Investing in Numeric Domains

Investing in Numeric Domains.

If you have been investing in domains or have been following the field of domain name investing, you have probably come across numeric domains. These are domain names which contain only numbers. It is easy to understand why some of these types of domains like 360.com were sold for $17 million. However, domains like 88888.com were also sold at extremely high prices. In this blog, I will explain the separate culture of the domain name investing scene - Numeric Domain Investing.

Chinese Culture.

Before investing in NDs, we first have to learn a bit more about Chinese culture. Specifically, their number system and the meaning of numbers. Why? because most numeric domains are bought by Chinese individuals/businesses as the end-user.

The Chinese Number System.

The Chinese number system mainly has two main types of numbers. Lucky Numbers & Unlucky Numbers.

Lucky Numbers

The number : 8

This is considered to be the best number in the Chinese Number System. The main reason for this is the word for "eight" in Chinese sounds similar to words like "success", "wealth", "power" & "prosperity". Another main reason being the symbol (囍) which means Joy closely resembles the two digits 88. The Joy symbol is believed to be used by ancient Chinese emperors, heads of state and upper-class citizens as a status symbol.

This tradition is still being used today. Below are some examples:
  • In China, mobile phone numbers & license plates that start with or contain more than one "8" digit are more expensive compared to those with regular numbers.
  • The Olympic Torch of the 2008 Beijing Olympics was lit exactly on 8/8/2008 - 08 seconds and 08 minutes past 8.00 pm.

The number : 7

the number "7" is considered to be a lucky number. The number "7" is also considered to be lucky by most western countries and many countries in the world for that matter. The number "7" resonates "an unbreakable bond" and "trust".

The number : 6

Number "6" is considered to be neutral. It is not lucky or unlucky. The number is commonly used as "good luck charm" by many local businesses of all scales across china.

The numbers : 3, 2, 0

The numbers mentioned above are all considered to be lucky numbers in China.

Things to look out for.

Now that you have a basic understanding of Chinese culture and their unique number system, how do you pick a good numeric domain to invest in? Listed below are a few guidelines to follow if you are considering to invest in a particular numeric domain.

That being said, DO YOUR OWN RESEARCH. take about a month and learn the Chinese culture and their symbols, numbers etc. This area in domaining is very unique and not many people profit off of these types of domains. The ones who so are typically Asians who have a decent knowledge of the Chinese culture.

  • Less is more valuable - The lesser the number of digits in your domain, the more valuable it becomes. This is similar to regular domain investing where the value of a domain increases exponentially when there are lesser characters.
  • 8s & 0s - This is the best combination for an ND. The domain must always end in "0" to be valuable. The more 0s the better. example of a good domain to invest in is (888000.com/888800.com/88000.com/8000.com/800.com)
  • More 8s more value - The number of times the digit "8" appears in your domain, the more valuable your domain becomes. The placement of the digits does not matter. However, if the 8s are consecutive, the value increases. For example, 668888.com is more valuable than 86878388.com even though the latter has a higher number of "8" digits.
  • DO NOT BUY - The numbers 4 & 5 are considered as unlucky numbers in the Chinese number system. If a numeric domain has the numbers "4" or "5" in them, DO NOT buy that particular domain as it holds no value.
These are just some of the general guidelines that one should follow when considering to invest in a numeric domain. Like I mentioned previously, do your own research, it is impossible to write every guideline on a single blog. Further, keep a lookout on recent ND purchases, see what type of NDs are selling and what types aren't. Bottom line, DO NOT go into this area blind. Do your homework, gain experience and you will do just fine.
