“We’re doing this revolutiuonary war out of foppery and whim. Got it?” –Attenborough (LOGH) The Q-dex
Unfortunately, our team's Youtuber is still busy, however he will be updating his channel in the near future hopefully. For now, if you are unaware of his channel, here is the channel trailer:
Have you ever wanted to learn some cool Japanese words unique to their culture? Believe it or not, there are sometimes words that just don't translate back into our native language.
Today we will go over seven interesting Japanese words that we don't have in America today.
#1 Komorebi (木漏日)
Komorebi describes the effect of sunlight streaming through the leaves of the trees, the shadow created on the ground, or even in our curtains.
The first kanji 木 means "tree(s)," the second one 漏 refers to "escape," and the last one 日 is "light" or "sun." And there we come to the literal, yet very poetic meaning of the term Komorebi – the sunshine filtering through the leaves of trees.
The closest English equivalent is probably the phrase: dappled sunlight.
#2 Bakku-shan (バックシャン)
Bakku-shan is a term used to describe a girl who appears pretty from behind but not from the front.
#3 Mono no Aware (物の哀れ)
Mono no Aware is a phrase that describes the bitter-sweetness of a brief and fading moment of transcendent beauty.
It's that "last burst of summer" feel, or the transience of early spring.
#4 Tsundoku (積ん読)
Tsundoku is the condition of acquiring reading materials but letting them pile up in one's home without reading them.
#5 Kyōiku mama (教育ママ)
Kyōiku mama is a Japanese pejorative term which translates literally as "education mother."
The Kyōiku mama is a stereotyped figure in modern Japanese society portrayed as a mother who relentlessly drives her child to study, to the detriment of the child's social and physical development, and emotional well-being.
#6 Age-otori (上げ劣り)
Age-otori means to look worse after a haircut.
The word is actually extremely uncommon, and according to the 5th edition of the Kojien (an Oxford-dictionary alternative), it means "formally styling one’s hair for a coming-of-age ceremony, with the contrary effect of making oneself look worse than before."
#7 Wabi-Sabi (侘寂)
In traditional Japanese aesthetics, Wabi-Sabi is a world view centered on the acceptance of transience and imperfection.
It now also carries the meaning of accepting the natural cycle of growth and decay.

RahXephon
Synopsis (Courtesy of MAL):
Quote:In the year 2012 Japan was invaded by the Mu. Human-like beings from another dimension with blue blood.
In the year 2015 Tokyo is attacked by invaders, who are repelled by a humanoid weapon called a Dolem. During the chaos, Ayato Kamina meets Reika Mishima, a classmate.
During that same day, he is attacked by government officials but a woman named Haruka comes to his rescue, informing him that she was sent to get him by the Organization TERRA, and that Tokyo had been sealed in a time rift where time flows one third as fast as the outside world.
He flees from Haruka onto a train where he sees Reika once more. Arriving at the Room of Rah, he follows her to a tremendous egg where the Dolem RahXephon is hatched from, and upon her singing his mother appears atop the Dolem that had stopped the TERRA Invasion. In the battle Ayato's mother is injured, and Ayato flees Tokyo Jupiter with Haruka.
Eps: 26
Studio: Bones
Genre(s): Action, Drama, Mecha, Music, Mystery, Psychological, Romance, Sci-Fi
Aired: Jan 21, 2002 - Sep 10, 2002
Sub/Dub: Both decent and done well
Similar anime: Neon Genesis Evangelion, Eureka Seven, Soukyuu no Fafner: Dead Aggressor MAL
If you were to take a quick glance at this anime and ask if this was a remake of NGE, you wouldn't be wrong. RahXephon has been considered the spiritual successor to NGE, and retains many similar narrative and philosophical traits. Yet, unlike the latter, RahXephon seems to focus on attaining a specific aesthetic tone rather than psychological or religious undertones. However I will note that for anyone seeking to view this anime, this is one that may not be for everyone as it is a challenge to view as much as NGE was.
The non-linear plot is, by all intentions, vague and many of the initial concepts and unanswered questions you will be forced to hold your tongue until the final episodes. Even then, you may be left in a state of bewilderment, as just like NGE this anime will give you an ambiguity that is frustrating and may force yourself to seek research from outside the 26 episodes. RahXephon does manage to win points however in the remaining aspects. Visually and audibly the anime is a gem, with great style and animation, as well as memorable music that fits its segments. The OP an ED are decent, not necessarily noteworthy but fit within the mood of the anime.
The shining aspect of RahXephon would have to be its characters, it is this point that I think it outdoes NGE on. While we do have a similar male lead, and a large cast to follow, all of them undergo great development throughout the course of the series. The MC is neither the whiny Shinji or some bad ass, and the side characters show great impact on the MC and develop themselves. They feel real, and often are shown to be imperfect themselves trying to come to terms with their existence, and I do think that is a core part of making an anime great.
Overall, this is a complicated anime to follow for the story, and don't expect to understand much as you watch. However, the great cast and a blend of aesthetically appealing visuals & art make it an enjoyable anime. I recommend this to anyone who was an NGE fan or wishes to get a mindfuck but enjoy it at the same time. ;)
Quote:Punpun Onodera is a normal 11-year-old boy living in Japan. Hopelessly idealistic and romantic, Punpun begins to see his life take a subtle—though nonetheless startling—turn to the adult when he meets the new girl in his class, Aiko Tanaka. It is then that the quiet boy learns just how fickle maintaining a relationship can be, and the surmounting difficulties of transitioning from a naïve boyhood to a convoluted adulthood. When his father assaults his mother one night, Punpun realizes another thing: those whom he looked up to were not as impressive as he once thought.
As his problems increase, Punpun's once shy demeanor turns into voluntary reclusiveness. Rather than curing him of his problems and conflicting emotions, this merely intensifies them, sending him down the dark path of maturity in this grim coming-of-age saga.
Chapters: 147
Volumes: 13
Author(s): Inio Asano
Published: Mar 15, 2007 - Nov 2, 2013
Genre(s): Drama, Slice of Life, Psychological, Seinen MAL
Despite the looks of the manga, this is one that follows the cardinal rule of "don't judge a book by its cover." Punpun is a psychological tale detailing the coming-of-age of a young boy from elementary school era till his 20s. It should be noted that this is a depressingly realistic; this is not a happy story. Yet despite this, it does a wonderful job of depicting the lives of the characters as they age, face real problems and how complicated it may be for humans to have to come to terms with those problems. I do recommend this for anyone looking for a mature and psychological anime.
Youkoso Jitsuryoku Shijou Shugi no Kyoushitsu e
{Synopsis}
Koudo Ikusei Senior High School is a leading prestigious school with state-of-the-art facilities where nearly 100% of students go on to university or find employment. The students there have the freedom to wear any hairstyle and bring any personal effects they desire. Koudo Ikusei is a paradise-like school, but the truth is that only the most superior of students receive favorable treatment.
Ayanokouji Kiyotaka is a student of D-class, which is where the school dumps its "inferior" students in order to ridicule them. For a certain reason, Kiyotaka was careless on his entrance examination, and was put in D-class. After meeting Horikita Suzune and Kushida Kikyou, two other students in his class, Kiyotaka's situation begins to change.
{Personal Opinion}
Youkoso Jitsuryoku Shijou Shugi no Kyoushitsu e is a pretty good anime that certainly left it's mark, but then again I only review anime that I find worthwhile :3. The animation style was good also, there's not much to complain about. The story shows us different stereotypes of high school students well, and also portrayed the clear struggle between all classes.
{The Story}
As shown in the synopsis, Youkoso Jitsuryoku Shijou Shugi no Kyoushitsu e tells us of the story of Ayanokouji, a student in the Koudo Ikusei High School, a school that' is notoriously known for having a near 100% employment rate, and is extremely well funded. He seldomly displayed his ability to do things perfectly, and even when he does he attributed his work to other people, namely Horikita and Kushida. The class struggle (pun intended, am a proud man holding my sickle and hammer) intensifies with every episode, from the small fight in the first episodes to the report to the student council, and then the espionage that happened during the special examination.
{The Characters}
Horikita and Ayanokouji are both lovable characters, each with their own personalities. Horikita is quiet and reserved, but also very intelligent and ambitious at the same time. Her desire to "please" her brother and her weak side makes her especially adorable and a 9/10 waifu material. Ayanokouji is also not that socialable, however he's able to become friends with Horikita despite no others being able to do so. The last episode revealed Ayanokouji's motives and philosophy of Objectivism, along with how he is manipulating others to reach his goal. If it wasn't for his hair I would give him a 8/10 rating but since I dislike his hairstyle and look I'll give him a 6/10 only.
{Soundtrack}
Good soundtrack, however not especially impressive.
{Overall}
Although the anime is not too unique, it's lovable characters, intense plot and cliffhangers can keep one attached for a long time. I would recommend this anime to anyone looking for a high school drama anime, however not for someone who's looking for intense romance because the romance aspect of this anime is lacking.

Anime OP of the Week
This week's OP of the Week is paying homage to one of the shows that introduced me to anime over 10 years ago. Naruto's OP 9 song "YURA YURA" by Hearts Grow.
Anime ED of the Week
This week's ED, to me, is one of the best ED to come out in the last few years. The visuals along with the song of Shinsekai Yori's Ending 2 is some of the best work I have ever seen in a ending. Interestingly, Shinsekai Yori doesn't have OP; only a ED.
Honorary Mention
When I first got into anime, one thing I found out that I liked was Japanese rock. MY FIRST STORY was the first one that I found that I really liked a long time ago. Here is their song "LET IT DIE" off their new album.
Thank you all once again for reading, have a great week and see you for the next issue! And as always, if you have any suggestions or ideas feel free to comment them, you will be credited if we accept them!
