Question About Recent Warning Policy

Question About Recent Warning Policy

Hey everyone,

Lately, several of us have noticed that members are receiving warnings for not using capital letters or proper punctuation in our posts.
I wanted to open a discussion about this because, honestly, many of us are confused about why this rule is suddenly being enforced so strictly.

To clarify:
We completely understand keeping the forum organized and readable, but it feels a bit unnecessary to receive warnings for something as small as forgetting a capital letter or a comma. This is a community forum, not a school classroom, most of us are here to relax, connect, and share interests, not to worry about grammar or punctuation.

Our main questions are:
  • Why is this rule being enforced now, when it wasn’t before?

  • Was there an announcement or reason given for the change?

  • Is this something that can be discussed or adjusted by staff?

Personally, I believe people should be free to write comfortably, as long as their messages are respectful and understandable. We all communicate differently, and enforcing such a small detail might discourage members from participating.

No disrespect intended — we just want to understand the reasoning behind this decision and whether there’s room for a more relaxed approach.

Thanks for taking the time to read this.
Looking forward to hearing what staff or other members think about it.
When did that happened? Never heard about this particular rule being enforced and warned upon for breaking it.

I could understand warning being sent to certain users — mostly new, who make a spaghetti spam post with no proper end sentences, dots or paragraphs. But I haven't seen you post stuff of that kind.
When it comes to issuing warnings, it is at the staff's discretion if they consider it a warning or not. As taken from the Help Docs:

Quote:Posting Etiquette of Hack Forums
1. Post in the correct category.
2. Use good grammar. Basically, start sentences with a capital and end it with punctuation.
3. Don't double post. That's when you post one after another instead of editing your existing first post.
4. Don't cross post. That's when you repeat a post in multiple threads or categories. Also, it applies if you post a thread with the same or similar content multiple times across forums or in a single forum.
5. Don't post leaked content. Leaking is when information is taken from one place and posted somewhere else without giving any credit.
6. Create relevant subjects for threads. Shit like "OMG" for a subject is immature and asinine.
7. When posting content from another site, credit the site; use quotes and link to the original content (unless it is a competing forum, in which case you shouldn’t be posting the content).

Rules and Etiquette

Typically we just want posts on the site to be engaging, coherent, and legible for other members to understand so they can respond to. As long as the posts aren't spam and don't fall as a violation under the posting etiquette rules, you should be fine.
Staff will never reach out to you off-site. We only communicate on HF.
I’ve been trying to do better lately 😅

I've never been warned for it, but I do think it's a good thing honestly. I think there's also a pretty telling quality to someone who is actually trying to write, and those that write like ignorant, greasy, baboons. I think it's pretty clear which is which honestly.

"I am not native speaker please just try help me"
VS
"i want 2 lern how to hack de insagram pls help me lern dat rn 4 free pls i have no compewtor"

Having the kind of post like example 2 removed would do a good blow to the amount of new posts, but I'd rather the new posts be engaging and actually worth a damn. Number 2 is just recklessly throwing spaghetti at the wall, won't read forum etiquette, will probably be the first forum post they've ever made period since forums are dying anyway, etc.

Enforcing a "standard of written communication" is going to be weird. Are we going to have ChatGPT analyze everything? Should we start speaking/writing like we're Kaylons? I think there's not much you can do to enforce such thing.

Alright, but let’s be honest here...
This is starting to get out of hand.

showing how many warnings have been issued today alone, and most of them are for something as small as not using proper capitalization or punctuation.

I don’t know what The Pact is trying to achieve with this sudden wave of warnings, but it’s definitely not creating a positive atmosphere on HackForums. People are feeling discouraged from posting at all, afraid they’ll get flagged for minor formatting issues.

This doesn’t build community spirit, it kills it.
Members should feel comfortable expressing themselves, not like they’re being graded on grammar. We’re here to engage, share, and connect, not to write essays.

If the goal is to improve post quality, there are better ways to encourage that, guidance, examples, or pinned threads explaining expectations.
Right now, it just feels like moderation is being applied inconsistently and unfairly.

We’re not asking for chaos or rule-breaking, just a bit of common sense and fairness.
Warnings for missing a capital letter or a period are excessive and unnecessary. I really hope staff can take a step back and rethink how this is being handled, because it’s doing more harm than good for the community’s reputation.

I hope that Omniscient can look into this.. But its not good how its goin right now..

I knew I started started noticing some users posts receiving warnings and I was wondering why but now I understand. I honestly don't mind because I can't help but to use proper grammar and punctuation and I don't see why others can't either but IMHO I do think it's a bit harsh or unnecessary but whatever Omni and the stuff choose to do is fine with me!

I’ve been getting the same warnings. It feels a bit unnecessary since everyone can still understand the posts. Hopefully they’ll relax the rule a little.

That's a very long last sentence. I suggest the following:

"I don’t mind. I naturally use proper grammar and punctuation, and I don’t see why others can’t. It might be a bit harsh or unnecessary, but whatever Omni and the staff decide is fine with me."

or

"I honestly don't mind — I just can’t help using proper grammar and punctuation. I don’t see why others can’t either, but IMHO it’s a bit harsh or unnecessary. Still, whatever Omni and the staff choose to do is fine with me."

BTW,

Just to clarify a few things:
No one has ever received a warning for a missing comma or just forgetting a period.

And no one should have felt "discouraged from posting out of fear they'd be flagged for small formatting issues." I explained in PM to each person that the warning was only given when posts repeatedly had neither capital letters nor punctuation. I made sure to reference the Help Documents when I explained it.

No one was warned for obscure grammar mistakes either.

I just wanted to clear up the misunderstanding that people were being flagged for random grammar issues. That wasn’t the case. It was specifically about consistently skipping both capitals and punctuation, and I explained that to each person in PM.

Personally, I do think that when posts, especially titles, don’t use capital letters, it can make the board look less polished.

That said, I’m new to the staff team, and I also happen to be an English teacher. Since other staff members approach this rule less strictly, it won’t be continuing in the same way from me.
I am certain it has something to do with Octoberfest, so many people just spew out of a few words and count that as a reply.
This is absolutely atrocious behaviour from a staff member. The fact you're allowed to say the N word is fine but you're not allowed to use a non-capital letter in your thread title is absolutely hilarious. This is what HF is now?
