TMNT: Mutant Mayhem Review
Rating: 8.25 out of 10
Seeing this film in theaters was a great experience, though the true story depicted isn't canon, it still delivers a lot of excitement for the viewer. With a star-studded cast voicing iconic fan favorites from the TMNT universe, this movie should certainly be on the Watch List of any avid movie-goer or casual home viewer. Excellent alone, great with your friends and perfect for the whole family. It wasn't toned down and washed out to feel like they were trying to stray too far away from the origins of the TMNT that we have grown to know.
Plot:
You are immediately given the story of the origins of Master Splinter and the TMNT's showing that they were covered in radioactive goo as babies and in turn growing into humanoid turtles. At a young age, Master Splinter begins training them in various forms of martial arts in order to defend themselves from the humans, as Splinter is convinced that Humans are for the most part, evil.
We are introduced to April during the film, who's depiction strays far from the previous iterations we've known throughout the years, going from a red-headed (sometimes brunette) slender female version, to a mixed-race dark-haired pudgy version to appease a more politically correct society. We learn that SuperFly was an experiment of the scientist who inadvertently contaminated the turtles with the goo when it was accidentally disposed of through a sewage drain which inevitably covered the heroes in what would reform them into what we know them as today.
Years have passed, the turtles grew to teenagers and SuperFly has embraced his worst qualities and decided to be evil after the traumatic event which saw his creator being murdered. He assembled a rag-tag group of misfits that usually would be presented as pure villains, but we learn that most of the are just misunderstood and only in support of SuperFly because they felt that they had no one else in the world to cling to. After meeting the turtles, he informs them of his plans to destroy humanity, or at least most of it so that mutants would overtake the planet and the humans would be the 'freaks.'
The turtles values wouldn't allow them to stand by and allow this to happen, so they stood up to SuperFly and the battle ensued. After a lengthy battle and a couple of evolutionary forms shown by SuperFly, the turtles succeed in eliminating the foe and bringing peace to the city, while saving the world from a horrible fate in the process. April showed she is capable of more than her classmates assumed and was no longer the victim of bullies and instead created friends and fans throughout the school. The turtles and Splinter were no longer seen as monsters, but instead, heroes.
During the credits, we cut to a phone call being made. The final line; "Send me the Shredder"
The screen shifts and slowly pans out, to the legendary Shredder standing outside of the city staring inwards as it fades to black.
Needless to say, the sequel is going to be incredible.
