Thread Subscriptions Deleted
Many users were using the site's thread subscription service to keep up with threads and to get via e-mail when someone posted on them. However, Omniscient noticed that some users were abusing the feature and were subscribed to thousands of threads. The users were banned (who's names are mentioned in User News) and the subscriptions were emptied. The feature will still be around but you will have to resubscribe to the threads you wanted to keep up with, just make sure to not abuse it so we don't lose the feature forever. >>Source
Night Fury:Welcome to Edition 362 of HF News, Ka$h. Let's get right into the interview.
Congratulations on just passing your one-year anniversary of registration to HF. You are a very new member, but you already seem to be doing well within the community. What brought you to HF last year? ka$h: Well, I had known about Hack Forums a long time ago, I signed up maybe in 2009-10ish? but I was a lurker and didn't visit much, eventually my account was banned for inactivity or something, but yea I never really interacted with anybody on any forum. One day around a year ago I just felt like joining a forum, where I could help people out, learn some new things and also have something to occupy my time if I ever I get bored. Here I am 1 year later.
Night Fury: That's great you decided to give HF a try again. Have you seen a lot of change in the site between 2009 and 2017? ka$h: Without a doubt, this has probably been echoed a million times but HF was a bit more true to its name those years ago and has altered direction over the past few years. However, there is nothing wrong with that, decisions need to be made as to what is acceptable and what isn't to prolong the success of the website.
Night Fury: Did that change in direction make the site more appealing to you? What made you finally start to become an active member of the community? ka$h: To be honest, no. I would prefer HF to be the way it was rather than the way it is now. I still remember the day I signed up again with the intent of being an active member and my thought process was literally "fuck it why not". I think it was just a matter of time, I spend enough time on my PC so I should probably have some places where I can visit, and be a part of a community.
Night Fury: Thanks for the honesty. Although I wasn't around during that time, it sounds like it was much different. The site has apparently altered its original course, but things are bound to change over time. It's nice that regardless of the site's current trajectory, you have still remained a member of the community. Which sections in particular do you currently enjoy on HF?
Furthermore, what should members know about the user Ka$h? Who is Ka$h? ka$h: I would have to say the tech section is the best, majority of members are just people who are willing to help out others, and it has probably the least amount of shit threads compared to others. That is probably the only section I want to mention. :P
Uhh, I don't want to sound cringey here, but I'm just a person who likes IT, particularly IS. I came here to help out when I can, and learn more from the members on this website who know things I don't.
Night Fury: That's commendable that you're applying your time on HF towards learning when there are so many distractions the forum offers. Would you say you've learned a lot this year? ka$h: Uh from HF? I've definitely learnt something, but not a lot, but that also comes down to me and my willingness to look for what I want to learn and start reading, which I haven't particularly had the time to do. Without a doubt though HF does have some very excellent informational threads in most areas.
Night Fury: Given your talent in the area of tech, it's good to know that the forum is still able to cater to people of high skill levels. Regarding your talents, you're somewhat known within the community as being a blackhat hacker. Is there any truth to that? ka$h: I'm not that great, and I don't consider myself to be. As for being a blackhat hacker, maybe a few years ago I would of answered yes, but no.
Night Fury: Your humility is appreciated. Again, thanks for answering truthfully.
Let's move onto another aspect of the site: groups. How do you feel about the current state of groups on the forum?
Also, do you believe that the state of groups has an impact on the site at large? ka$h: Quite evidently, it's obvious that groups are aren't what they were even a year ago, the past month has honestly been a mess with owners just buying and selling, at the end of they day I guess I don't really care because they can do what they want, but the main reason I care at all and probably everyone cares (onto your last point) is because groups are an interesting part of the site which I think a good portion of people do enjoy, a lot of people have given up on groups and I have only seen it getting worse since I got here. Who is to blame for that in my opinion? mainly the people who buy a group and act like they are going to create a business out of it, then sell it 2 days later when they realise HF is not a job, it is a forum.
Night Fury: Certainly the site would benefit from some stability. Do you believe that users are capable of exercising some restraint in buying and selling on their own, or do you believe that rules regarding frequent group trading should be implemented at the administrative level? ka$h: By the looks of it, maybe a rule would be beneficial. Perhaps a rule which instates that you have to own a group for x amount of time if you decide to purchase will cause people to really think twice before they purchase, but then again what do I know.
Night Fury: Such a rule would surely open up the forum to some interesting discussion. Given the impact of groups on the site, it's important that ways of improving the group scene are considered.
On a more personal level, how would you describe your experience as a member of multiple groups? ka$h: I consider that I have only truly been a part of four groups: Notorious, Dawn, Equilibrium, Legends. Based on that, all of these groups were/are great, from the members to the owners, no egotistical owners who thought they were above their members, no ridiculous requirements, and best of all no thread marking the group being sold within a week. Most of all though, the groups were just fun to be a part of. Having an extra part of the forum to access where you can chill with a smaller sized community of people is always cool.
Night Fury: It's nice to hear that your own experience has been a good one. It's hard to ever know for certain what you'll find in a group, but it's encouraging to know that you've been so lucky in your group memberships.
Ka$h, where do you see your future in both the site and the group scene? ka$h: Hmm, to be honest, I see myself the exact way I am right now, not overly active but around. As for groups, I also see myself as being only a part of Dawn and Equilibrium, unless I get kicked :D
Night Fury: That sounds like a very level-headed view of the future. With the great progress you've made in only a year's time, your anticipated future sounds very achievable.
With that response, that will wrap up this interview. Before we conclude, would you like to make any shoutouts? ka$h: nah
Night Fury: Very well. Thanks for joining me for this week's edition of HF News.

Poliovirus is Sticking it to Cancer
New research from Duke University in Durham, NC, could be very promising to those with cancer. The research, recently published in journal Science Translational Medicine, delves into how a slightly modified strain of the poliovirus is able to be used to trick the body into successfully combating cancer. The cancer-fighting strain of the virus was given the name recombinant oncolytic poliovirus, or PVS-RIPO for short. The trials have been running since early 2011, giving them ample time to study its behavior. In those trials PVS-RIPO was tested against the most aggressive form of brain cancer, recurrent glioblastoma, to give the researchers the best chances of figuring out how it works. And figure how it works they definitely did, there is a great detailed explanation of it in the source article. This quote from Prof. Nair, who was one of the heads of this research, sums it all up nicely "Not only is poliovirus killing tumor cells, it is also infecting the antigen-presenting cells, which allows them to function in such a way that they can now raise a T cell response that can recognize and infiltrate a tumor." >>Source
Fraternities for a Fortuitous Future
This one piqued my interest from the title alone. I'm also curious how many current, or former, fraternity members are on Hack Forums. This study looked at the differences in GPA as well as future salaries between college students who did and didn't join a fraternity, Unsurprisingly, those that chose to join one had a 0.25 lower GPA than their fellow students that didn't. What really caught my eye though was that fraternity members had a 36 percent higher future income on on average. The paper attributes the lower GPA to the usual fraternal extra curricular activities and the higher salaries to connections made. >>Source
Even the Brainless Need Their Sleep
The research into this began in a more dubious manner. According to Michael Abrams “When you start working on something totally crazy, it's good to get data before you tell anybody,” That idea being that brainless jellyfish still sleep. They decided to test for three key criteria typically associated with sleep, it isn't like they could just ask the Cassiopea. Firstly they tested for reversible quiescence which is when the jellyfish would become inactive but not entirely paralyzed. Secondly they looked at them having an increased arousal threshold, meaning it would be more difficult to get them to react to stimuli. Lastly, their quiescent state must be homeostatically regulated, meaning they would need to be in some sort of discomfort when not able to rest. They observed everything they were looking for, but what really confounded them was the reason why. Up until now it had been thought sleep was a function linked to the brain, considering if it wasn't necessary evolution would have done away with it long ago. Further research will be conducted to look into this. >>Source
iPhone X is 'Hurting' iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus
Apple Inc's dispatch of the iPhone 8 commenced with less display on Friday than new models in earlier years in the United States, Asia, Australia and Britain, as fans waited for the premium iPhone X, due out toward the beginning of November.
In China, a devoted Apple client said the enhanced camera was one reason she had purchased the new gadget.
"I waited until midnight to watch the launch event with my boyfriend to learn what's new with this iPhone. Its photograph function is pretty good. So I think I must change with no hesitation," said Ta Na, a 29-year-old consumer in Shanghai.
Notices of iPhone 8 and iPhone X on the famous Chinese online networking stage Weibo, a marker of purchaser intrigue, were not precisely observed for past dispatches. >>Source
Apple iOS 11 Tips, Tricks for iPhone, iPad: Six Ways to Improve Battery Life
iOS 11, the most recent rendition of Apple's versatile working framework, is out now for iPhone and iPad. Battery life has been a niggling issue on cell phones, and tablets and every io refresh carry with it a scope of objections about battery life. - Disable auto-brightness and adjust manually.
- Use Low Power Mode.

PUBG Competition?
Competition between games has been a thing all throughout gaming history. Whether people consider competition or not is truly up to the person, but every so often that competition becomes personal. For example, when games become popular, similar games are created too. The latest game to join the ranks in the highly popular battle royal game genre, Fortnite, is currently in a face-off with the world's most popular battle royal sandbox game at the moment, Playerunknown's Battlegrounds. The two games are very similar in a sense. Just like in both games, you start off in an aviation device and parachute your way down onto the map. In addition, there is a safe-zone that you must go to that will keep you safe, just like in PUBG. Ever played PUBG? Know how you can run around on that small little island before the match starts? Fortnite has that too. The graphics are tremendously different. Fortnite has a more cartoonish look to it, while PUBG has the more realistic graphics style. Another thing that is different is the price. PUBG is a paid game while Fortnite is free. However, PUBG has already broken a few Stream records. Do you think Fortnite will amount to what PUBG has done? There is no information on whether or not Bluehole will be pursuing legal actions against Epic games, but let us see how this "beef" pans out. >>Source
Rockstar Teases a Red Dead Redemption 2 Thing for Next Week
Popular western games have not really been created recently in the past few years. The most successful that ones remember, though, is the Rockstar game, Red Dead Redemption. It was already announced that a second version of the game was in the making. Rockstar had tweeted out a teaser with a date that said, "September 28 11 AM EST". What do you think that means? Well, sorry to say that is not the release date of the game. The game will not be coming out until sometime next year. However, maybe a new trailer will be released showcasing what the game has to offer. Do you think RDR2 will be released for PC? The first game was only available on consoles, but let us hope this time PC gamers have access to the game too! >>Source
