Maybe it's a privacy issue to name who's viewing what forum and such. But maybe it could display how many users are viewing each forum/section/thread.

I believe this is already an option.
Click on User CP -> Under "Your Profile" click on "Edit Options" The first checkbox on the page says "Hide me from the Who's Online list." I think it should display at least how many users are viewing a forum, instead of the previous method of displaying who's all viewing it.
