Bitcoin Core Developer hacked for 200 BTC then begs the FBI for help

This is literally pure comedy, a Bitcoin Core developer stores his BTC on a server in a hot wallet that got hacked for 200 BTC because his server was compromised. Then he proceeds to beg law enforcement agencies to crack down on the transaction. You literally can't make this shit up even if you tried.

If you are a Bitcoin core developer who cannot secure your own funds because you keep your funds on a hot wallet on a compromised server due to malware, you are a moron who deserves to lose it.

Quote:Just to be clear. Mid November Luke posts about malware found on his server and he has no idea what happened.

Today Luke posts about his Bitcoin wallet being emptied that was on his server. And he has no idea on how that happened.

I think i know what the problem is here.

His keys weren't on his server, that's a weird leap the community had decided to make on their own based on his server being compromised days/weeks ago. Luke himself has clarified that the server had no keys stored on it.

Both his hot wallet and cold wallet got hit. The biggest mistake that I can see that he has made was his main desktop was both where he did his every day work from, and where he dealt with his crypto wallets. He very likely got exposed to some sort of malware that compromised his personal machine, and that led to a key compromise. For example, the PyTorch nightly build was compromised for 5 days recently, if he downloaded PyTorch during this time he could have gotten owned (he has confirmed that he hasn't).

Mistakes were made, he could have done better, and with the amount of money available to him, he definitely should have done better. Def could have been more prepared with additional hardware segregated from his main workstation. Think he mentioned having access to old 10+ year old hardware that he was struggling to get going.

Ah sweet clarification and good information. Thank you.

Keeping it on a hot wallet is bizarre, especially for someone with his amount of knowledge and experience. The FBI tag was the cherry on top.

It looks like ~199.17 BTC from cold storage, and 3 transactions from what I assume to be hot wallets for 2.5 BTC, 5.5 BTC, 9.65 BTC.

This is my best guess when he says both hot and cold wallets are compromised.

His earlier tweets made it sound like the 200 BTC was from a hot wallet, but I think he was making two separate statements. One, that his hot wallet is compromised, then two, 200 BTC is also stolen.
What's hilarious about somebody getting hacked and robbed? This has nothing to do with the bitcoin network being compromised, to your chagrin. It's likely a personal security oversight, which can happen to anyone. It's not at all unreasonable to appeal to law enforcement when you're the victim of a crime. Your overt Schadenfreude is going to set you up for a major fall soon, you need help.

Unfortunately, you are the sole owner and custodian of your own keys. So whenever I see people beg and cry for the government to intervene on their own mistakes it's hilarious, especially from a bitcoin core developer. You hate me because I am right.

You should see this guy's anti-government tirades on Twitter. What does he do the instant he mishandles his own money? Beg the government for help

If your server gets hacked and you have value on it, and even if you dont, there's no shame in alerting the authorities. Things like 0days and supply chain exploits can happen, through no fault of your own.

Yeah, I get it no shame in alerting the authorities except a week ago you kept shit-talking the government in every other tweet.

You expose your keys to malware, it's your fault.

I don't feel bad for someone who milked money out of the community, then turned out to have millions stashed away.

Nah I'm talking about this grifter Luke. Seems like I am not the only one happy he lost his funds.

200 BTC is pretty sizeable. I wonder if the FBI would step it. Prob would.

You could really click bait this this thread and said 1/10th of the BTC developers got hacked.. because their are only like 10 developers for BTC. Get it?
