Maintenance Sucks

Woo, glad we're finally back!
Been pretty rough the past few days!
Murphy's Law: Anything that can go wrong, will go wrong.

Anywho no worries on the downtime (This is the first major one I seen since I first joined.) And thank you for still keeping this place up :).
Holy crap I'm pissed. The InnoDB has a bug with the fulltext index stopwords and my work was fairly pointless today.

I was trying to add a larger stopwords table so the index would be smaller. Requires the stopwords table be updated then the index to be rebuilt. The index takes about 45 minutes to create.

So I did all that the past 45 minutes and it doesn't look like it changed the index. I'm rather livid about this.
Completely understandable man, it was out of your control. We appreciate your work
Thats OK. Sites got to be updated and upgraded at some point in time.

On a side note:
This was like starting a server from scratch. Not fun. All I wanted to do today was optimize the database. Then I figured I would upgrade MariaDB. Then I found out it required FreeBSD 10+ because of a library. Then after I install the major version upgrade everything just feel apart. Which I should have expected I guess.

I think I'll have to go the MariaDB dev team and make a bug report about. Almost positive I got everything correct.

Doesn't mariadb use the XtraDB fork instead? 😧

It is weird that MariaDB decides to fuck itself now (albeit I never used *BSD before just RHEL or Debian (and their derivatives)) never had any issues with it and always had a good time with it.

Anywho its good to do it now then to have to eventually do it later. Best of luck in your future maintenance ;P
Appreciate the updates.
I really like how you post messages during down time it gives us an idea of what's going on.
Yeah, upgrades suck a bag of dicks. No problem we understand, thank you for the updates.

I really doubt you're making the changes I am. Most people just install and use as-is. I have to tinker with settings for performance. When you have just one table that's 35GB you have special needs. Search is a real bitch for any heavy database and it has to be optimized else you will definitely have problems.

Yeah apologies I forgot to add the (albeit I don't use it as an advanced user, just a regular) portion
Anyone who bitches about a small down time like this should really go outside. Good work omni.

I don't consider the downtime small. Anything past about 2 hours is rather long imho.

We had about 5 hours yesterday and about the same today. Ridiculous.
