Synopsis:
Quote:Ever since he was a child, fifteen-year-old Souma Yukihira has helped his father by working as the sous chef in the restaurant his father runs and owns. Throughout the years, Souma developed a passion for entertaining his customers with his creative, skilled, and daring culinary creations. His dream is to someday own his family's restaurant as its head chef.

Yet when his father suddenly decides to close the restaurant to test his cooking abilities in restaurants around the world, he sends Souma to Tootsuki Culinary Academy, an elite cooking school where only 10 percent of the students graduate. The institution is famous for its "Shokugeki" or "food wars," where students face off in intense, high-stakes cooking showdowns.

As Souma and his new schoolmates struggle to survive the extreme lifestyle of Tootsuki, more and greater challenges await him, putting his years of learning under his father to the test.

My friend showed me this anime right after we finished Prison School (a funny ecchi for anyone interested). While somewhat of an ecchi, it's very comical, and its ecchi side adds to this comedic effect (however there are times where it seems a tad excessive). The overall character development and story are done decently. Also, if you are a fan of cooking then you'll find this equally enjoyable ;)

Just because I like plugging these guys

I really liked this anime because I like cooking.
Food wars was a complete and utter disaster for anime in the western world, it has the possibility to bring anime to western culture in a fashion never seen before but it stabbed itself in the neck.

I agree that the Ecchi within the anime has at times degraded the meaning behind some aspects, however I believe that they use it for two effects. The first being an comedic/obvious effect, since the anime itself is listed as Shounen so it will set itself up to target that specific audience. However, I also believe that its used to describe the feeling and joy out of eating a really delicious meal which each person can only say occurs a few times in their life. That "ah, this is the best thing i've ever eaten and felt in my stomach" feeling you get from a good meal is being conveyed in this manner. So I do agree with you that its different and can be a bit over-the-top with it at times, but that using this method for the structure allows it to function with a unique spin.

I thought I felt indifferent towards this anime after watching it, but looking back, it wasn't really bad at all. I look forward to watching season two.
