Claim & Set up Unique Ethereum Addresses!

Introduction

Today I will be teaching you how to claim and set up your very own unique Ethereum wallet address on the Ethereum Name Service (ENS), an official Dapp. Why would you want an ENS Domain name? Instead of sending Ether to a person's address at "0x15C497864", you can send it to killjoy.eth. Websites work the same way. You enter in google.com, not Google's IP address as it would be too hard to remember an IP address for every single website you visit.

Notes and Preparation

Resources

https://ens.domains/
https://registrar.ens.domains/
https://manager.ens.domains/
https://etherscan.io/enslookup

Before we begin, I would like to note a few things:
  • ENS domains are technically free, minus network fees.
  • All domains are auctioned.
  • You must have Ether.
  • Failure to follow this tutorial or guides on the website may result in lost funds.

You must have a wallet with one of the following:
>>>> In this tutorial I will be using MetaMask <<<<

Starting an Auction
  • Check availability
Visit etherscan.io > search the domain.

Picture (Click to View)

Great! Our name is available for us to start an auction to claim. Etherscan.io will let you know if the name is already taken or in the process of bidding.
  • Open Auction
ENS Registrar > Search domain.

After clicking more options:

When you click BID you will be prompted by MetaMask (make sure wallet is unlocked first).

After clicking submit, you will then be prompted to download your bids. Please store these in a safe and accessible place.

Congratulations! You have successfully started the bidding process on your domain. If your bid loses, 0.5% of your bid will be burned and the rest will be returned to you, including the extra Ether if you kept your bid secret.

Reveal Period

*This thread will be updated with more pictures for the next few steps in the coming days. It's a long process.

After three days, a two day reveal period begins. Everyone who submitted on the bid must reveal their bids. Failure to reveal your bid will result in lost coins. If your bid loses, your money will be returned minus a 0.5% fee.

When the reveal period is over, the person who revealed the highest bid is the winner. The winner only has to pay the amount of the second highest bidder! In order to receive the extra funds, the owner must send a transaction to finalize the auction and claim ownership.

Great! You won the auction! Now it is time to finalize the auction.

ENS Registrar > search domain > finalize bid with MetaMask.

Configuring Your Domain

Step 1. Set the Public Resolver

ENS Manager > search domain.

You can see the Public Resolver is set to: 0x000000.

Go to exchanges.eth for the most up-to-date Public Resolver. As of this edit it is: 0x1da022710df5002339274aadee8d58218e9d6ab5

Copy the public resolver address as highlighted in the red box above.

Go back to the ENS Manager > paste Public Resolver > click Set Resolver

Click submit to set the resolver

Step 2. Directing the domain to your Ether address.
Click the Resolver Details tab

When you click Set Address, you will be prompted by MetaMask to submit another transaction.

Let's do a small test to confirm everything is working properly. Open the MetaMask extension (or use any wallet you have ether in) > Send > enter your domain name.

Submit the transaction > go to Etherscan.io to see the transaction on the blockchain.

We can see that the Blockchain did not throw us any errors, so everything is working properly!

Outro

If you run into any problems, please post here with your domain name so I can take a look at what may be wrong. Hope this helps and share any awesome domains you may have claimed!

FAQ

Q. What happens to my ETH after I win the bid?
A. The minimum bid needed to win will be locked in the domain and cannot be returned until the expiration date. All extra funds from bidding is returned.

Q. What happens if I don't reveal my bid in time?
A. You will lose all of your ETH.

Q. Can I transfer ownership of the domain?
A. Yes! Simply set a new wallet address that the new owner controls. For an escrow service, use enslisting.com

Q. Can I use this address for other coins?
A. No. This is only available for Ether, including tokens.

Q. I am getting [xxxxxxx Error] on the Blockchain. What did I do wrong?
A. You probably have a bad Public Resolver or are not using the Owner Wallet address to send transactions.

Q. Why do I have to submit so many transactions?
A. This is how the Ethereum network verifies and confirms changes to the ENS smart contract.

Awesome information KJ, I was getting confused on how to set this up. Very helpful.
Emerging from the Shadows…
KJ and his quality, always providing helpful shit that makes me feel like a moron. But hey KJ whats CSS? [Image: 3uhCGZy.png]
Wow super useful info I didn't know this was possible, this will be great for official exchangers or middleman services, besides it will be cool just saying "hey send it to boniastar.eth" xD thanks for the info man.

Couldn't say it better myself brother.

Yep! No more going back and finding your address to copy and paste when you can easily remember this.
Thanks for the tutorial mate.

Hey thanks !
I have this :
"TIME REMAINING UNTIL REVEAL PHASE
Bids are closed

1969-12-29 15:50

Attention: Once the reveal phase has begun, you will have 48 hours to reveal your bid. Failing to do so will result in irreversible loss of funds. Revealing requires information stored in your browser; export your bids to make a backup of this."

My problem is why its says 1969-12-29 15:50? EDIT EDIT EDIT : Never mind now its says 3days.
And now I just have to wait approximately 2-3 days? Then I need to reveal my bid ? And then follow the other step in your guide ?

This is quite interesting indeed. Thanks for this. I wonder how soon before we see an OG ETH address shop around here. 😏

Another question why sometimes it's saying this: YOUR BROWSER DOES NOT SUPPORT SMART CONTRACTS

You read from the Ethereum blockchain, but in order to interact with it from your browser, download an Ethereum enabled browser like Mist, Parity or install the Metamask Chrome Extension.

And sometimes : "No account added to dapp"

But i have metamask ...
Ens registrar is so fucking laggy

HQ Guide, Thanks so much for this.

That is correct.

Like Orgy said, make sure your metamask is unlocked. Sometimes it's buggy and you need to restart your browser.

No, ENS needs to talk to ICANN who runs that. Maybe in the future.
Another amazing tutorial from Kill Joy, never fails to supply this subforum with the highest of quality content.
