Anime on the path to becoming Mainstream: What do you think?

Hey AA! Recently saw this video below by YTer Gigguk talking about the recent growth of anime in the international stage from where it was only 4-5 years ago and how its now more popular/relevant in our society than it has ever been:

That being said, what do you guys think about anime slowly getting more and more mainstream? It seems that there is a good chance the line between what is/is not "anime" will get blurred the more international it becomes and content/quality might get more varied. The identity of being an anime fan might also no longer have its uniqueness as it once did. However this also means that there's more anime that could be made and perhaps attention brought to the underpaid animators and any other underlying issues.

So what do you guys think? Is the mainstreaming of anime good or harmful for the industry/fandom/etc overall?

I believe it has already been mainstream for quite a while. The fact that things like Toonami and Adult Swim were showing some of these show years back just proves the point. Yea it may not have a huge audience in the States like it does Japan, but I don't think it matters.

The media is easily accessible in the United States and countless movies have release in theater here, I think that counts as being mainstream enough.

Yeah I remember watching DBZ, Naruto, Bleach on Toonami as a kid.

Nostalgia.

I would say so but its still quite not here yet but it will be I think.
I don't care, because Anime is already 99% fan-service, and borderline-hentai.

I just cant' stand it anymore, I liked anime because it was unique, there was things to learn and think about, now it's just generic trash that somehow people watch.

It's sort of like the gaming industry, it gets ruined when it goes mainstream.

No Idea what anime you're watching, but it's not like that from the ones I watch.

You are the type who likes something first and when it goes viral you talk about how you found it and it's not even a big deal, everyone else is just late to the show. The type who hates it when what you are doing gets big because you aren't that special one who knows all about this unique thing that nobody else knows about and can brag about your superior knowledge and how you are such a diverse being.

There is so much anime in the works that there is something for everyone now, and you hate it. You hate that you aren't that weird cool friend who is super diverse because the people around you are now more diverse than you are when it comes to a topic... like anime. So you're regular, average, and nothing special. And so you hate what you used to love because it has 'betrayed you' to become much more.

OT:

Yeah, I think anime is becoming much more mainstream for sure. Last week my 37 year old cousin was talking to me about how he just started watching Attack on Titan and had looked into other anime like Naruto, One Piece, Bleach, and more. I would have never guessed that a man who is a stereotypical man's man who works with his hands "because it's an honest living" and doesn't even let out more than a less than enthusiastic "Fuck... that hurt" when he broke his hand in three places, would ever come to know anything about or even like anime.

Anime is growing very rapidly, I just hope that the issues talked about in the video are overcome.

Are you projecting? There are legitimate people who dislike newer anime.

I want more seinen, I want more anime that's not trying to sell me figurines or body pillows, or trying to catch my attention with androgynous men, or kawaii girls.
to be honest it is a double edged sword

it's marketed to netflix & crunchyroll so the mainstream normies pay for it
normies would probably never buy into the figurine other misc anime stuff though so their other normie friends don't already think less of them as a human
