Today, I want to talk to you about The Hidden Dangers of Public Wi-Fi.
With over 7.49 billion mobile users worldwide, it’s clear that having access to Wi-Fi is a huge priority. Whether we want to play games, connect with others, work, or share documents, Wi-Fi is a necessity. And while it’s easy to set up a Wi-Fi connection at home, getting internet access while on the road or within the city can be more difficult. That’s why public Wi-Fi connections have become so popular over the past decade. However, free internet access also comes with its fair share of risks, as you will notice below.
What are the dangers you expose yourself to when using public Wi-Fi networks?
![[Image: divider-gif.gif]](https://i.ibb.co/G2HzzXd/divider-gif.gif)
- Hackers will try to identify and steal confidential data from your device
- They will send maleficent links/documents filled with malware in an effort to infect your device
- You subject yourself to identity theft since the attacker can perform online victim profiling
- You can be the target of a ransomware attack
- Hackers can send various phishing attacks
- Sometimes, hackers will gain remote access to your device via the public Wi-Fi network.
- Hackers might try to access personal/business emails
- They could also steak your passwords
What methods do attackers use to exploit unsecured networks?

Hackers will identify the router type, and they will use the default router login to take the role of a network administrator. Once they can manage the network, it’s very easy for them to plant malware on all devices that are a part of the network.
Packet sniffing attacks
Some attackers will capture the various data units sent via the unsecured Wi-Fi network. After capturing data, they will use data unpackers to extract financial information and login credentials.
Password cracking attacks
If the router doesn’t have default login/passwords, attackers will use software that tries a large number of user/pass combinations in order to gain access to the interface. Then, they can start sending maleficent links to the network’s users and gain access to their devices.
Evil Twin attacks
Some hackers choose to set up hotspots themselves, which are meant to intercept all the user’s data. Upon accessing data, they can use ransomware or various extortion tactics to make users pay real money in order to make the threat go away.
Man in the Middle Attack
Attackers use these attacks to break into the network and “listen” to the data as it goes between the router and connected devices. These attacks are devious because they are hard to identify. However, the MitM attacks can make it easy for a hacker to identify your passwords, be it for various social media, bank accounts, and other personal content.
How can you protect yourself from public Wi-Fi issues?

- The best rule of thumb is not to use public Wi-Fi connections at all. That way, you’re not exposing any data that could be exploited by any hackers snooping in.
- If you choose to use public Wi-Fi, always make sure that you can tie it to a physical location and that you know its provider.
- Never share any SSN, credit card info, passwords, or personal information while being logged into a public Wi-Fi network.
- Quit/close apps that you don’t want to use when logged into a public network. Logging out of any accounts you don’t need to use online will help as well.
- Always update your software, especially security software. Ideally, you want to have some type of anti-malware solution installed on your phone. Those tools check for malware in real time and can help protect you from attackers.
- Change your passwords before and after using public Wi-Fi. That way, even if a hacker might access those passwords, they will be obsolete anyway.
- Turn off file sharing while using a public Wi-Fi connection.
- Using a VPN can be helpful since your data will be encrypted and, thus, much harder to access.

With that being said, It’s clear that using public Wi-Fi sounds great, but nothing is really “free” in this world. These networks aren’t very secure, and that allows hackers to access your personal files and information. It’s imperative to use the aforementioned methods and increase your safety when using any public network. Plus, remember never to share sensitive information online. Public Wi-Fi should be avoided as much as possible, and if you HAVE to use it, make sure you take the right privacy and security precautions!

Thank you!
