HOW TO SECURE YOUR OMNICOIN WALLET
[IMG]http://s3.postimg.org/dvwcnickj/logo2.gif[/IMG]

STEPS

1- MAKE SURE YOU DON'T HAVE VIRUS INSTALLED ON YOUR COMPUTER

This is probably the most obvious guide's step but at the same time the most important.
Make sure your computer doesn't contain any type of virus/keylogger/malware installed.
I personally advise Avast (as Free Antivirus) and Avira (as Paid Antivirus) but you can use your favourite one. If you have doubt as to which is the best check this thread: Antivirus recommendations v2

2- MAKE SURE YOU HAVE DOWNLOADED THE OFFICIAL CLIENT
At the moment there is only one Offline Client and is OmniCoin-qt.
The latest download of Omnicoin-Qt can be found here.
There are executables for all platforms including Windows and Mac.
Go ahead and download your version, and install it. If you have and problems during this guide with Omnicoin-Qt you can ask for help on #omnicoin on IRC. If you don't have an IRC client use webchat here.

3- MOVE YOUR WALLET OFFLINE

The wallet file contains the private keys we just printed for your Omnicoin addresses. As mentioned, these are required in order to send Omnicoins. If anyone obtains this file they can steal your coins. Encrypting the file will help in preventing someone from accessing the private keys, but the best way is to take the file offline!
  • Close Omnicoin-Qt.
  • Locate your wallet.dat file. The file should be in the following locations in Windows and Linux respectively:
    - Windows users:
    C:\Users\[YOUR USERNAME]\AppData\Roaming\Omnicoin\wallet.dat

    - Linux users:
    /home/[YOUR USERNAME]/.omnicoin/wallet.dat

  • Move your wallet.dat file to several offline places (cold storage), such as 4x USB sticks.
  • Ensure you do not leave a copy of wallet.dat on your computer, cut and paste it to the last USB stick. This ensures that if your computer is compromised no one can get your private keys/infos and steals omnicoins.

4- ENCRYPT THE WALLET

This step is optional, but is highly recommended. It helps prevent someone from accessing your private keys should they steal your wallet.
Go to Settings >Encrypt Wallet and insert a passphrase.

Note: After encrypting wallet, it will not ask you for the password whenever you start the program. It will only ask for the password whenever you try to withdraw/send Omnicoins.

4- ENCRYPT OMNICOIN DIRECTORY
  • Windows users:
I advise you to encrypt your wallet's directory or to create an encrypted disk image and paste your client. You can use Windows Official Crypter or download TrueCrypt (open source) or Jetico BestCrypt (commercial).
    Directory:
    C:\Users\[YOUR USERNAME]\AppData\Roaming\Omnicoin

  • Linux users:
    Steps:
    Code
    apt-get install ecryptfs-utils #encryption download
    cp -pfr /.omnicoin/ /tmp/ #backup
    mount -t ecryptfs /home/[YOUR USERNAME]/.omnicoin/ /home/[YOUR USERNAME]/.omnicoin/ #encrypt directory
(Here you can find all eCryptfs' documentation

6- PRINT PRIVATE KEYS

Each Omnicoin address has a private key associated with it, the private key is required to send Omnicoins from the address to another address. You should keep a copy of your private keys on paper (paper wallet) and store it somewhere safe. You can later use your paper wallet to restore your wallet, should you lose your wallet file.
Go to Help>Debug Window>Console and type:
Code
dumpprivkey your-omnicoin-address
[Image: wWIaB1W.png]
The private key will be displayed in the debug window. Repeat for each address.
Copy the results to notepad and print. Delete the notepad file!

7- CHECK YOUR BALANCE

You can check your personal balance and activity without a client. To do this you just need to go to Omnicha.in and insert your OMC address. This allows you to check your account every time everywhere.

8- IMPORTANCE OF UPDATES

Make sure you have downloaded the latest version of Omnicoin-Qt. Check Omnicoin Section for news or check www.omnicoin.org.
No software is perfect, there may be security vulnerabilities found in your Omnicoin client as well.
Really good tutorial, your name "VirusTotal" totally boosts the thread.

It's a good and clear tutorial, easy to use for everyone.

Good job!

Wow thanks for this awesome tutorial bud! Layout is sexy
Thanks guys! Tell me if there is something to add/edit/delete ;)
It is ironic you advised advast when Omni said they are giving the wallet false negatives.:p
Please be careful when encrypting your wallet. Losing your pass phrase will result in you losing your wallet.

A lot of AVs reported Bitcoin-qt as false positive. This doesn't mean that Avast isn't good 👍
wow thanks op, very useful information :D

Good tutorial. I would advise against encrypting with Truecrypt since there's something shadey going on with it. But definitely a good tut. Thanks!
Great Tutorial !
Very good member :)
