Automated Byte Rewards Based on Google Search Performance
The Idea
What if bytes were automatically awarded to members whose threads actually bring new users to the site through Google search? No staff bias, no favoritism, no arguments about what counts as "quality" - the data decides.
Why This Matters
Every thread that ranks in Google and gets clicked is doing free marketing for HF. Someone searches for a topic, finds a thread here, registers to see more or participate. That's the growth funnel. Members who create content that ranks are literally generating value for the site.
Right now that goes unrewarded, or it's rewarded inconsistently through manual staff decisions. This would automate it and align member incentives with site growth.
How It Would Work
Google Search Console has an API that lets you pull performance data programmatically - which URLs are getting impressions and clicks from search. The system would:
Example thresholds:
What This Incentivizes
Good for members:
Good for the site:
Technical Feasibility
Not that complex to implement:
The matching logic (URL → thread ID → author UID) is straightforward since thread URLs contain the TID, and the database already links threads to authors.
Addressing Potential Concerns
How? By creating content that Google ranks highly and drives traffic? That's... the goal. You can't fake clicks in GSC.
Start simple - reward the OP since they created the thread. Could expand later to reward top replies if a reply's anchor gets direct traffic.
Could implement a blacklist filter on the query data, or just let it ride since traffic is traffic.
The whole point is this runs automatically. Initial setup, then it just works.
Summary
We already have the data in GSC showing which threads perform in search. We already have a bytes economy. Connecting them creates an automated reward system that incentivizes exactly the behavior that grows the site - members creating content valuable enough that Google ranks it and new users click through.
Objective rewards. Aligned incentives. Automated execution.

How It Would Work
Google Search Console has an API that lets you pull performance data programmatically - which URLs are getting impressions and clicks from search. The system would:
- Pull click data weekly for all indexed threads
- Match URLs to thread IDs and author UIDs
- Apply a threshold system for rewards
- Auto-distribute bytes, post a leaderboard
Example thresholds:
- 50 clicks/week = 500 bytes
- 100 clicks/week = 1,000 bytes
- 250 clicks/week = 2,500 bytes
- 500+ clicks/week = 5,000 bytes + featured recognition
What This Incentivizes
Good for members:
- Get rewarded for effort without relying on staff noticing
- Clear, objective criteria - no politics
- Leaderboard creates healthy competition
Good for the site:
- Members write detailed, searchable content instead of low-effort posts
- More threads ranking = more organic traffic = more registrations
- Self-moderating quality signal - Google doesn't rank garbage
- Rewards content that brings NEW users, not just engagement from existing members
Technical Feasibility
Not that complex to implement:
- GSC API is free and well-documented
- Simple cron job pulls data weekly
- Small database table tracks thread performance and payouts
- MyBB plugin hooks into the bytes system for distribution
- Optional: Stanley Convo bot announces top performers / posts weekly
The matching logic (URL → thread ID → author UID) is straightforward since thread URLs contain the TID, and the database already links threads to authors.
