So i have recently obtained hashcat and was wondering, how do i make it bruteforce an MD5? Im pretty sure MD5 is the default hash it cracks.. But i cant seem to get it to bruteforce the hash.

my command is:

hashcat -a=3 hash.txt
hashcat --a=3 hash.txt

Any help you can provide would be appriciated.

Neither of those works from what i can tell. Do it like this:

hashcat -a 3 hash.txt

You are missing
-> The hash type -m (MD5 is 0)
-> You should probably specify an output file with -o
-> Define a charset to bruteforce with

Honestly, I'd suggest just using the GUI to generate a few attacks so you understand how it works. You can download the GUI from hashkiller + read https://hashcat.net/wiki/doku.php?id=mask_attack
