This thread was made because I have received several questions regarding upgrading to Windows 8. I have also seen this question a lot in this section, and it's time to settle this.

Let's start, I'll show you a collage.

There are quite a few differences between Windows 7 and Windows 8, I own a Windows 7 PC and a Windows 8 Notebook.
Windows 7 is definitely good for you if:
• You want a stable operating system
• You want a operating system for work
• You want a operating system to game on
• You want a highly customizable operating system
• You want an operating system that uses a small amount of RAM in general.
Windows 8 is definitely good for you if
• You want a nice-looking new operating system
• You're a developer for Windows 8 apps
• You have a TouchScreen device
• You can get used to a different OS fast
• You are prepared to discover bugs frequently
I'll explain my statements.
Windows 7 is a stable operating system, more programs support Windows 7 and are still being developed to be compatible with Windows 8. The apps Windows 8 has, use more RAM than a normal program would on Windows 7. Windows 7 has a lot of third-party programs that could help you to customize it. Windows 8 also has programs like that, but fewer in number. Windows 8 can only reach it's max potential with TouchScreen devices, look at the design. It's obviously made to work in cooperation with TouchScreen devices. So if you do not possess a touchscreen device, I recommend Windows 7. Windows 8 has a entirely different design, the most notable thing is that it doesn't have the windows start button at the under-left side of your screen. You'll have to get used to this.

Some things about Windows 8 that might help you to choose:
• Windows 8 has a faster start-up and shutdown time than Windows 7.
• Windows 8 moves files slower than Windows 7.
• Windows 8 is generally faster with rendering video's.
• On factory settings, Windows 8 laptops & notebooks run out of energy faster than Windows 7 laptops in general.
• You are able to link your Microsoft email account to your Windows 8 System.
• While Microsoft's Internet Explorer probably isn't used by any of you, Internet Explorer 11 is the default browser of Windows 8 and it it's security is tighter than any other browser on Windows 8.
• Windows 8 blocks apps that are not created by "trusted" publishers. This does not apply to programs.
• Windows 8 Can be annoying with it's new desktop.
My conclusion:
Windows 7 is the new Windows XP, Windows 8 is the new Vista.
If you currently possess a Windows 7 device that doesn't allow touchscreen, stick with it. If you are looking for a new laptop/pc, make sure it's touchscreen-compatible and consider Windows 8.
If you're using your PC/Laptop for your work, stick with Windows 7.
I hope this helped a bit, I've seen a lot of threads about this subject.
