I used the API to check my in PM inbox for unread messages and send info of the unread messages to my phone via a push notifications:

This is just a userscript but if you want to spend a one time fee of $5 to Pushover then you can use this to get push notifications on your mobile device.
HF PM Push Notifications Userscript.

Just add your HF API key, your Pushover Device ID, and your Pushover API Token, and it will send you a push notification when you get a PM (need to have 1 tab of HF open).
It requires users to be using Chrome + Tampermonkey.

A little sloppy, but it gets the job done.
Eventually I'm going to have a service do this.

Eh, probably not this, but perhaps something similar to how the Instagram API works using Oauth (user signs in on the official website, it sends back an authentication key to the application that can be used to interact with the API).

He means only R3kt and Ub3r members will be able to create applications using the API. IE. only they will be able to generate API keys.
