Hello, I don't see a discussion thread on this anime, so I thought I'd create one.
This anime is also known as: Itai no wa Iya nano de Bougyoryoku ni Kyokufuri Shitai to Omoimasu.
Quote:After receiving an invitation from her friend Risa Shiromine, Kaede Honjou begins playing the VRMMO game New World Online as the character Maple. Lacking knowledge of the game, she allocates all her status points to defense. As a result, her movements are slow, she cannot use magic, and even gets attacked by the rabbits. However, she obtains a skill called "Absolute Defense" due to maxing out her vitality points, and a counter skill that kills in a single hit. A "mobile fortress style" novice with a poisonous skill that makes all attacks invalid and overrides all obstacles, she goes off to adventures, disregarding her irregularities.

It's highly recommended to keep your posts in spoilers, but there really is no way to enforce that since this is a discussion thread and anything goes. Don't get upset if you read something and you aren't up-to-date with the current episodes.
Here we have yet again, another isekai VRMMO anime that completely rips-off of Sword Art Online. I hate to compare the majority of isekai VRMMO anime off of Sword Art Online, but since it's the most commonly known it truly is the one that everyone compares these types of anime to. The loading screen of the game and images you see when the characters are booting up the VR system to load the game are very graphically similar to Sword Art Online.
Going to put in spoilers my initial thoughts of the anime!
The anime is nothing special like I said. The characters are bland and there are no real unique traits to any of them. Of course, the main character Maple-chan has extreme defensive abilities, but additionally, she also has very strong offensive abilities despite having 0 points in defense. I'm not up to date with current MMO games, but I think it's a little bit over-powered if a tank class has super offensive abilities, despite having a tremendous amount of health. I probably sound dumb, but regardless, I think it's silly how over-powered she is despite being completely new to the game.
I'm going to give this anime a 7. I do enjoy it slightly, but I can predict that Maple-chan and whatever team she creates are going to be completely unstoppable and every episode is just going to be the same repetitive thing.
Here are my thoughts on the latest episode, episode 4!
As I predicted, the anime really isn't anything special and Maple-chan is still over-powered to the point where everything she faces off ends up losing. I think the next episode is going to be interesting though because they are currently in an area filled with players who seem to be into PvP. As Sally said in the latest episode, the true test of skill isn't against NPC's but against real players, so I really hope they show us something interesting next episode. Also, I do hope to see that they don't just completely obliterate other players like Maple did in the first event. I'd like to see a challenge. If they introduce challenges into the episode, then I think it can get interesting, as I said before I believe in the main post that the action is kind of boring and there's nothing really special going on.
Sally and Maple ended up getting pets! They are pretty cute too and I like how the pets they received are similiar to what their class-types are. I'm curious to see if they'll grow, which I am sure they will because if you watch the ending OP you can see that Syrup (the turtle maple received) is completely huge. So that's another thing to look forward to!
I'm glad its not an isekai and maple is cute. its a fun and cute show that doesnt take iteself seriously and thats a goaod thing
Latest episode was much better than I anticipated. However, I still have complements with the fighting and how both Sally and Maple are over-powered and there hasn't really been anyone that's able to match their level. However, we do meet a new character this episode, Kasumi. We were able to see a little bit of what she's capable, but not too much. I'm hoping in the future, despite Kasumi now being friends with Maple and Sally, that she'll put on a good fight in a friendly duel or possibly the next event if there is one.
Also, the ending was funny and I love how Syrup turned into a huge turtle!
hahaha i never thought of it like this

Maple and Sally form a guild and I think that they'll rise even more to the top of the server. We learn more about the top guilds and the top player Payne, and I'm really curious to see more about him, but I don't think we'll see him until the last few episodes. What do you guys predict will happen? Do you guys think Payne's guild will end up PvPing with Maple's? What do you think the final event is going to be? Well, even though that's something to think about, we should be looking forward to the next events in the anime because they announced a third and fourth one! Now that Maple and Sally have a guild, I'm wondering what the event will be. They also announced that the third level will open up, so I am curious to see what the level is going to look like.
I wouldn't mind seeing more of Maple in the real world. The bits and pieces of her at school was pretty funny. But since the anime is mostly about the VRMMO, I don't think it will happen. Although, in SAO, after they beat the game, we did end up getting to see a little bit of their real life. However, for this anime I think it's okay if they decide to not do it again, even for a little.
I'm happy that Kuromu and Iz joined the guild I am surprised that Kuromu wasn't already in one considering you learn about his party at the beginning of the episode. I wonder if his friends will join too. Iz I was also surprised to see her join but I think it's awesome she did because the guild can get some awesome discounts from her crafting. I wonder if the business she's running will also go towards the guild or she'll keep most of the funds to herself.
What I liked the most about this episode is how the characters have to grind for loot and get material to craft items. Where as in SAO they just beat a boss or a mob and they automatically get a crafted item. That wasn't 100% the case, but you get my point. I enjoy the emphasis they have on this anime where the characters are seen working hard to get these materials for their item crafting.
Lastly, we get to finally learn more about Yui and May. I like their color scheme and hair designs and I'm curious to see how they'll do in the guild. We get to see their extreme strength at the end of the episode so I'm really curious to see how they'll do against mobs. In the end though, I predict that Maple's guild will rise to the top. Pretty much no competition still in this anime which is why I want to see if Payne will be the factor that changes everything.
EDIT: I forgot to say I love that they named the guild "Maple Tree" and it's perfect that they have a tree as their guild house. I'm excited what else is to come considering they have 50 member slots. That means, whoever joins the guild will probably be a new side character we'll see often which is why I'm curious who else will join.
Here are some random screenshots, resized of course, because why not.

Very good and funny episode. At first, I thought it was going to be the same old different day type stuff but it wasn't and I am glad. Everyone got to shine a little in this episode, even if it wasn't much. In the opening of the anime, you only see Kasumi, Maple, Sally, Iz, Yui, May, Kanade, and Kuromu so I don't think anyone else is going to be joining the guild anytime soon, despite having a lot of slots open in their guild, Maple Tree.
I would like to see more out of Yui, Kasumi, Iz, May, and Kanade. I suppose the next episode we will be able to since it was hinted that the next event is coming up. What I mean is, the opening of the anime has them in full gear. I'd like to see them in that. They are probably my favorite out of the supporting characters, despite being very bland. They are sisters I believe, and it's not uncommon for anime to have them twinning so much.
Kuromu got some awesome armor and he looks like a bad*ss now.
The segment where Maple was helping the mom and the daughter on that chained quest was hilarious. I couldn't help but laugh throughout it. Maple's new armor looks so awesome and the white pops, I love it. The skill she got is over-powered and I'm curious to see if she'll use it in the next two events.
The last few episodes are going to be good I can tell. We are unsure of what the next event is, but we know that Payne's guild is going to be monitoring Maple Tree. With that being said, I don't think they'll do anything rash. They'll do exactly that and monitor them from afar to see what they are truly capable of together. The fourth event is going to be the real hook of this show. I've been waiting for someone of equal level to fight Maple and we'll most likely see that considering Payne is supposedly better or at the same level of Maple. We'll see how next episode goes next Wednesday!
If you take the time to read my reviews for every episode, you'll know that my responses are either bashing the episode, complimenting the episode, or both. This review will mostly be bashing the episode.
This anime is entertaining at times and there is a little bit of comedy every so often which is good. When it comes down to it at the end of the day, it's an anime about a VRMMO. So, you'll want to get the best out of that. Sadly, this anime just lacks in certain aspects.
This is going to sound a bit weird so let me word it the best I can. The characters are very boring. None of them stand out as much as the main character Maple, who is overpowered to the point where if you were playing an actual MMO, it wouldn't even be enjoyable. I'm not even sure how she finds it enjoyable herself. Imagine being able to 1-hit everything or tank over a million hits in an MMO. It wouldn't be very fun, would it? Of course, your friends and team will like it and support you because you are benefiting them. Maybe that will keep you motivated, however, to me, that's very boring.
Continuing, three main guilds are very strong. Maple's guild is one of them, then you have Flame Emperors and the Order of the Holy Sword. These three guilds are the strongest in the game. All the big members throughout the guilds have reached the top 100 in the events we've seen in the anime. There is no competition. This whole episode was those three guilds obliterating the no-name guilds with generic characters. Of course, the big battle and probably the last few episodes will be the three guilds fighting it out. I'm sure that will be interesting and we'll get some action, but until then don't expect anything fancy.
I will say, Kasumi is my favorite character. Although, as I said before, all characters are bland, she is still my favorite. I say this because even though she's nothing special, she thinks the way I do when I used to play MMO's and also I like her VA which I've heard in other anime.
The skills in the MMO are insane I'll give you that. What I mean is, you'll never see something like that in MMO's today. Maybe in the future. But all these moves the big guilds are using are not necessarily cool, but they for sure kick butt. As I said before, the top three prevail against the generic characters.
Lastly, let me just complain about Maple once again. As much as I think she's great when it comes to the comedic approach the writers give her, she's just too much. She has so many abilities, so much armor to choose from, you can't keep up. It's just unfair. The thing is, she didn't even do anything that hard to get it. Of course, that's plot armor, or well just the directors giving her good stuff because she's the main character, but I'd like to see more effort put into how she got it.
Imagine being able to shield your team for an eternity, and all you did was use a flying turtle to receive holy water. You see what I mean? I guess the last fight between the mecha was something, but it just wasn't enough to satisfy me. Comparing this to let's say, Log Horizon, I enjoy how in that anime they work for the stuff they need. I am very excited for the next season! But we'll save that discussion for when the anime airs. 🙂
I was going to write a huge list of complaints, but I've decided not to take this anime as seriously as I have, as I know at this point there is no stopping what is to come.
Maple's guild is once again proven undefeatable in this episode. Everything they do and all the players in the guild have skills far beyond anyone else in the game. And because of that, this anime is very boring.
As I mentioned in past posts, I expect a little competition between everyone. There has been zero competition and this episode proves that. How many times did Maple save her teammates? How many times did Maple do something unexpected to the enemy? Exactly. I'm sure you've counted over 10 times in this episode and over 100 in the past 10 episodes alone. I'll keep complaining and complaining about how overpowered Maple is, so I've decided to just stop.
I'll leave it at that as that's my biggest complaint and overall feedback for the episode. Two things before I finish though.
Interestingly, Sally became tired in the game. I've never seen anyone in the game grow tired because of their actions. And I don't believe the actions they do in the game affect how they are in real life. So why is she so tired? Last I checked, unlike VR that we have of today, you lay down when entering the VR in the anime. So why would she be tired?
Lastly, the next episode will hopefully be interesting. It's Maple vs. the second-best guild in the event so I'm hoping that something happens and Maple doesn't carry like she always does.
A fairly boring episode once again. The only interesting bits were at the end of the episode. Maple's fight against the Flame Emperors was super boring. Ah. I guess I still shouldn't take this anime too seriously.
The last episode will air next week and I think it will finally kick-off. Sad it takes this long for an interesting fight to happen. I think it will be a tough fight between Holy Sword (Holy Cross? -- I don't remember the name of the guild).
Payne was able to make it through Maple's defense and be one of the first few to cause damage to her. I hope she dies at least once. It's so annoying how much plot armor Maple has.
I did like how all the people in similar classes are fighting each other.
Well, we finally meet the end of this somewhat popular anime. I am going to give this anime a 7/10.
Sadly, I wanted to see more out of this anime and I didn't get as much satisfaction as I wanted. I felt it had the potential to grow. The first episode was magnificent. Maple was pure and cute, never touching a VRMMO. Soon after that, she started to get stronger and stronger and that's where I felt the anime started to sway away from my interest. I'd say the first three episodes were fantastic.
We had a journey with maple. She leveled up, she made new friends, and she learned awesome abilities that well, completely annihilated her opponents and practically gave her plot armor.
Once Maple started to obtain said plot armor, you could easily tell no one could stop her. The fights started to get boring, the quests became easy, and she earned more and more skills to increase this plot armor.
The characters were not really interesting at all. Of course, Maple stood out the most out of everyone with her flashy armor and special abilities. Compared to everyone else though, they were plain and boring. I did like Kasumi, mostly due to liking her voice actress Saori Hayami, but even she wasn't too much of an interesting character.
The final battle between Payne's guild and Maple Tree ended in what you'd expect, Maple clutching the battle and winning it for Maple Tree. The guild ended up in third place, which is not bad, but you should have expected them to be in the top three.
It looks like Maple Tree created an alliance with Payne and Mii's guild. Of course, with them working together now it goes to show that they will be unstoppable and there's really nothing else to say about that. There were a few hints about a second season from different dialogues from the characters and even at the end with the NWO text chat one of the players said there is the fifth event soon, so there might actually be a second season, but I really hope not. What more could they possibly add to drag onto this story? They've practically given Maple everything they could, what more can they give her to be the most overpowered character in the game?
Regardless of that, I really like how Maple was able to bring these two guilds in as an alliance. It shows great character progression. She was able to form an alliance with the top two guilds. That really takes a lot of leadership skills. Of course, she got them to become friends due to her kicking their butts and being overpowered, but still.
Out of the VRMMO's this season, this is definitely the best one. Out of Infinite Dendrogram and Darwin's Game (I'm going to include this even though it's not a VRMMO) this anime really caught the interest of the viewers. Would I recommend watching this? Eh, I'd say give it a shot. Personally, I am truly excited about Log Horizon's third season and I know that's going to blow my mind.
Okay, it's been confirmed there will be a second season.

Also, here's a cute picture of maple!
