Hi yall,
Planning on learning C over the Christmas break and through the spring. What would be some interesting beginner project ideas?
Ideally, something interesting or functional would be cool
Thanks!
Hello, have fun with your learning:
- Writing a shell (like bash or tcsh)
- Writing a FTP Server/Client
- Graphic Programming (3D/2D games)
- Re-writing objdump (good way to learn ELF structure)
A fairly simple project is to try and make a simple IRC bot. This will teach you some basic networking, program structuring and text parsing which are all highly beneficial.

Man I been learning c++ for about a month now and this seems extremely difficult for me is this really considered fairly simple?

Yeah i was just thinking that. Gonna save the idea but theres no way i can do that as one of the first projects though right?
Ok I thought you meant more as a longer term project. If you want something easier and functional you can try making some kind of basic text editor processor eg. open a file and remove the last 2 characters of every single line, convert to lower case etc.
Thats a bit easier and will teach you the basics of opening/writing files and text manipulation

Most important thing is to not give up. Learning C++ from scratch is certainly not a walk in the park. PM me if you'd like some helpful resources such as guides and stuff. I've maintained a private server gaming project that required years and years of C++ development and testing before even allowing it to be accessed for beta testing.
Take your time, you cannot force the language. Sorry for laughing but that reply made me laugh to the point of crying for some reason, lol.

You could try recreating a basic version for one of your favorite games in C++. I recently coded up a basic version of Subnautica in C++ and it was an absolute blast to make.
For OP, I found making 2D games pretty helpful to learn most of the basics or coding stuff that calculates my GPA or calculating how close I am to being broke.
Maybe try making a simple Tic-Tac-Toe game in C and then add features like loading in an existing game, exporting your current game, and maybe checking if that game finished or not.
