Taking profits

Don't forget to take profits. So many people do not and don't take advantage of swings in the price to sell and buy back in later.

What I do is hold a % as "long term / never sell" and I don't touch it. Separately I have a trading fund which I usually manage on a weekly or monthly, or quarterly basis. I do a mix of lump sum buys & DCA. However, I always keep minimums in my buys - basically regardless of the current price. I will only sell the minimum (original usually) investments at extreme profits, which we are not close to currently in this bull run.

What this means is that let's say I bought XRP at $0.50 (true)
and then I ride it up (true)
Perhaps I think it will crash (true)
Even if I predicted a correction, I still didn't sell all.

In this scenario, which unfolded over the last week:
- I sold a bunch of XRP to take profit
- I still held a good amount regardless, because long-term I think XRP is cheap as hell right now.

i always keep a minimum amount in each pick,
but I am not scared to take profit and book a win.

What's your TP strat in a bull market, and what is your accumulation strat in a bear or crab period?
1. Bitcoin - No more taking profits, we wait.
2. Sui - I have pretty steady SUI inflows, I sell small amounts during highs and keep the funds in stables on Sui. Over the past week I've been earning where between 50%-80% APY on holding stables on Sui. Overall the bulk of my SUI is being held long term though.
3. Aleph Zero - Road it to the top and back to the bottom. Took enough profits along the way to recoup my initial investment while still maintaining over half of my holdings, now I'm sitting on a bag waiting for the next spike in price to exit entirely. We hit $0.60 last week and that would have been my exit, however I was staked and locked for 14 days. RIP.
4. Cardano - Took profits at specific milestones due to my low entry price. Took profits at 75x, 100x, and 150x my entry price. Road a small bag back down to the bottom that I sold 2 weeks ago.
5. Supra - Vesting for now, will likely sell most or all of my Supra upon unlock, returns have already been good enough.

Don't think I have significant holdings anywhere else right now.

To much potential for BTC with Trump, Elon, and everything else right now to sell any.
No telling if we will stay around 95-100k or Jump to 150k by inauguration day. Exciting times.

Yeah my prediction has always been around 380-430K or so for a top if it can repeat past patterns.
But my short-term prediction is a high of 112K with a correction that could be as low as 70K. Hell, I even have a model with a low at 40-60K range, but I don't think we'll see it in this run.

All in all I think what you said about 150 isn't too unreasonable.
I think in my head I plotted out 120-140K as a good pump range if we break the 110-115K. I don't have the TA handy but I came to 112 based on some long-term trends in the past. Will be interesting to see where we land. We obviously blew past it, but I didn't have us having a 'stable' 90K holding price until around Feb 1, so I'm obviously happy as-is but waiting to see more.

As far as the general take profit strategy:
I think it depends what you're doing.

In my case I went ham on lump sums over the last month or two - more so than I was comfortable holding and enough to outdo my more routine DCA amounts collectively over time in many cases.
So I took profit to benefit from the recent pumps without staying at risk. I had stop losses to avoid any sort of major issue, but I was overly into crypto compared to stocks and felt like the last few months were a good time to exit on some positions.

I think I made some good decisions. For example a good few weeks ago I took out a bit and dumped it into RGTI & QBTS (Shoutout to sittingduck on dwave!!! ) and basically doubled on one and more than tripled on the other. So when I say take profits, I don't mean it should not be re-invested. Sometimes taking profits means exiting 1 token and entering a stock - or exiting a stock and going into a token - or just taking cash and holding it until there's a good entry point.
One thing is for sure: this money is for investing, not for spending. When I take profits, it's usually for future buys or to invest in another, not for random things that don't last forever.

That said:
- every recco I've made on HF, TG, etc are all valid. I still hold all of the cryptos I've mentioned to people, and a good base amount of each.
Not me, I prefer to wait till my wonderful alt holdings go to near zero before selling. I don't want to break my pattern of buy high, sell low.

Four years ago I had $300k in alts that ended up being sold for less than 10% of that. No reason to think my luck (or intelligence) has changed since then. Thankfully have just enough Bitcoin aside for my future, which I refuse to touch till BTC $300k, then selling just enough to pay off debt.

Profit taking is important but so hard. You get FOMO hard when you're up to 6-figures and you think maybe you can go even higher. Greed sucks.

I think this type of investing is a game of greed. Unfortunately, the most greedy will lose. Probably not on Bitcoin but in alts. I struggle to pull anything out due to FOMO. I was very close to pulling out of XRP a week ago when it peaked this season, it's now dropped about 20%.

I'm not 6 figures because I'm a brokie that spends his money on toys (car). But the little bit of money that I've got in there a can't bring myself to pull out.

Wait we're supposed to take profits?

Not for real though I struggle with that. I know I should take profits but as mentioned above that FOMO kicks in and then I hold to long. I watch it go down and tell myself, "oh it will go back up just keep holding" and either ride down the loss or get stuck holding a bag

this is why I monitor the fear & greed index.
At times of extreme greed - consider selling.
At times of extreme fear - consider buying.
It's my first time investing, DCA-ing since February. Goal is to sell all somewhere in spring and buy a car. Most of my holdings are in BTC, but I have some XMR, SOL and ADA. I will swap those out for BTC soon.

I loved this journey although I'm a newbie in the crypto world. I will take profits and fulfill my goal and then I will continue to DCA and HODL for at least 4 years. We'll see.
