Just about everyone has heard of Japan's beautiful cherry blossoms or abundant rice, but have you ever heard of mochi?
Technically, mochi is still just rice. Specifically, it is a rice-cake made from mochigome, and is treated almost as a delicacy, being a traditional food for the Japanese New Year.
Mochigome is a short-grain rice, and can be distinguished by its short, round and opaque grains that get more sticky when cooked. It will also create the firmer but chewier texture Mochi is known for.

Now-a-days, mochi is a staple of Japanese culture, and can be found in various different forms throughout the year.
Here are a few of the most popular ways to eat mochi:

Zōni (雑煮)

[Image: XSbYqWo.jpg]

Zoni is a Japanese soup containing mochi rice cakes of course.
The dish is associated with the Japanese New Year and is a ceremonial food, often considered the most auspicious of the dishes eaten on New Years Day.
Most families and regions have their own variation.

Dango (団子)

[Image: h5d21nT.jpg]

Dango is a Japanese dumpling and made from mochiko (rice flour), and is related to mochi.
The sweet is often served with green tea and is eaten year-round, but different varieties can be found in given seasons.
Dango are often served on a skewer, as seen above.

Warabimochi (蕨餅)

[Image: q1mKhe1.jpg]

Warabi mochi is a jelly-like confection made from bracken starch and dipped in kinako, a sweet toasted soybean flour. It differs from true mochi, which is made with glutinous rice.
Warabi mochi is most popular during the summertime, especially in the Kansai region and Okinawa. It is often sold from trucks, similar to an ice cream truck in Western countries.

Daifuku (大福)

[Image: XLbr1St.jpg]

Daifuku is another Japanese confection, consisting of a small round mochi (rice cake) stuffed with sweet filling.
It is most commonly filled with anko, which is a sweetened red bean paste made from azuki beans.
Ichigo Daifuku (いちご大福) is one of the most popular forms, and is the same thing, simply with a strawberry as the filling.

Mochi Ice Cream (餅アイスクリーム)

[Image: 3Qtj7HI.jpg]

Last but not least, is mochi ice cream. This treat is made up of pounded sticky rice, with an ice cream filling.
It is usually in the shape of small, round balls, and the ice cream includes traditional flavors such as vanilla, chocolate, and strawberry.
Mochi ice cream can be found in most convenience stores, but only during the spring season.
It is also commonly known as Yukimidaifuku (雪見だいふく) as shown on the packaging.

Shinreigari: Ghost Hound

[Image: DTRacj9.jpg]

Synopsis (Courtesy of MAL):
Quote:In an isolated region of Kyushu lies the town of Suiten. Though seeming small and modest, Suiten is not a picturesque place for a vacation, unless it is from the "Unseen World." Taro, Makoto, and Masayuki, three boys with traumatic pasts, learn to let their souls cross between the two parallel worlds. However, the Unseen World is no mere copy of the real Apparent World. The Unseen World is the home of ghosts, but changes are now allowing the souls of the dead to pass over into the Apparent World, with unpredictable effects. Follow the journey of Taro, Makoto, and Masayuki, as they cross between the two worlds, trying to unravel a great mystery.

Eps: 22
Studio: Production I.G
Genre(s): Mystery, Psychological, Sci-Fi, Supernatural
Aired: Oct 18, 2007 - Apr 4, 2008
Sub/Dub: Both decent and done well
Similar anime: Serial Experiments Lain, Ghost Hunt, Shinseki Yori, Higurashi no Naku Koro ni
MAL

Trauma can induce the most obscure and unrealistic aspects of the imagination, and in doing so reveal truths about ourselves that have been sheltered away by our subconscious fears of attaining them. Ghost Hound leads its audience into a technical and purposely convoluting story in the far remote region of northern Honshu. The anime gestures a dynamic relationship with all of its characters, building the main story arc through the usage of multiple sub-plots coinciding together as well as unleashing a mass array of medical diction unto the viewer (note: you may want to keep a medical dictionary with you in order to further understand some aspects as the anime only gives you the gist of the concepts). The sound and art are done very well, and even though some might find the unemotional gestures often seen by the characters to be boresome, remember that this is the same director as Serial Experiments Lain and that by all means is it intentional for the purpose of exploring the psychological state of mind. Overall for a psychological anime it delivers a sense of deep psychological thriller while maintaining its plot throughout, and I recommend it for anyone seeking a good spooky anime in the future (perhaps a nice Halloween watch). ;)

GTO: Great Teacher Onizuka

[Image: 1zLN9yV.jpg]

Synopsis (Courtesy of MAL):
Quote:22-year-old Eikichi Onizuka: pervert, former gang member... and teacher?

Great Teacher Onizuka follows the incredible, though often ridiculous, antics of the titular teacher as he attempts to outwit and win over the cunning Class 3-4 that is determined to have him removed from the school. However, other obstacles present themselves throughout—including the frustrated, balding vice principal, Hiroshi Uchiyamada; old enemies from his biker days; and his own idiotic teaching methods. But Eikichi fights it all whilst trying to help his students, romance fellow teacher Azusa Fuyutsuki, and earn his self-proclaimed title.

Chapters: 208
Volumes: 25
Author(s): Tohru Fujisawa
Published: Dec 11, 1996 - Jan 30, 2002
Genre(s): Action, Comedy, Drama, Ecchi, School, Shounen
MAL

GTO is among a favorite in the anime/manga community not entirely just for its great amount of comedic material but for the unique concept itself. Young, hot-headed punk teacher vs. high school students seems to be an odd choice for a plot, however it works very well for its audience. The surface maintains its laughable, silly mood yet down to the core GTO does create genuine relationships amongst its characters that drives the story forward. Definitely a great read for anyone looking for comedy and a good plot! ;)

Yamada-kun to 7-nin no Majo

[Image: RZWsEEu.jpg]

{Synopsis}

When Ryuu Yamada entered high school, he wanted to turn over a new leaf and lead a productive school life. That's why he chose to attend Suzaku High, where no one would know of his violent delinquent reputation. However, much to Ryuu's dismay, he is soon bored; now a second year, Ryuu has reverted to his old ways—lazy with abysmal grades and always getting into fights.
One day, back from yet another office visit, Ryuu encounters Urara Shiraishi, a beautiful honors student. A misstep causes them both to tumble down the stairs, ending in an accidental kiss! The pair discover they can switch bodies with a kiss: an ability which will prove to be both convenient and troublesome.
Learning of their new power, Toranosuke Miyamura, a student council officer and the single member of the Supernatural Studies Club, recruits them for the club. Soon joined by Miyabi Itou, an eccentric interested in all things supernatural, the group unearths the legend of the Seven Witches of Suzaku High, seven female students who have obtained different powers activated by a kiss. The Supernatural Studies Club embarks on its first quest: to find the identities of all the witches.

{Personal Opinion}
Light hearted and fun, Yamada-kun to 7 nin majo can lift one's spirit easily. It was a pleasant change from binge watching animes like Akame ga Kill and Kyoukai no Kanata. The plot wasn't too interesting and was somewhat predictable, however there are still many moments of unexpected humour that could bring you a smile.

{The Story}
The anime tells us of Yamada-kun, a delinquent who transferred to a new school in hope of having a fresh start, clean of his delinquent reputation. However, things didn't go too well for him, and he soon returned to his previous delinquent self. One day, while walking down the stairs, he stumbled upon Urara Shiraishi, his opposite, literally. As they stumbled down the stairs, they accidentally kissed and they bodyswitched. As the story develops, they began to learn the mysteries of the 7 witches of the school, and works to find and unite all of them.

{The Characters}
Each of the witches had their own personality. As we explore each of these characters, we eventually sees past their initial appearances and finally sees their differences. The male characters did not stand out much (except for the main protagonist) but the female characters are very well designed in general and shows great plot development.

{Soundtrack}
The OP, Kuchizuke Diamond was great. It portrayed the lightheartedness of the anime perfectly, and Animenz's cover of it is great too. You can check out the cover here.

New Release
This weeks new release isn't exactly Japanese music, but it is making waves through Japan with its release this coming week. KPOP boy band Wanna One is releasing their 1X1=1 Album this week in Japan and Korea. Here is a song off the album titled "에너제틱(Energetic)".

Anime OP of the Week
This week's OP of the Week, from the anime Kiznaiver, has amazing visuals and a interesting song to go along with it. Song called "LAY YOUR HANDS ON ME" by duo BOOM BOOM SATELLITES. Please ignore the quality of the video as Sony and Studio Trigger has made it impossible to have any sort of video up on YouTube.

Anime ED of the Week
The ending theme for this weeks edition is from the anime Kekkai Sensen. Song named "Sugar Song & Bitter Step" from group UNISON SQUARE GARDEN.

Honorary Mention
I think we need to spice something up this week. Honorary Mention this week is "MEGITSUNE" by BABYMETAL.
