As part of HF's movement towards quality over quantity, I wanted to bring up something I'd noticed on my return from 'abroad.' Awards these days seem like pez dispensed candy rather than real on-site achievements. Part of my belief of what helped to drive quality engagement from the community previously was a sense of actual and legitimate reputation on the site. There were reasons to put in effort because you could get recognition or build some level of respect in the community. Similarly with the new popularity system over reputation from back in the day, these small things rewarded higher levels of effort and were harder to obtain; whereas today, awards and popularity are largely meaningless in the community except for show or flare. They don't actually 'mean' anything.

Food for thought on maybe separating out rarer / more achievement awards from donation awards or creating a new tier of rarer awards might be good for promoting more quality as you continue down your path towards remaking the community and site. Giving incentives for quality and separating out these incentives so that they're more meaningful could be of some help in driving the community in that direction.

Adding them to existing awards wouldn't make them feel more valuable or important.

Account Trophies would def work. I'm not entirely opposed to being able to show more than 1 at a time, but some of the accounts out there rn with like 30+ awards is a little silly. Is what it is, but I'm just saying that back in the day more than like 3 awards was legit af. Getting up to 10? You were a god amongst men. For myself... I think I was at 8 or so. So basically Hercules.

Jokes aside - I like the suggestion for awards. Hell I'm even game for awards that once you have all 3 you can pay bytes to combine them into a new and rare award.

I liked the previous suggestions too, because I think it'll be awesome to earn awards and hunt for more special ones, but having the option to combine similar awards is something pretty cool!

Here's my pitch - Allow people to earn Christmas ornaments and other festive awards. At the end release a Christmas tree that people can buy and if they combine all the festive awards they get a rare fully decked out tree. Allow it to only be created during the month of December and you'll have people go crazy in December trying to earn all the awards and finally get that nice hard to get award. It gives us a bytes sink / activity booster.
-edit- I just used the Christmas tree as a base idea, but it works for other holidays and events as well.

There are purchasable awards and there are awards which are earned through various things. Some awards are very special and are only given when the contribution is worthy and many other things. I think it is fine the way it is. Purchasable awards brings income to HF.

This thread is funny because I have been thinking of doing a 2nd install of the awards plugin. Basically what OP suggested but I'd use my old school method of images instead of the map so that it could be animated gif's. Also larger in size, maybe 32x32 would be appropriate. Maybe in 2023. Got other things to do first.

GIFs for awards would be cool. When Xerotic was contemplating what his award would look like I suggested using a GIF, which would have been very unique. He thought that wouldn't be compatible with future award formats.

I think the award size right now is perfect, i’m sure others agree. Award gifs could be cool if done correctly and not over done with flashing colors and such. Who was the designer for the OG awards and why isnt he making them anymore? Felt like that style of pixels fit so perfect.
