So you're completely new to cryptocurrencies and you have NO IDEA where to start? You came to the right place! In this thread I will explain in detail and step-by-step instructions on how you can get into the game just like everyone else!

How many different type of coins are there?

There are 100's of them, you can view them on coinmarketcap. Heres the link: Click Here

How do I know which ones to invest in so I can get rich?

Hold on there cowboy, you can't just invest in any coin. You will have to do some research before deciding to invest into a coin. You can view the top coins on coinmarketcap. Number 1 coin is Bitcoin currently but that doesn't mean you invest in it just because its #1. It's a really sketchy market and prices are constantly changing. Only invest in coins that you think will get big. Try to look for coins that are priced low but are valuable. ALWAYS BUY LOW! Never buy when the price is high because coins tend to drop after going too high.

Great...so where can I research?

Well first place you want to go to is google. You can search up the coin and find results about it. Another good place to check is reddit as well as cryptocurrency news websites. Highly recommend going to bitcointalk and searching up the coin on there.

What are some cryptocurrency news websites?

BitcoinTalk - CryptoCurrencyNews - Crypto-News - CoinDesk - CoinTelegraph - CoinJournal

Where can I see live prices of the top coins?

Omniscient recently released a website that will show you live prices of currencies like BTC, ETH, XRP, XMR, STRAT, ZEC, DASH & LTC. - Snipta - Link
There's also another website which is preev. It has live prices as well but doesn't have a wide variety of coins like snipta. - Link

Awesome...so where can I buy some crypto?

Coinbase - You can purchase Bitcoin, Ethereum & Litecoin here - Link

Poloniex - You can purchase all sorts of coins here, it's an altcoin exchange so you will find tons of the ones on coinmarketcap. Has a great UI but has a lot of problems. - Link

Bittrex - Here is another altcoin exchange you can use. I would recommend this one over Poloniex only because they have less issues. - Link

GDAX - Link

Shapeshift (very usefriendly) - Link

Highly recommened sites to purchase bitcoin from with many different payment methods (including PayPal, Debit Cards, Gift Cards, etc.) I've personally sold bitcoin through Paxful. Very user friendly and easy to use!

LocalBitcoins - Link

Paxful - Link

Not sure how to start trading on Poloniex or Bittrex?

Here are some videos that will help you get started. (Can only post 1 video because of limit.)

Should I keep my coins on an exchange?

You should never keep your coins on the exchanges named above because sometimes they have problems which lead to frustration and missing coins. I recommend you download offline wallets (if available) for your coins. Simply search up the coin on google following 'offline wallet'.

Should I invest in a specific coin that my friend told me about?

I would do some research before investing in any coin. Especially if you're willing to put in a lot of money, only put in what you can afford to lose. ALWAYS DO YOUR RESEARCH. DON'T LISTEN TO ANYONE BUT YOURSELF!

Is there a portfolio I can use to keep track of coins I invest in?

There definitely is! These are portfoilios HackForums members made:

These guides were meant to reduce clutter in this section. Instead, they are being used FOR clutter. Now instead of there being 1000 threads on what to invest in, there are 1000 beginner guides all saying the same stuff.

This guide was already made ten times over.

And i'm not flaming you for contribution. I'm saying we need to sticky one of these beginner guides so that it will continue to reduce clutter.

I agree with you on that, didn't realize there were more threads.

What do you think about investing in Stellar?

Well I personally sold my stellar as I believe its not something that I see becoming huge. I sold and made some profit. I haven't done any research on it recently so I wouldn't know if one was to invest in it. I don't plan on buying back in.
