Hey guys,
I just wanted to ask y'all what you think would be some good apps to recommend to new Mac users. I will be making a thread along with (hopefully) screenshots, links, and descriptions next week so we can have a super-mega-awesome thread to link new Mac users to.
This will NOT be a thread for debates over which programs to recommend.
For example, I will be recommending both Chrome and Firefox to new users because they are widely used here at HF. (Yes, I will be including Safari and Opera too.) So, don't turn this into a thread of just flaming.
Also, please don't double post apps. That just makes things harder for me to sort through.
And, one last thing. If you could write a description for the app (especially the hacking ones, lol), that'd be nice and you will get credit for it! If you want to help contribute to this thread with, say, a hacking section or a graphics section, please send me a PM and we can work it out.
I don't want this to be my own personal project. Why? Because I don't know all of the apps out there that people would recommend. Everyone has different opinions and I don't want only my opinions being expressed since my opinions do suck sometimes xP.
Anyway, here's a list of starting applications along with the categories:
WEB BROWSING
- Firefox
- Google Chrome
- Safari
- Opera
VIDEO AND AUDIO PLAYBACK
- iTunes
- VLC
- Spotify
- Vox (Midisu)
- Perian (Midisu)
- Max (Midisu)
- SoundCloud (Midisu)
- XMBC (Midisu)
HACKING
(Please help me out here xP)
MENU BAR APPS
- CloudApp
- Jumpcut
WORK/STUDENT
- Microsoft Office (Young Katbodi)
- iWork
- OpenOffice (Young Katbodi)
MAINTENANCE
- AppZapper (Young Katbodi)

- Burn (Young Katbodi)
- Macports (Midisu)
VIRTUALIZATION
- VirtualBox (Midisu)
- VMWare Fusion
- Parallels
Etc, etc. Feel free to add a category. I don't have my Mac right now so I'm not really in the best position to be making up all of the categories and stuff, but whatever haha.
Anyway, let's see what the Mac OSX section of Hackforums has to offer! If you have any questions or want to help out, PM me and we can either talk there or I can give you my MSN and add you to my list of three contacts :3
Oh yes, please use the following form to submit your application(s) to help keep it clean!
(Please keep in mind that only the CAPS part is highlyy required (well, I can't require it, but if you would just do that, that would be freaking awesome!)
YES, I WILL BE UPDATING THE OP WITH YOUR APP SUGGESTIONS! :D Please please please keep the thread clean. No discussion of applications, just post an app and be done with it. PLEASE SAVE YOUR DISCUSSIONS FOR THE ACTUAL THREAD COMING IN ABOUT A WEEK!
Sample:
NAME OF APPLICATION: CloudApp
CATEGORY OF APPLICATION: Menu Bar
Link to Application: http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/cloud/id4...mt=12&ls=1
Cost: Free, but with limitations. Upgrades available.
Description: Allows you to upload documents, pictures, and other files to the cloud and automatically puts a link in your clipboard!
Any cons?: As stated before, the limitations for a free version. But, I honestly haven't found that to be a problem.
