United States Spends the Most on Health Care
According to a study released by Johns Hopkins University, the United States spends far more on health care than other countries on a per capita basis. The study continued to conclude that this sharp increase is directly correlated to increased costs surrounding the industry. From being able to see a doctor to a bottle of pills, we certainly pay a premium in the United States. This is all in light of the country attempting to control healthcare-related spending over the last twenty-five years. The source article delves further into the exact markup Americans face at the doctor's office.  I would highly recommend giving it a read if this subject interests you. >>Source

Citizens Happier Where More is Spent on Infrastructure
This should come as a surprise to nobody. American citizens have been found to be happier in areas that prioritize repairing and developing infrastructure, according to a study from Baylor University. A larger focus on infrastructure has also been correlated to higher levels of education in the surrounding areas, as mentioned in the source article. The author of the paper, Patrick Flavin, Ph.D., remarked that this tends to be one of the least partisan ways to allocate an area's budget. >>Source

South Korea bans single-use plastic bags from large supermarkets
In a trending effort to help repair the environment, South Korea is the latest country to ban single-use plastic bags in all major supermarkets. All large-scale supermarkets will no longer be permitted to use plastic bags in an effort to “conserve natural resources and manage recyclable waste.” The ban will come into effect on Tuesday, 8 January 2019, and was introduced as an add-on to an existing law. Stores that still supply plastic bags were previously banned from providing customers with free plastic bags; however, after this most recent amendment update, the controversial grocery baggage will no longer be provided anywhere. This law comes with one exclusion to be permissible – wet produce such as fish and meat. Alternatives for the barred product consists of cloth and paper bags, where employees will be required to offer customers one of the two.

If a supermarket is caught not abiding by this law, they could face fines of up to 3 million won which is equivalent to $2,700. South Korea’s Ministry of Environment further stated that efforts to curb straw usage and other plastic items will be executed in the future. South Korea is now one of the dozens to have implemented bans or taxes on single-use plastic bags. Some countries that have strict laws pertaining to single-use plastic bags consist of, Australia, the United Kingdom, France, China, New Zealand, and the Netherlands. “Kenya has perhaps the harshest law: those who violate the ban face four years in prison or a fine up to $39,000.” In 2017, China banned imports of 24 varying types of solid waste, “including types of plastic and unsorted paper.” In October 2018, the European Parliament passed a bill to ban a range of “single-use plastics such as straws, cotton buds and cutlery, and to ensure most bottles are recycled to curb ocean pollution.” >>Source

First women to enter India temple in centuries now in hiding as protests rage
Two women entered a temple in the Indian state of Kerala and are now in hiding. This comes as a result of violent protests, leaving at least one person dead. The two women, aged 42 and 44, became the first women to ever access the shrine after Indian’s Supreme Court overturned a ban that disallowed women aged 10 to 50 from entering the temple in September on 2018, “ruling it to be discriminatory and arguing that women should be able to pray at the place of their choice.” The two women, Bindu Ammini and Kanakadurga, are currently in an unknown location hiding out with relatives. The spokesman went on to state that the two women previous attempted to enter the temple in December but were halted by mobs of angry protesters that blocked their path. The same bunch of protesters appeared again, forcing police to utilize tear gas and a water cannon to separate the protesters.

Police said one protester belonging to Indian’s Bharatiya Janata Party died Wednesday night after being struck by a thrown stone by counter protestors. The temple in question is known as the “Sabarimala shrine” which is believed to roughly be 800 years old and thought to be the home of a Hindu god of growth named Lord Ayyappa. The argument for the ban on women to enter the cave explain that women of menstrual age are “impure” and allowing women that fall into the age range would be disrespectful. Roughly 1,300 police officers were deployed amidst the protests to ensure safety to any woman interested in visiting the temple, however the 1,300 were initially not enough to protect these women from the hostility shown by protesters who shared opposing beliefs. “In the wake of Wednesday's visit, priests at the temple moved to "purify" the grounds, leading to the temporary closure of the site.” >>Source

Hasan Minhaj has recently publicized a statement after Netflix removed an episode of his comedy show from airing in Saudi Arabia. Once the move had gotten around on Twitter, the comedian went to Twitter to express his standing on the occurrence. Minhaj wrote, “Clearly, the best way to stop people from watching something is to ban it, make it trend online, and then leave it up on Youtube.” The show was removed from Netflix per request from Saudi Arabia. Saudi Arabia requested that Netflix remove an episode of Patriot Act with Hasan Minhaj because it “allegedly violated the country’s cybercrimes law. >>Source
