Genetically Engineered Cancer Cells Turn on Their own
It turns out that cancer cells are very efficient at rooting out and destroying their own. Using this information, researchers have decided to attempt modifying the cells to target and eradicate any present cancerous cells. They are attempted this by modifying them with CRISPR. CRISPR is a revolutionary new way to edit genetics of an organism. They inserted both resistance and sensitivity into parental cells. In a clinical setting, they have been extremely successful although they do admit this is a very long way off from being able to be tested on humans. They are hopeful that one day a doctor will be able to get a sample of a patient's cells, edit them to fight cancerous growths, and send the patient on their way. >>Source

PTSD Rates in Prison Employees
Prison workers face some of the harshest working conditions in the country. They experience PTSD in rates similar to war veterans, and for a good reason finds a study from a Washington State University College of Nursing. They face extremely violent conditions, as well as near-constant threats to both their friends and families. They also regularly witness the injury of their fellow workers. Much more extensive training is what was suggested by this study to help combat this growing issue in that industry. >>Source

The Effect of Sex on us
Relationships have been observed and studied to death in psychology. However, there are still many avenues regarding sex in relationships and its effect on our mood. A team at George Mason University took on the mission of filling in this gap. According to the paper they published, “In theoretical models of well-being, sex is rarely discussed and in many seminal articles, ignored.” The three-week-long study found that not only did it improve our mood directly afterward, we also tend to have a more positive outlook on life the day following the event. >>Source

Legal Cannabis in Washington Frees up Law Enforcement
Crime rates are on the rise in Washington, but that may not be as bad as you think. These rates are believed to be increasing because officers now have far more time to pursue other leads received by citizens. Tracking down petty distributors, which have mostly converted to licensed growers, is time-consuming work. In the source article, you can see an inverse correlation between the number of crimes solved before and after legalization in 2012. Researchers and law enforcement involved in this study hope departments nationwide take notice of these numbers. >>Source

Japanese nurse admits she killed over 20 elderly patients
On 10 July 2018, Japanese nurse Ayumi Kuboki has admitted to murdering at the minimum 20 elderly patients during her tenure at Oguchi Hospital in Yokohama, Japan. The then-nurse says she “planned their deaths to occur when she was off-shit – because she didn’t want to be bothered explaining their demise to relatives during working hours.” The occurrences date back to 2016 when suspicious activity occurred, leaving several patients dead. The first death is by an 88-year-old man, who, like some others, was declared dead due to natural causes, seeing the very ill state that they are in. The death was reported to hospital personnel after a nurse working at the hospital reported that there were bubbles located in the patient’s IV. After an autopsy was conducted, the conclusive answer was that the patient had been poisoned by an anti-septic system that nurses commonly use to clean hands and wounds. Just two days prior to that, the patient’s roommate had died of the same regimen used to poison Nobua Yamaki. While Kuboki was in custody, she allegedly admitted to killing ‘about 20 other patients’ so she would not have to break the news to their families. >>Source

Thai cave rescue: Jubilation! All 13 rescued from depths of Thai cave
After an ongoing rescue mission that has lasted well over a week, all 13 boys of the Thai Wild Boars football team are now free. Around 6 PM local time on 10 July 2018, the final boy had been freed from the depths of a cave the boys and coach were exploring after a match. The coach is said to have also been removed from the cave, following behind a doctor and Thai Navy SEALs. A total of four boys were rescued from that cave on 10 July, between 4 PM and 6 PM. The article has gained attention from around the globe. Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk chimed in with a possible resolution, by utilizing a chamber from one of SpaceX’s rockets, in hopes that it could somehow be used to assist with the cave exploration and extraction of the children. Although all of the boys have been removed from the cave, Elon has stated that he will continue the funding for training that involves his mechanism, that way a solution will be present immediately. All the boys and their coach will undergo a psychiatric examination and will be placed in a hospital for no less than seven days to ensure their health is up to par. >>Source

Merkel says Europe can't rely on U.S. to impose world order
On Friday, 20 July 2018, Chancellor Angela Merkel defends her statement from a year ago, where she said that Europe was no longer able to “rely on the United States to impose order on the world, and that it needed to take matters close to home into its own hands.” ‘We can’t rely on the superpower of the United States,’ Merkel said to a Berlin news agency. The Chancellor has said, despite challenges home and abroad, she will continue to work on Germany’s ‘under pressure’ relationship that they and the U.S. have at the moment. Though regardless of this, she further stated that “Washington could no longer be relied on to deliver world order.” The statement is in the wake of U.S. tariffs that President Trump has arched over the European country’s head, saying it’s a ‘real threat to the prosperity of many in the world.’ The relationship between the two countries has been described as ‘crucial,’ after President Donald Trump accused Berlin of being a slave of Russia’s because of energy reliance. A week prior to this, President Trump bashed Germany for supporting the Baltic Sea pipeline, which supports the import of additional Russian gas while Germany has yet to provide quick and steady payments for NATO spending – an event Trump described as ‘a horrific thing.’ Merkel said that she would continue working on the transatlantic relationship with President Trump, but at the moment it is ‘under strong pressure.’ >>Source >>Source

South Korean court sentences president Park to another eight years in jail
After initially being sentenced to 24 years in jail in April for ‘bribery, abuse of power and coercion,’ the former president has recently been sentenced to eight additional years in prison on 20 July 2018 ‘after finding her guilty on charged of causing loss of government funds and interfering in a 2016 parliamentary election.’ The sentences will be served consecutively, meaning no break will be given after one sentence has been completed. Last year, Park Geun-hye became the first democratically elected South Korean leader to be forcefully removed from office “when the Constitutional Court ordered her out over a scandal that exposed a web of corruption between political leaders and the country’s powerful conglomerates, or chaebol.” The 66-year-old former president continuously denied her wrongdoing and did not present herself in court, and still, at the time of writing, it is unclear if Park will appeal. “The Seoul Central District Court ruled that Park colluded with her former aides to cause the loss of government funds worth about 30 billion won ($26.5 million) from the National Intelligence Service (NIS)” – the same court ordered Park a fine of 33 billion won ($29.2 million). It is said that Park’s usage of the interfered funds deteriorated the ethical values of government spending, and “barred the country’s chief spy agency from using the funds for its core duty of protecting the country and the people.” >>Source
