identity will remain private.

I know a member who is abusing popularity ratings. I'd like to report them. Who do I contact?
First make sure that it's abuse defined by our Popularity System help doc. If it does then contact Staff or an Admin via PM with any evidence you have.

I want to donate. I can't find a link. Who do I contact?
You must PM the owner Admin. He will provide you instructions.

I was given a warning I didn't deserve. Can I get it removed?
It's not likely. If you have a question about the warning please PM the staff member you received it from. If you click your profile then click the warning percentage you should get more details including who warned you.

I filed a report but no action was taken. Should I directly contact staff?
Try to report the post again. If it doesn't allow you then it's still in the report queue waiting for action. It's also possible staff decided no action was warranted.

I have a great idea for HF. Who do I contact?
We are not taking suggestions via PM. Our suggestions forum is open. You can post there.

I want to be a forum moderator or on staff. How do I do this?
We have a doc for Becoming Staff. That's a great place to start.

A member is harassing me via PM. I want to complain.
Staff won't take action so don't complain to us. You can add the member to your ignore list. They will then be unable to PM you.

Someone is threatening to release my DOX. Can you help?
Our site policy does not allow the posting of private data. However we can't take action based on off-site activity. We sympathize but there is very little we can do.

I'm getting spam PM advertising. How do I report it?
Forward the PM to Staff or an Admin member. We will investigate it immediately.

I have a valid complaint about staff that I want to report to admins. Is that allowed?
Yes it is. You can PM Admin but be aware you're not likely to get results. Often members feel staff action taken on their account is unfair but fact remains that it's impossible to always be fair. Your complaint will be quickly reviewed and if necessary action will be taken.

Can I PM Staff to ask them to change my username, edit my post, junk my threads or other similar tasks?
No you may not. Being able to do things such as change your username, or edit old posts, is a subscriber-only privilege. It is unfair if non-paying members get these abilities too, through asking Staff; so we make it our policy to ignore all requests related to this. Please read the help doc Upgrading to l33t or ub3r for any further information regarding upgrading to a subscriber account.

I don't see my question answered in the help docs. Am I safe to contact staff?
Apparently. Let's hope so. Go for it. You've been warned.

What happens if I contact an Admin or Staff and my question is answered in the help docs?
You're probably going to get a negative popularity rating and your PM ignored. You might even get a warning too.

HF Ad Banners

Use the following images for your signatures, blogs, social networking accounts, or your own website. You're free to use them as long as they link to hackforums.net. Thanks to all the members who submitted banners and those members who created these.

Marketplace Violations

Marketplace Violations Rules List:
1. Vouch Begging - Do not ask for a Vouch Copy unless the OP explicitely offers it.
2. Sales Trashing - Do not try to ruin sales.
3. Vouching - Unless you are an HF Contracted customer with an attached TID in the Contract, you cannot vouch for the seller, product, or service.
4. Only Vendors group can link to Autobuy sites.
5. Only HF Contracts can be disputed in the Deal Dispute forum.
6. LQP Bump - Do not bump your sales threads with LQP (low quality posting). Instead use the Post Bump for Bytes feature (see below).

How do I bump my sales thread if I can't figure out a valid reply?
For a Bytes fee you'll be able to bump any HF thread you wish, including your marketplace threads. Use the arrow-up icon on the first post of your own thread. You cannot bump threads you didn't create. Depending on the usergroup, price for bumping your thread is different. Current pricing is:
  • Regular Member and L33t : 400 β
  • Ub3r: 200 β
  • Vendor: 100 β

Can I sell for other members?
Yes, we allow partnerships with non-members. If you're selling for an existing member you both cannot advertise the same service or product.

Can I ask for vouch copies?
Not unless the OP (original poster) has clearly stated that vouch copies are available. This is the rule in the entire marketplace. You can't ask for them in PM either unless OP stated you can do so.

Can I give out vouch copies?
Yes you can but you must clearly state you're offering them in your first post and any stipulations like X copies or you require a PM. If no vouch copies are available we ask that you alter your OP so it reflects "no more vouch copies" or "vouches no longer required". Staff will need to know you did have vouch copies available at some point.

Can I post a Marketplace style thread anywhere I want?
No, you cannot. All Marketplace style threads must be in the Marketplace tab. Some sections also require a specific upgrade class such as Ub3r.

Are all marketplace policies listed here?
No, they aren't. Please make sure to read Important Sectional Forum Rules before you post in any of the marketplace subforums. Some sections have additional policies which are only valid for that section but Marketplace Violation warning is issued.

What is the HF IM XMPP server?
The HF IM XMPP service is a special chat protocol we run on our server called XMPP. It's been around for many years. We offer XMPP services to certain upgraded member groups. The domain is hackforums.im so as a user you'll have the account UID@hackforums.im.

How do I use XMPP?
Most people download the Pidgin client for their computer. Some mobile apps are also XMPP compatible such as ChatSecure. Be aware any client requires OTR (Off The Record) and TLS 1.1+ or better. Once you have a client go to the HF IM XMPP page and the rest should be self explanatory.

Why should I use XMPP instead of Skype?
Other chat services do not offer the same level of security that XMPP along with OTR would. OTR is an end-to-end encryption that prevents even us the chat server admins to read your messages. We do not log messages and even if we did we'd have no way to know what content was in it. Part of the benefits of using the HF IM XMPP is that everyone using it is given their UID@hackforums.im making it quick and easy to associate, connect, and verify an HF account. When you IM with 1@hackforums.im you know indeed you're not being contacted by an impersonator. The HF IM XMPP also allows for more privacy. You will not need to expose additional private data when using the HF IM XMPP.

Can I change my XMPP username?
Sorry but you cannot. Your buddies can set an alias for you. To ensure integrity of usernames all members will get UID@hackforums.im and are unable to change it.

Can I set my own password?
No. We create random passwords to avoid potentially easy to crack passwords or having common-use passwords.

I lost my password. How do I recover it?
On the HF IM XMPP page the option to set a new password exists. It will take only a few seconds. It will also automatically log out any existing sessions just in case your HF IM XMPP is stolen or compromised.

Can I share my account with someone else?
No, that's a serious security risk for you and for members. Anyone found sharing their XMPP are subject to a closed account on HF and the XMPP service.

How do I know it's secure?
Because we require OTR. That means you can't even chat with anyone that doesn't have it enabled. There are currently no known exploits to break the encryption. If one is found we will alert members and patch the server. You can do your own research into OTR if you don't believe us. The encryption process is called end-to-end which means it's from your client to the recepient client with no requirements from the server. With a simple plugin we have installed we make sure that all clients have it enabled in order to exchange chat messages.

What information is logged?
We only log a few things in order to prevent abuse of the system. We log the IP's and timestamps of logins, account creation, password changes, and resets. Chat logging is disabled but even if enabled it would look like this:

Who can read my chat messages?
No one but you and the person you're in chat with.

I got ripped off after doing a deal in HF IM XMPP. What do I do?
Well unfortunately we're not able to help you. Staff do not get involved in deals or deal disputes. All deals are at your own risk.

What software does HF IM XMPP run?

Edit History and Limits

At HF we strive to retain quality content that's posted by members on HF. We currently limit the amount of post editing based on a number of criteria.

First criteria is that in any 60 day period there are limitations to the number of edits a post can have depending on your usergroup:

5 = Regular Members
10 = L33t
15 = Ub3r
Unlimited = V3ndor

If the edited post is the first post of a sticky (paid or free) it has unlimited edits. If a post has a current Sales Tag it has a 20 edit limit.

Second criteria is based on time that has passed since the creation of your post. If you are past that time, you cannot edit nor delete your post. It depends on your usergroup, too::

24 hours = Regular Members
90 days = L33t
180 days = Ub3r
Unlimited = V3ndor

By purchasing a paid sticky/sales tag to the thread, you circumvent the second criteria. If you're a V3ndor, second criteria doesn't apply to you just like the first criteria.

We reserve the right to undo edits to any post. Keep in mind you cannot delete your post if the post is the first post of the thread (aka original post). Ub3rs used to have a junk feature which removed a whole thread but it has been removed for years now.

Deal Disputes and Scam Reports

Deal Disputes

If you made a deal on Hack Forums and you feel like you got scammed, or you're otherwise unhappy about it, there is one thing you can and should do.

  1. Dispute the Contract. Go to the Contract of the deal in question and click on the dispute button. Fill out every field and dispute the Contract. A Deal Dispute thread is automatically generated once the Dispute is created.

Please understand that we can't get your money back or force a member to complete a deal. Do not contact Staff or Admins. You are warned repeatedly that deals are at your own risk. HF will not get involved. If you did not create an HF Contract which was Approved and Active then you have no options to report the Dispute.

I disputed a contract and member wants me to mark the dispute as resolved so they can resolve their part of the deal (refund me, give me better service, complete their end of the deal because they couldn't make it, etc.). What should I do?
DO NOT mark the dispute as resolved until you are satisfied with the outcome. If the seller is blackmailing you, please send any on-site proof to staff so they can issue an appropriate action against his account for breaking blackmailing policy. While that might not get your money (or whatever that was disputed) back, we take blackmailing seriously and believe no member should go through that.

I opened a Deal Dispute, now what?
An HF Admin will review the Dispute. It can be marked Invalid, an attempt to ask the parties to resolve the issue, or actions against either/both accounts can occur such as Account Closure.

I won a Deal Dispute how do I get a refund?
HF does not escrow payments and as such we never held your funds or claimed to be responsible for them. Only the other party or a middle-man would be able to refund you.

Will HF escrow payment for a deal?
We will not. You can however seek out a 3rd party middle-man which might. We don't endorse any specific members as MM.

I have a negative b-rating that I think is false/unfair. Who do I contact?
Nobody. We do not review the b-ratings.

I've heard that V3ndors get their disputes/negative b-ratings removed if they contact Admin, is that true?
Yes and no. Only reason where Admin invalidates the deal dispute and removes negative b-ratings is when if there has been abuse of the contract system. Typical scenario is when a person opens multiple accounts and disputes every single contract that was started by that account using vendor contract templates. Keep in mind that it's the most frequent abuse scenario but not the only one.

A member who gave me a negative b-rating and/or opened a deal dispute against me is now banned/closed. Can I have my negative b-rating and/or deal dispute removed?
No, unless you're a V3ndor and there has been contract system abuse.
