Adobe Illustrator

Would you say you have to be talented on paper if you want to do cool drawings on illustrator? I've seen some really good DeviantArt work, and I'd love to start working on some myself. It would be pretty cool to post some work in this section as well.

Something like this inspires me:

How would you all recommend starting? I need the program and a decent tablet. Past that, just talent, right?

Spoiler (Click to View)
Second one is definitely from illustrator, not 100% about the first one, but you can do them both on ill'.
I suggest you buy a tablet. Cheers.
The second could be done in Photoshop as well, however, the first one looks like it's made in a Manga draw studio. It has really advanced drawing options.

For a tablet, I should recommend a Wacom Intuos to begin with.
So these things are basically freehand, right? Like you could expect these people to draw something similar on paper? I'm terrible at drawing, but I want to learn. I feel like I'm looking at world-class paintings and deciding that I want to do it too, but I guess I have to start sometime. Do these people have mad artistic talent or am I just easily impressed?

Lastly, what about something like this?

They could draw it on paper and scan it into their PC. I really don't know this one but it looks really cool.
You have a lot of advantages using illustrator over paper drawing. You can edit the vectors as much as you want, you can redo them etc. so if you really want to learn, the only thing that you need is a strong motivation.
Work > Talent. any-time.

I know, it looks awesome. I guess I could PM the artist too, but I'm not sure if he'd respond. This guy brings really cool stuff to DeviantArt.

I was kind of thinking it would be like that. It's like drawing while also having the perfect eraser. That's great. It's almost unbelievable that the fox could be drawn free-hand, but if that's what he did, I guess it's possible. Oh man, I'm gonna have hundreds of hours of work ahead of me. It'll give me something to do though. Are you familiar of any training programs or anything? I'm sure there's local classes for it, but I wonder if there's any top-tier classes online or step-by-step programs.

Are there any experts on HF in this specific area?
Can't say exactly, but personally I haven't seen people doing this kind of stuff, mostly do web design.

This is really cool... could be drawn in Illustrator and then enhanced in Photoshop?

Afaik you can do all of these in Illustrator, but more advanced drawing programs do exist which could be better depending on your art style. It seems like most of the work I see people do in Illustrator is cartoony in style, but I guess there's no reason why you couldn't do something a bit different.

Excuse my slightly off-topic question, but I've got to ask this.

I draw a bit too (mostly sketches) and I always wondered, what are the criteria of an artist choosing digital or physical medium for drawing? I am talking only about the aesthetics and not about technical advantages like erasing mistakes. Does it have to do with the texture (digital matte painting versus oil on canvas, for example)? Can classical painting techniques be applied to digital and vice versa?

I'd appreciate if someone could enlighten me.

Do you think Manga Draw Studio would be the best alternative?

Edit: I think this explains the first picture. It's from the artist's twitter.

Most people usually use Corel for those things; http://www.painterartist.com/us/product/...rack=mmptr
AI is mainly for vectors, not as much as sketching and drawing. I believe you are more interested in digital painting not just graphics design in general.

Do you think that first image is too HQ to be a scan? Idk how they'd make a scan that good, but one of the artist's other works seemed to be from a manual painting. I agree, these look like paintings. These programs may be a lot more suitable. Thanks for recommending them.
