So we all should by now know that the current ongoing raids are legit and not a huge troll/smear campaign/attention whoring.

On May 14 reuters released an article that is most likely connected to this:

By Jim Finkle and Joseph Menn

May 14 (Reuters) - The FBI is getting more aggressive in pursuing cyber criminals and expects to announce searches, indictments and multiple arrests over the next several weeks, the agency's official in charge of combating cyber crime said on Wednesday.

"There is a philosophy change. If you are going to attack Americans, we are going to hold you accountable," the FBI's Robert Anderson told the Reuters Cybersecurity Summit in Washington. "If we can reach out and touch you, we are going to reach out and touch you."

Anderson said the FBI would show "a much more offensive side" to its cyber program, which he took over in March.

He cited the previously unreported indictment of Dimitry Belorrossov as an example of a recent success in the agency's battle against cyber crime.

The Russian national was arrested at an airport in Spain last year and lost an extradition battle after being accused of running a botnet that attacked some 7,000 Americans, a case that Anderson said was relatively small compared to some that are in the FBI's pipeline.

Still, the arrest was one of a few that prompted Russia to warn its citizens to be careful traveling to countries having extradition treaties with the United States.

Anderson said the FBI would not be deterred from pressing charges against suspected cyber criminals who lived in countries that refused to cooperate in extraditing them.

In the past, the agency has avoided naming overseas suspects in cases where they could not be extradited in a bid to avoid embarrassing other nations.

"There's a lot of countries that will not extradite. That will not stop us from pressing forward and charging those individuals and making it public," he said.

Anderson said more criminal hackers are going to be arrested under his watch, rather than turned into sources of knowledge about how the underground operates.

But there can be exceptions when it comes to national security priorities, he added.

Most notably, the leader of the [censored] hacking group, Hector Monsegur, has had his sentencing delayed more than a half-dozen times as he cooperates and helps break into high-value intelligence targets overseas, according to court records.

Anderson declined to say how many such hackers are helping the government in that way.

Jim Lewis, a senior fellow with the Center for Strategic and International Studies with strong ties to the intelligence community, estimated that the FBI might work with about a dozen such hackers, more than in previous years.

Anderson declined to comment on the status of the probe into a weeks-long cyber attack on retailer Target Corp that came to light in December. The investigation is being led by the Secret Service. (Reporting by Jim Finkle; Editing by Ros Krasny and Jim Loney)

We can expect more similar events in future.

I often read something like this:
"Good that i bought IM3 and not BlackShades".
PLEASE do not feel secure because of this. The FBI can get the customer data of ANY RAT if they want and they will most likely start investigations on other RATs too. If you have ever bought a RAT and left on a single little trace you are in fact in danger to have a warrant against you in future.

While most people here know that RATing is not as bad as owning a botnet it is still enough to get your electronics taken away and if used for any illegal activity it can even lead (it is unlikely, but can!) to jail time.

So don't continue to tell people the FBI doesn't care about RATing, that a VPN will protect them from getting caught or that you don't need to expect any punishment.

Owning a RAT can lead to investigations against you, it doesn't matter which RAT and it also doesn't matter if you bought it with Cryptocurrencies or used a VPN/Proxy w/e. We are talking about FBI investigations here and they do know how to trace you.

So stay safe and if you can't deal with the consequences please do not buy any RAT.

This is not entirely true. In the USA they would be hard pressed to get a warrant for owning a copy of blackshades as its not illegal to own them in the USA. Computer Fraud and Abuse act is broad but it boils down to "Did the malware touch any computer not owned by the individual?" and that is very hard to prove from just some paypal records. Maybe if you are posting threads saying "CHEK MUH 40000 BOT BOTNET BITZCHZ" then you will have trouble, but thats to be expected. US users are most likely very safe.

Whats happening in non-us countries is that they get a call from the FBI that says "Oh yeah xyz is a computer hacker we traced him to buying some sweet illegal things" then the cops in that country head on over, raid that kid. Steal his computers which are running unencrypted drives and find proof to charge him with. Basically seizing stuff to find ways you violated the law, pretty crazy.

So generally if you bought blackshades and didnt use it for malicious uses and live in the USA you are probably fine.

But other countries have other laws, for example in japan its illegal to even keep malware samples without a court order. Thus blackshades would be illegal.

Know your laws, Make sure your drives are secure and nothing will come of it

This is entirely true and i hope everyone stays safe, I actually know someone who was arrested 2 days ago for a botnet of mediocre size.
In my opinion there are far more pressing issues they could be concerned with lol they are just flexing, it will pass over when they realize they really cant do much.

Sadly the pure suspicion of a crime is enough to get a warrant. I personally never used BlackShades for anything illegal and still my electronics are taken away. If you say that we should know our laws, then please inform yourself correctly before.

Yes but owning blackshades isnt a crime and they have no proof you are using it for malicious uses. It would be like attempting to get a warrant because someone owns a gun and thus might shoot someone with it.

What country were you in?

I am German. Sure owning BlackShades is not illegal at all, but as it is mostly used for malicious stuff they suspect you to do illegal stuff with it. That is what they base their warrants on and there was an US raid with such a warrant too. Warrants are made to find proof not because of proof. 🤝

natürlich, the FBI is highly regarded amoung the international community. One call from them and suddenly you have some interested german parties.

My bit about warrants was directed at USA based people, I know a bit of german but no german law

They are trying to instill fear, this is a fear tactic.

Just hold on to your balls until this and the net neutrality thing blows over.

I did read a lot about warrants the last few days and I can sadly tell you that you can definitely get victim of a search-warrant for buying BlackShades too.

Scroll down to US:

It will confirm that.

Yepp and you deserve another -3.

You shouldn't be using/doing illegal things if you aren't smart enough to cover your tracks. It doesn't matter if the owner of black shades gave over the info to the fbi. If you wanna do these kind of things you need to learn to protect yourself first.
