Synopsis
The story of No Game, No Life centers around Sora and Shiro, a brother and sister whose reputations as brilliant NEET (Not in Education, Employment, or Training) hikikomori (shut-in) gamers have spawned urban legends all over the Internet. These two gamers even consider the real world as just another "crappy game." One day, they are summoned by a boy named "God" to an alternate world. There, God has prohibited war and declared this to be a world where "everything is decided by games"—even national borders. Humanity has been driven back into one remaining city by the other races. Will Sora and Shiro, the good-for-nothing brother and sister, become the "Saviors of Humanity" on this alternate world? "Well, let's start playing."
Characters

Sora
Abandoned by his parents, Sora is a brilliant NEET (Not in Education, Employment, or Training) hikikomori (shut-in) gamer along with his stepsister, Shiro. He does not take life very seriously and is pretty much a good for nothing gamer. One day, he and his sister are called into an alternate world and they have to become Saviors of Humanity!

Shiro
Shiro is described as a genius in logic and problems, but has difficulty understanding emotions or behavior, relying on Sora to help her defeat human opponents such as Tet in their chess match. She also rarely shows much emotion at all on her face and, despite her genius intellect, speaks in short terse sentences. Shiro is extremely close to her brother, to the point of needing him by her side at all times to be comfortable. She is also shown to have a dry and somewhat twisted sense of humour, and displays signs of jealousy if Sora pays serious attention to other girls, showing she has a brother complex.

Stephanie "Steph" Dora
Stephanie is expressive and emotional, to the point where she cannot hide her emotions during a poker game. She loved her grandfather dearly and is angered when people call her grandfather a fool. She fell in love with Sora due to the pledges forcing her to, and she often has violent outbursts to try to break free of it. She loves her kingdom and the world and believes in the potential of Imanity.
Tails' Opinion
NGNL is does a great job of establishing the character base and personalities of the MCs in the first episode. As for the rest of the series, its really good. Plain and simple, the story is just plain good. The plot is really unique, the progression is fast enough to make you want to watch every episode but it is not rushed. That's one of the hardest things to do is have a good balance of pacing, while keeping on track and having good progression. NGNL has that.
I give the story a 10/10
Next, are the characters. The characters are the driving force behind the show. The characters having the personalities they have really keep it going. Unfortunately, there is one thing I didn't like. And that was that Sora and Shiro's actions are very repetitive. The OP'ness of them rival the MC from Kaze no Stigma or Kirito from SAO, or the MC from Log Horizon. Unfortunately, like I said, their actions and decisions are however, a bit repetitive.
I give the characters a 9/10.
Finally, the art. I have about one quip with the art here and there, I feel it could be better but it is fantastic. There are some times that I didnt feel it but its personal opinion. Overall, I love the way the animate the background and other things like the backs of cards and especially how the draw the eyes. It blows me away I love it so much. Those little things really steal me for it. But like I said, there are little times with little things I don't like.
So for the art, I give it a 9/10.
Overall, I think NGNL is an absolutely outstanding anime. I really like just about everything about the show from its characters, to the story. Plus the concept is absolutely fantastic.
Programmargorp's Opinion
Today’s review comes from a LN by Kamiya Yu (who also write Itsuka Tenma no Kuro Usagi, in which the anime adaption was terrible at best). With animation by Madhouse, which did the animation behind a few god tier shows such as Texhnolyze and some other high key shows such as Chobits, Btooom, Redline, Mahouka, etc. The star of this week’s review is No Game No Life, A.K.A Riding the Hype Train Spring 2014.
Following the exploits (god I love that word) of Blank (A.K.A Sora and Shiro) as they are sent to an alternative universe and continue on their conquest to conquer the world. I am to complete this section without spoiling anything, so I’ll just drop my personal opinion on it. The story of No Game No Life is nowhere near god tier; it suffered from too many pacing issues and contains zero depth beyond what you see. The pacing and depth I can look past for a show aimed at mainstream audiences, however what I cannot look past is the fact that there’s really nothing new about the story. That said, the story is better than average.
Story wise, I rate this a 6/10.
Just like the story, the characters no doubt also appears in modern works quite often. We have the OP Main character Sora, OP Main imouto Sora (who coincidentally is a brocon as well; who would have guessed?), useless character Stephanie, OP Magic character Jibril. All of these characters pretty much fit into standard arch types that appear in just about every other shounen/mainstream work. To be perfectly honest, I would go as far as to say that these characters received pretty much no development personality wise beyond the arch type they’re designed to fit into.
Character wise, I rate this a 3/10.
Now, with NGNL we pretty much have a typical series done by Studio Madhouse, from the same people that bought you High School of the Dead, Redline and Btooom!, animation wise this series is top notch. Couple that with the extremely colourful palette they chose to drop on top of the series (which IMO, fits quite well). Art wise quality is top notch, linework is decently done and I don’t see many corners being cut as obviously as Shingeki no Deus Ex in terms of reused cels and scenes.
Art wise, I rate this a 9/10.
Now, this week I decided to start adding a fourth category to my reviews, namely Enjoyment. In terms of No Game No Life, it works quite well in landing in the strike zone of its chosen target audience; more than once I found myself genuinely enjoying this show as I was watching it, despite its mediocre story and pretty much undeveloped characters.
In terms of enjoyment, I rate this a 9/10
Overall, No Game No Life is an example of a series which is extremely good to watch when you simply turn off your brain and watch it just for the sake of watching it. It fits in its chosen niche quite well and overall is enjoyable despite all the flaws with it.
Tails' Rating 9/10

Synopsis
Strange murders are happening in Tokyo. Due to liquid evidence at the scene, the police conclude the attacks are the results of 'eater' type ghouls. College buddies Kaneki and Hide come up with the idea that ghouls are imitating humans so that's why they haven't ever seen one. Little did they know that their theory may very well become reality.
My Opinion
With the anime adaptation of Tokyo Ghoul already underway, I thought it might be a mighty fine idea to do a highlight of the manga to bring it even more up to attention. Tokyo Ghoul has an interesting premise, solid and realistic characters, and amazing art. It does, however, suffer from some noticeable flaws, although fatal or insignificant all comes down to personal preference. It starts off slow, steadily working its way through emotional conflicts involving the psychology of "ghouls," humans who must eat other humans, highly reminiscent of the psychology dealt with in the anime Shiki for those of you who have seen it. Boring some of you may say, I thought it was brilliant. It soon picks up pace though, and the world of Ghouls is carefully revealed to you.
So what is there to complain about you ask? Simple. In latter chapters you may notice that the manga starts to be more action-oriented, and while this did throw me off personally I imagine not many of you will complain. It still retains a similar amount of psychological conflict and emotional realism, but it becomes harder to sympathize with some characters, making them less relatable to those who care about that aspect of the manga. It didn't affect me just as much as I've heard it's affected others and I'm still really enjoying this piece, but I feel it's slowly starting to go downhill. The art, on the other hand, I have a lot to talk about. The art of this manga is a prime example of why I don't like ratings, as for convenience purposes it can be pretty damn bad at parts. Those parts however, in my opinion, are some of the best of the manga and really help to make it truly unique. During scenes of immense tension, and I'm not expanding on that as you'll know what I'm talking about if you start reading it, the author takes a very sketchy, grotesque route to drawing which magnificently compliments the content of the scene. For convenience purposes this switch in artstyles pales, but for atmospheric purposes it's a masterpiece. This is one thing that will be lost in adaptation, and above all my opinion is that black and white fits this series way better than animated colors could ever do.
Still, if you like well-paced psychological thrillers in a dark contemporary fantasy setting with lots of gore and hints of realism, I highly recommend this piece. Anime or manga, whichever you prefer, don't let this one go over your head. It's well worth your time.
My Rating 7.5/10
