Posted Apr 24, 2025 08:03 AM
I want to share a DNS service that caught my attention for being as good as it is when it comes to security, privacy, and simplicity. Quad9 caught my attention, and it has worked wonders for me so far. If you still use your ISP's pre-configured DNS or Google DNS (8.8.8.8), then listen up.What is Quad9?
This is a free secure DNS service, which not only resolves your hostility DNS queries, but also protect you from accessing known malware domains. Think of it like having a phone book that not only guides you, but prevents you from being scammed online. 😅
Set Up is Ridiculously Simple
All you need to start using Quad9 is change your DNS settings to:
IPv4:
9.9.9.9
149.112.112.112
IPv6:
2620:fe::fe
2620:fe::9
That is all. No software, no registration, no gimmicks. Just plug and play.
They offer a “non-blocking” version if you simply wish to use plain DNS without filtering:
9.9.9.10 and 149.112.112.10 (IPv6 versions available too)
What Makes Quad9 Stand Out?
It blocks malicious domains: Quad9 accumulates threat data from ver 12 leading providers to keep you safe from malware, phishing and more.
DNSSEC by Default: Guarantees integrity of DNS response data.
Privacy-Oriented Perspective: Their IP addresses are not recorded and they don’t market data.
Provides end-to-end support for DNS over TLS, DoH, and DNSCrypt. Encryption of DNS data is possible.
Global infrastructure: More than 100 different locations around the world. Traffic will be automatically rerouted if any location fails.
Features You Should Know About
EDNS Client-Subnet Support: Provided on specific IPs (for instance, 9.9.9.11) for accessing CDN. Other Quad9 servers do not expose your IP address in EDNS headers which is a great gain for privacy.
No content filtering: Quad9 does not partake in censorship. Quad9 only blocks bad services – phishing, malware, botnet and so on. Adult or politically charged content will not be blocked.
Free for organizations purpose: usable by businesses at zero expense, no contracts needed.
How to Check Service Status
Check known bad test domain dnssec-failed.org or simulate blocked lookup. If Quad9 is active, then you will get NXDOMAIN response.
What About Data Logging?
No personal information is stored. IP address will not be logged.
DNS queries? Only basic, de-identified data is retrieved, and exclusively for the purposes of threat assessment (not marketing or advertising).
Logs are limited to isolated information such as geographic region (city level) to analyze the evolution of malware. That is the entirety of the log.
How Reliable Is It?
Service has been operational since 2016 and Quad 9’s infrastructure hosts a fifth of the world’s top-level domains and multiple root servers. Since they boast 99.999% uptime. Guaranteed Anycast routing ensures that resolvers are always connected to the closest live one.
