Hackers in Pop Culture:

Hollywood vs. Reality

Hello and welcome back to the Hackforums website! If you haven’t heard of this amazing site before, you should register and become part of this great community. Today, I want to talk a little about hackers created by Hollywood.

We’ve all seen Mr Robot, The Matrix, Hackers, The Net, and other Hollywood creations that portray hackers. And the reality is that hackers have been showcased in pop culture and Hollywood for many decades. However, that doesn’t mean all hacker portrayals are accurate. A lot of the time, TV shows and movies take their liberties as they show hackers.

Usually, hackers on TV or in movies tend to have more glamor, a more interesting lifestyle, and they are characters worth following. Obviously, while that could be the case in some situations, usually, that’s very different from what you encounter in real life. Hackers certainly have their own issues to deal with, but a lot of the time, they live a sedentary, less interesting life. So it’s clear why Hollywood is taking liberties when they portray hackers, as they want to make these characters work and even stand out within the worlds they are creating.

Some stuff gets lost in translation
When you check any movie or TV show with hackers, they tend to exaggerate a lot of things. For example, they show very precise coding commands, a lot of keystrokes and stuff that wants to bring in a more fast-paced effect to hacking. Since TV or movies are a visual medium, they want to highlight the process of hacking by making it visually exciting.

A lot of the time, they also tend to show very elaborate graphics on the hacker’s screen. Obviously, that’s not going to be the case most of the time when it comes to real life. But they do a very good job at making things appear visually stimulating, as it draws interest from customers.

It can also be quite accurate at times
Mr Robot does showcase hacking from a more personal perspective. It highlights the life of a hacker, the potential dangers that they could be dealing with, along with a vast range of situations that could arise. Yes, the hacking part itself is exaggerated to some extent. But they still do an excellent job at showing the life of a hacker more than just the hacking part itself. We have to remember that Hollywood productions are meant for the average person. And while they do skip over many steps pertaining to hacking, at least in Mr Robot you will find certain things they are doing right.

We have to keep in mind that hacking is not going to be realistic in most movies or Hollywood productions. Obviously, it’s hard for them to make hacking feel exciting, but they do try to do so with a variety of methods, and sometimes it works quite nicely. But there will always be a variety of different things they get wrong.

Yet, in the end, what matters is how everything gets portrayed and the ideas they highlight. It’s certainly a great idea to introduce hacking elements in movies, but expect them to be more light-hearted and less realistic. Movies are not going to educate you about hacking and how to do it. Instead, they show the usefulness/dangers of hacking, and they use that as a means to move their plot forward. These productions can still generate quite a bit of interest and that’s why they are useful, but obviously, they are just a starting point!
